As Facebook continues to grow (there are roughly 1 billion users using the
service to date), it is becoming a key area for businesses to stay connected to
their existing customer base. It is also a valuable tool to attract new customers
and prospects.
In fact, because Facebook has such a large user base, it is almost expected
that your customers and fans of your brand will check out your Facebook
presence first.
While setting up a Facebook Page takes just a few minutes, there is more to do
than just that.
To help you optimize your business on Facebook, we’ve compiled 12 Do’s and
Don’ts for Businesses on Facebook.

1. DO: Create a Facebook Page for your business
The biggest mistake I see businesses make when they join
Facebook is to create a Facebook Profile but not a
Facebook Page.
Not only is it against Facebook’s Guidelines to use a
Facebook Profile for your business, but they can shutdown
your accounts if you’re using a profile instead of a page
without warning.
If you’re concerned about Facebook Page features, I’ve
highlighted some of the benefits below:
•Unlimited connections vs. 5,000 for profiles
•Run Ads (Facebook Offers, Promoted Posts,
Sponsored Stories)
•Add apps (like shopping carts and newsletters)
•Add the recommendations box to collect feedback
about your business
•Receive messages from fans and customers

What to do:
•Create a Facebook Page
•Choose a category
•Give your page a name
•Watch: Connect Facebook Page to your Profile
2. DO: Check your Facebook Insights
Now that your business has a Facebook presence, you’ll
want to make sure you monitor your Facebook Page.
It is important to note that you don’t have to monitor
your Facebook Page everyday. My personal
recommendation is to review your page each week - to
see what is and isn’t working.
This way you don’t continue to waste time posting content
that your fans are not interested in. In addition, by keeping
tabs on your Facebook Page, you won’t let your fans
down.
There is nothing more disappointing than visiting a
Facebook Page that has been neglected. This includes not
posting enough content or not posting relevant content.
Remember, when looking at your Facebook Insights, pay
attention to what worked and what didn’t work. Items that
didn’t work will show little to no engagement. Make notes
and adjust moving forward.

•Read the Facebook Insights Glossary
•Download your Facebook Insights
•Analyze your results
•Page level - stats about your page
•Post level - stats about individual posts
•Adjust your posts for the next month
•Create a calendar reminder
3. DO: Tag fans and pages
One of the best mechanisms to reward fans and
customers and help your business in the process is to tag
fans and other Facebook Pages in your posts, photos, or
videos.
The great thing about this is that they are notified and in
most cases, they’ll add a comment on your page or share
the content they were tagged in with their own network.
In either case, your business wins!
Why does this matter? It is difficult to keep up with
everything going on on Facebook due to the volume of
content that is posted. Tagging fans and pages helps keep
them in the loop on something they may have missed. It
also improves engagement and shows that you’re not just
about sharing your own content, but are eager to help.

What to do:
•Watch: 3 ways to tag on a Facebook Page
•When posting, think about any pages you should
tag to help get the word out
•Tag fans and customers
4. DO: Optimize your images
If you’re looking to boost engagement
with your fans and customers, be sure you
put your best foot forward - this includes
posting images that are consistent with
your brand and are sized properly for
your Facebook Page.
Not only does it take just a few minutes to do, but when
you’re selective about what you’re posting and how you’re
posting it, it can make the difference between a like and
an unlike.
Image optimization: When you’re getting ready to share
an image on your Facebook Page, decide what you’re
posting and how you want to present it to fans. You have
three ways to do this. One, as a normal photo. Two, as a
highlighted photo. Three, pinned to the top of your
Timeline.

5. DO: Collect feedback from fans and customers
How many of you have seen the comment cards in
restaurants? Did you know, your Facebook Page can
collect comment cards too - it’s called the
recommendations box.
Not only can you add your own recommendations box to
your Facebook Page, but recommendations you receive
are tucked right at the top of your Facebook Page so that
they’re all in one place.

brand and is easy for others to remember

7. DO: Add landing pages and apps
As I mentioned at the beginning, you can add different
functionality to your Facebook Page to help customize it.
For example, you can add a shopping cart, email
newsletter form, display YouTube channel videos, show off
your Pinterest pinboards and more on your Facebook
Page.
To create landing pages for running contests, showing off
your Pinterest channel, etc, here are some third-party
tools I recommend:

What to do:
•Decide what functionality your Facebook Page is
missing
•Look through the list of third-party apps
•Add an app - most don’t require that you be a
programmer.
•Promote, promote, promote your landing pages!
8. DO: Create a posting strategy
Not sure what to post to your Facebook Page versus your
Twitter account or Pinterest account, well then it’s time to
create a posting strategy.
A posting strategy involves setting goals that your
business wants to achieve and then deciding which social
network fits best for achieving those goals.
Things to consider when creating a posting strategy:
•What events do you have coming up?
•Do you have any monthly goals you want to achieve?
•Are there any social networks you want to target?
Remember, by having a posting strategy in place, you
won’t have to scramble to come up with content. You’ll
know exactly where different types of content should get
posted.
All in all, this will save you lots of time and you won’t have
to make using social media an afterthought for your
business.

