It has been hailed by users, technology experts, computer media, technology websites and industry commentators as the biggest performance leap in 10 years! It’s the Intel ® Core™ 2 Duo processor and it delivers up to 40% – yes, 40%! – more power than Intel’s previous generation of microprocessors, and that means incredible system responsiveness and faster multimedia performance. Discussion on energy-efficiency But speed and performance is only half of the story. Thanks to Intel’s clever world-leading technologies, the Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor is also over 40% more power-efficient than before. Why is that important? ( discuss briefly ). Yes, it saves energy, but it also means less noisy systems. Because less heat is generated, cooling systems can be smaller and quieter. In turn, PC manufactures can design smaller, more versatile form factors. You can sum up the new Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor quite simply – up to 40% faster and over 40% more energy efficient . But let’s now take a closer look at the Intel technologies behind the remarkable new Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor … ( click next slide )
  • Speaker notes: Trainer – key messages for this slide: Outline key new technical features Intel Wide Dynamic Execution executes 4 instructions per clock cycle, compared to only 3 in Intel’s previous generation and other products out there today. What does this mean? It’s like going from a 3-lane highway to a 4-lane highway. It allows more information, or “traffic” to pass through, so the PC can do more in less time. Intel Smart Cache increases the efficiency of L2 cache to processor core data transfers by allowing the entire L2 cache to be allocated to one core, unlike the need for dedicated L2 cache for each core in other products. How does that work? Imagine you have a cupboard with two doors. Both doors are separated by a partition, so if you open one door you cannot look into the other half of the cupboard. You have several disadvantages: 1. You have to always open both doors to be able to see everything. Or you can open one door and then the other. 2. You cannot store bigger items that are larger than one half of the cupboard. For example, you have to store your winter coat in the cellar even if the other half of the cupboard is not yet filled completely - or even used at all.   That's completely different for Intel's Smart Cache Technology: 1. You can always see the complete content of the cupboard from any of the doors (from a die’s perspective). You can even access the other half of the cupboard directly without having to open an additional door. That saves time and you avoid doubling the storage in both halves. 2. If one processor does not need the cache the other processor gets all of it. You are able to store any size of items from either of the doors. You are able to best use the cupboard according to your needs. In this way the limited resource “cupboard” – or L2 cache – is used to its optimum. You don’t have to go to the cellar to fetch your winter coat. This is time saving and efficient. Intel Smart Memory Access maximizes main memory to the processor bandwidth and reduces latency by feeding data to the wide dynamic execution engine more efficiently. And all of these three features enable better performance in multiple application types and user environments, whether single- or multi-threaded. Intel Advanced Media Boost allows 128bit SSE/2/3 instructions to execute in a single clock cycle. Previous generations of Intel processors such as Intel ® Pentium ® D or Intel ® Pentium ® 4 take 2 cycles to achieve this, so in applications that use SSE instructions like video, speech, gaming and others, there’s a distinct performance improvement. Intel Intelligent Power Capability does just what it says, using power more efficiently – for example, switching it away from components when it’s not needed – to reduce overall power consumption and enable quieter, more power-efficient system designs. In summary, what you get is the power to do more at the same time, like playing your favorite music, running virus scan in the background, and all while you edit video or pictures. The powerful Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor provides you with the speed you need to perform any and all tasks imaginable. N.B. Trainer – if the question of lower GHz arises, answer as follows: The answer is higher efficiency. Imagine a hybrid car. It is able to switch off the engine while going downhill or while using the brakes. So it saves energy. In a similar way, the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor is able to switch off unused areas of the chip while not being used. The result in both cases: You save energy (less petrol or longer battery life time). This isn’t just a new processor, it’s a new kind of processor. With Intel ® Core™2 Duo, more gets done in less time in the processor. In fact, comparing GHz rates is now no longer the most accurate way to compare performance. Make sure RSPs understand: Comparing GHz rates between systems is not the most accurate way to compare performance any more The technologies which enable the performance gains are unique to the Intel ® Core™2 Duo processors. A moment ago I mentioned that manufactures can design and build smaller form factors, and nowhere is this more evident than in the entertainment PC… (click next slide)

