2. Segregation between black and
white.
• Montgomery is the state capital of Alabama.
• It was one of the most racially segregated cities in the USA
during the 1950s.
• In Montgomery, it was the law that black people travelling on
the buses could not sit at the front, even if the seats were not
occupied. If all the seats at the front were occupied for the
white people sitting on the bus, a black person would have to
get up off their seats at the back and give it up to a white
person. Black people had to pay their fares at the top of the
bus and enter at the back. If a black person did not obey they
were fined and jailed.