9. DON’T: Count “LIKES”
A lot of business owners think that in order to build a
successful Facebook Page, they need to have thousands
of fans. That’s not true.
There are a number of VERY SUCCESSFUL Facebook
Pages that have a small number of fans (likes). What is it
that helps them make sales through social media?
Engagement.
So how do you engage with fans? It starts with your story.
How did you get started, what did your original products
look like, what do they look like now?
By sharing your story, you’ll bring fans closer to your
brand.
In turn, they’ll like, share, and comment on your content.
As a business, make a deeper connection by commenting
on a photo they posted and add a like if you truly like their
content! It will go a long way with fans and customers.

10. DON’T: Create multiple Facebook Pages
It’s very easy to create a new Facebook Page. Before you
decide to do this, ask yourself the following questions:
•Why do I need another page?
•Do I have the resources to maintain another Facebook
Page?
•Do I have enough content to keep additional Facebook
Pages going?
Just because your business offers multiple brands and
products, does not mean you need a separate page.
Remember, you can target specific Facebook Fans using
different types of Facebook Ads.
Also, if you cannot keep up, creating multiple Facebook
Pages can hurt your brand overall because you run the risk
that your pages will look like they are neglected.

11. DON’T: Put all your eggs in one marketing basket
Facebook is a great marketing tool. Remember though, it
it not the only one.
Be sure that in addition to Facebook, you’re using other
social networks along with your website to get a variety of
audiences interested in your business to achieve your
goals.
Tip: Know your audience and the best way to
communicate with them.
Some customers prefer to use email, others use Facebook,
and there are also individuals who connect on YouTube to
learn how to use your products.
Be sure you ask your customers what the best way to
communicate with them is.
You can do this by creating an online survey or post a
status update on your Facebook Page.
After the survey, take the feedback you receive and
incorporate it into your marketing strategy.

12. DON’T: Automate everything
Successful Facebook Pages are authentic and transparent.
When you automate your entire Facebook Page, you
remove the personality from your business.
It may have the tendency to convey that you’re not
interested in interacting and engaging with your fans or
customers and that you only want them to read your
content and buy your products.
Tip: Short on time?
Remember, you control the pace at which content flows
on your Facebook Page.
If you’re busy, schedule out posts when you’re not
available, but make time (30 minutes) to go back and
respond to comments and engage with fans.
On day’s that you’re available, don’t schedule out your
posts. Instead, post them yourself and spend some time
interacting with fans.
Not only does this make you more authentic, but it keeps
you aware of the tools and any new changes to the site.
Your business will look better and your fans will thank you
too!

