Indoor Air Quality – a social performance aspect
How and where is this taken into account
in the sustainability assessment of buildings ?

SUSTAINABILITY OF CONSTRUCTION WORKS — ASSESSMENT OF SOCIAL
PERFORMANCE OF BUILDINGS — METHODOLOGY
Sustainability assessment
• Prerequisite:
compliance to meet present and future needs on functional and
technical demands

• Based on 3 dimensions:

See next slide

• Based on the building LIFE CYCLE: 3 life cycle stages
– `Before use stage`, `Use stage` and `After use stage`

A prerequisite for sustainability are the 6 Basic Requirements for Construction Works
• Without meeting the functional needs there is no sustainability

7.4.3.1. Building fabric-related characteristics of indoor air quality
The building fabric-aspect of indoor air quality depends on a wide range of factors:
e.g. .............. The indoor air quality can also depend on the presence of other products (furniture,
fixtures and fittings, floor coverings etc.) that are not building-related.
For the assessment of indoor air quality the following indicators shall be assessed:
•

Substances and particles which are regulated and/or stated in the clients brief. Additional
substances and particles can be assessed where appropriate.

•

Concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) above the external ambient CO2 concentration [ppm]
according to EN 15251;

•

Ventilation rate in accordance to EN 15251 [e.g. l/s/person or l/s/m 3];

•

Risk of mould growth based on internal surface temperature and relative humidity according to
EN-ISO 13788;

7.4.3.2 User and control system-related aspects of indoor air quality
The level of controllability of the indoor air quality per room and of the building shall be
assessed according to the following measures:
•

Is there control of ventilation at a building level? [yes/no];

•

Is there control of ventilation by users with automatic control and/or with manual
override by users? [yes/no].

•

Is there measurement and display of CO2-level in individual rooms ? [yes/no];

•

Is there measurement and display of humidity in the building
and/or individual rooms ? [yes/no];

For each of the above indicators the selected basis of design shall be briefly stated
together with reference to supporting documents.
Thank you !

  • 39. 7.4.3.1. Building fabric-related characteristics of indoor air quality The building fabric-aspect of indoor air quality depends on a wide range of factors: e.g. .............. The indoor air quality can also depend on the presence of other products (furniture, fixtures and fittings, floor coverings etc.) that are not building-related. For the assessment of indoor air quality the following indicators shall be assessed: • Substances and particles which are regulated and/or stated in the clients brief. Additional substances and particles can be assessed where appropriate. • Concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) above the external ambient CO2 concentration [ppm] according to EN 15251; • Ventilation rate in accordance to EN 15251 [e.g. l/s/person or l/s/m 3]; • Risk of mould growth based on internal surface temperature and relative humidity according to EN-ISO 13788;