Intel ® Viiv™ technology is at the heart of the entertainment PC, and a the heart of Viiv technology is? You’ve guessed it, the new Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor. As we’ll see, the Core 2 Duo processor is set to become a mainstream product and the standard by which all other processors are judged. But let’s first discover what it promises in home entertainment. All that extra power means effortless multitasking. Video and voice conferencing with Skype* with virus scan in background. Or burning DVDs or converting CD to MP3 while doing regular work. Or streaming content to other device while doing regular work. The possibilities are endless. Energy efficiency means smaller electricity bills, as well as well as stylish and quiet entertainment PC designs. Your customers benefit from an all-in-one system that can include personal video recorder, DVD/CD, music deck and stereo radio – and, it’s top wired LAN connectivity (up to 1GB Ethernet). What’s more, in addition to its value as an entertainment centre, an Intel Viiv technology-enabled PC can perform all the functions of a regular PC. That’s right, each separate device is connected by a digital media adapter – an easy to connect and relatively low-cost peripheral that creates a bridge between the PC and another device such as your TV set or stereo music system. Digital media adapters can be connected with cables, but the best option is to connect wirelessly – it’s quick and easy to install, with no untidy cables or drilling required.

The Celeron M processor is a good entry level product that competes effectively in the market. A better option is to sell up to Intel ® Centrino ® Duo mobile technology. The platform delivers a breakthrough in powerful multitasking capabilities, enhanced communications, and enables new functionalities like improved battery life for gaming, connected entertainment and mobile TV usage models. This compares the performance of a Pentium ® D Processor 960 (2X2 MB L2 Cache, 3.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with a Intel ® Core™2 Duo E6700 (4 MB L2 Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB). If you’re not familiar with it, SPECint*_rate_base2000 is a capacity-based metric used to measure throughput of a computer that is performing a number of tasks. This is achieved by running multiple copies of each benchmark simultaneously with the number of copies set to the number of logical hardware cores seen by the operating system (2 copies for Pentium ® D Processor and Core 2 Duo processor). As you can see the difference represents a major performance leap – both in power delivered and energy saved. Now I’m going to show you several other industry benchmarks, all of which underline the world-leading performance and energy efficiency of Intel ® Core™2 Duo on the desktop… (click next slide)
  • Speaker notes: Trainer – key messages for this slide: Benchmarks reinforce performance claims Here you can see the results from 5 industry standard benchmark tests, again comparing the performance of a Pentium ® D Processor 960 (2X2 MB L2 Cache, 3.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with a Intel ® Core™2 Duo E6700 (4 MB L2 Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) PCMark* 05 - CPU Test from FutureMark is an application-based benchmarking tool used to measure overall PC performance. By using portions of real applications, this benchmarking tool can assess PC performance. SPECfp*_rate_base2000 and SPECint*_rate_base2000 are capacity-based metrics used to measure throughput of a computer that is performing a number of tasks. This is achieved by running multiple copies of each benchmark simultaneously with the number of copies set to the number of logical hardware cores seen by the operating system (2 copies for Pentium ® D Processor and Core 2 Duo processor). 3DMark* 06 - CPU Test from FutureMark* is a benchmarking tool that combines the latest DirectX* 9.0 support with unique and updated tests and graphics. The CPU Test measures the contribution of the processor on 3D graphical performance. SPECint*_rate_base2000 We covered this in the previous slide. SYSmark* 2004 SE is BAPCo's latest version of the mainstream office productivity and Internet content creation benchmark tool used to characterize the performance of the business client. SYSmark 2004 SE features user-driven workloads and usage models developed by application experts. SYSmark is a great tool for measuring how a PC performs on common business computing applications. SPEC CPU2000 measures performance on more compute-intensive applications that although they don’t constitute the majority of day-to-day office computing are still very important. Things like running email, IM, and presentation software while hosting a multi-party VOIP conference call are becoming more common and SPEC CPU2000 provides a measure of PC headroom that can enable smooth operation while really putting a load on the PC. Conclusive proof that the Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor provides outstanding performance over the previous generation. But what about Intel ® Core™2 Duo in mobile? ( click next slide )

This time I’ll show you some real-world computing comparisons that illustrate how the Intel ® Core™2 Duo processor delivers extra performance to laptop computing. This graph compares Intel ® Core™2 Duo Processor (2MB L2 Cache,1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB) with Intel ® Pentium ® M Processor 730 (2 MB L2 Cache, 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) using some typical applications. MP3 encoding, for example is just over twice as fast, while working with Windows Moviemaker – as you know, a demanding, processor-hungry application – is even faster. Discussion: interfaces Here’s a question for you: Can you explain the difference between a 2-foot and a 10-foot user interface? (discuss briefly).