12 Do's & Don'ts of Facebook Marketing for Business

  • 2. As Facebook continues to grow (there are roughly 1 billion users using the service to date), it is becoming a key area for businesses to stay connected to their existing customer base. It is also a valuable tool to attract new customers and prospects. In fact, because Facebook has such a large user base, it is almost expected that your customers and fans of your brand will check out your Facebook presence first. While setting up a Facebook Page takes just a few minutes, there is more to do than just that. To help you optimize your business on Facebook, we’ve compiled 12 Do’s and Don’ts for Businesses on Facebook. Enjoy!   • 3. 1. DO: Create a Facebook Page for your business The biggest mistake I see businesses make when they join Facebook is to create a Facebook Profile but not a Facebook Page. Not only is it against Facebook’s Guidelines to use a Facebook Profile for your business, but they can shutdown your accounts if you’re using a profile instead of a page without warning. If you’re concerned about Facebook Page features, I’ve highlighted some of the benefits below: •Unlimited connections vs. 5,000 for profiles •Run Ads (Facebook Offers, Promoted Posts, Sponsored Stories) •Add apps (like shopping carts and newsletters) •Add the recommendations box to collect feedback about your business •Receive messages from fans and customers 12 Do’s and Don’ts for Businesses on Facebook ©  2013  Christian  Karasiewicz  |  www.christiankonline.com  |  www.facebook.com/askck   3 What to do: •Create a Facebook Page •Choose a category •Give your page a name •Watch: Connect Facebook Page to your Profile
  • 4. 2. DO: Check your Facebook Insights Now that your business has a Facebook presence, you’ll want to make sure you monitor your Facebook Page. It is important to note that you don’t have to monitor your Facebook Page everyday. My personal recommendation is to review your page each week - to see what is and isn’t working. This way you don’t continue to waste time posting content that your fans are not interested in. In addition, by keeping tabs on your Facebook Page, you won’t let your fans down. There is nothing more disappointing than visiting a Facebook Page that has been neglected. This includes not posting enough content or not posting relevant content. Remember, when looking at your Facebook Insights, pay attention to what worked and what didn’t work. Items that didn’t work will show little to no engagement. DO: Tag fans and pages One of the best mechanisms to reward fans and customers and help your business in the process is to tag fans and other Facebook Pages in your posts, photos, or videos. The great thing about this is that they are notified and in most cases, they’ll add a comment on your page or share the content they were tagged in with their own network. In either case, your business wins! Why does this matter? It is difficult to keep up with everything going on on Facebook due to the volume of content that is posted. Tagging fans and pages helps keep them in the loop on something they may have missed. DO: Optimize your images If you’re looking to boost engagement with your fans and customers, be sure you put your best foot forward - this includes posting images that are consistent with your brand and are sized properly for your Facebook Page. Not only does it take just a few minutes to do, but when you’re selective about what you’re posting and how you’re posting it, it can make the difference between a like and an unlike. Image optimization: When you’re getting ready to share an image on your Facebook Page, decide what you’re posting and how you want to present it to fans. You have three ways to do this. One, as a normal photo. Two, as a highlighted photo.   • 7. 5. DO: Collect feedback from fans and customers How many of you have seen the comment cards in restaurants? Did you know, your Facebook Page can collect comment cards too - it’s called the recommendations box. Not only can you add your own recommendations box to your Facebook Page, but recommendations you receive are tucked right at the top of your Facebook Page so that they’re all in one place.   • 9. 7. DO: Add landing pages and apps As I mentioned at the beginning, you can add different functionality to your Facebook Page to help customize it. For example, you can add a shopping cart, email newsletter form, display YouTube channel videos, show off your Pinterest pinboards and more on your Facebook Page.   • 10. 8. DO: Create a posting strategy Not sure what to post to your Facebook Page versus your Twitter account or Pinterest account, well then it’s time to create a posting strategy. A posting strategy involves setting goals that your business wants to achieve and then deciding which social network fits best for achieving those goals. Things to consider when creating a posting strategy: •What events do you have coming up? •Do you have any monthly goals you want to achieve? •Are there any social networks you want to target? Remember, by having a posting strategy in place, you won’t have to scramble to come up with content. You’ll know exactly where different types of content should get posted.   • 11. 9. DON’T: Count “LIKES” A lot of business owners think that in order to build a successful Facebook Page, they need to have thousands of fans. That’s not true. There are a number of VERY SUCCESSFUL Facebook Pages that have a small number of fans (likes). What is it that helps them make sales through social media? Engagement. So how do you engage with fans? It starts with your story. How did you get started, what did your original products look like, what do they look like now? By sharing your story, you’ll bring fans closer to your brand. In turn, they’ll like, share, and comment on your content. As a business, make a deeper connection by commenting on a photo they posted and add a like if you truly like their content!   • 12. 10. DON’T: Create multiple Facebook Pages It’s very easy to create a new Facebook Page. Before you decide to do this, ask yourself the following questions: •Why do I need another page? •Do I have the resources to maintain another Facebook Page? •Do I have enough content to keep additional Facebook Pages going? Just because your business offers multiple brands and products, does not mean you need a separate page. Remember, you can target specific Facebook Fans using different types of Facebook Ads.   • 13. 11. DON’T: Put all your eggs in one marketing basket Facebook is a great marketing tool. Remember though, it it not the only one. Be sure that in addition to Facebook, you’re using other social networks along with your website to get a variety of audiences interested in your business to achieve your goals. Tip: Know your audience and the best way to communicate with them. Some customers prefer to use email, others use Facebook, and there are also individuals who connect on YouTube to learn how to use your products. Be sure you ask your customers what the best way to communicate with them is. You can do this by creating an online survey or post a status update on your Facebook Page.   • 14. 12. DON’T: Automate everything Successful Facebook Pages are authentic and transparent. When you automate your entire Facebook Page, you remove the personality from your business. It may have the tendency to convey that you’re not interested in interacting and engaging with your fans or customers and that you only want them to read your content and buy your products. Tip: Short on time? Remember, you control the pace at which content flows on your Facebook Page. If you’re busy, schedule out posts when you’re not available, but make time (30 minutes) to go back and respond to comments and engage with fans. On day’s that you’re available, don’t schedule out your posts. Instead, post them yourself and spend some time interacting with fans. Not only does this make you more authentic, but it keeps you aware of the tools and any new changes to the site.
