  1. “Today I’m here to illustrate the importance of technology integration in education today. First we need to take a moment to think about all the ways we ourselves use technology today. Many of you use your cell phones, used the Internet to order groceries or for correspondence, sent a text to a family member, etc. Technology surrounds us and our students. We are living in a digital age where there is new technology popping up all the time. We have to prepare our students to be technological thinkers. It’s their present and future. Globally, there are nations striving, pushing and giving opportunities to their students so they can engulf themselves with technology. We have to prepare our students to strive and push their way in this world of ever growing technology so they can survive among students internationally. I present to you a few ideas of how we can best utilize and create a technology plan that will be truly vital to our students.”
  2. Here are a list of today’s talking points. We will be revisiting this page as we go over each point. Let’s get started with commitment to technology.
  3. There needs to be a commitment to technology in the classroom. There has to be a sense of “buy in” from teachers, administration, parents, and other stakeholders such as the school board and community members. Together we have to work as a team towards a common goal to provide the students with the best opportunities so they won’t fall behind in the digital age globally. Each member is responsible for the success of technology integration in the classroom.
  4. Teachers, administration, and stakeholders need to be on the same page in regards to technology integration.Jostens Learning Corporation did a survey in 1997 of teachers and superintendents. Teachers wanted funding to go to providing more computers in the classroom. Superintendents wanted funding to be used for professional development.Professional development and computers, software and hardware need to be added together. If you have more PD and not enough technology equipment, then the teachers will forget what they learned before they have the opportunity to use what they learned. If they get the computers and no PD, they will be under utilizing the technology. We need to have a balance.
  5. Our students need technology integration to succeed in school, use higher level thinking skills and in the future endeavors.
  6. In an eight year longitudinal study of the SAT-I performance at New Hampshire’s Brewster Academy, students who participated in a technology-integrated school reform effort scored average increases of 94 points over students who participated in a traditional school experience.   7. A West Virginia study shows an increase in test scores among those who are integrating technology into the curriculum of basic math and reading.Students across nine states that used Jasper video software for improving math for three to four weeks were able to complete difficult problem solving tasks better than those that hadn’t completed the program.These aren’t the only advantages in integrating technology.Technology applications are needed to aid students in the work force. Research shows that when students know how to use word processors, spreadsheets, computer-aided drawing and have an increased knowledge of computer application they are more marketable in the workforce. Students are able to better problem solve, analyze and collect data and understand how systems work when technology has been intertwined with their education.
  8. . Teacher development is imperative to a successful technology integration reform.The role of teachers is absolute in guiding the development of students’ higher level thinking skills.Many believe technology has the abilities to make education great, but we need to remember it is merely a tool. “It is not the silver bullet that will solve all of our education problems, but it is certainly a useful tool that enables us to link various learning communities together in new and different ways.” It’s not what technology can do by itself, but what teacher and learners can accomplish with its help.Teachers need to implement technology into the state standards. The technology is used to facilitate learners and teachers in the curriculum. In order for this to happen, teachers need technology to be second nature to them, so they are using technology as a tool.Teacher technology development needs to be of a good quality, not quantity.In all the reading I did to prepare for this presentation, each article highlighted that an important component of technology integration is technical support and professional development for the staff.Teacher professional development is a necessity. Teachers need technology to be an innate form of there pedagogy.
  9. Having enough technology to around. In Mississippi there were significant gains that showed students with an environment of a one to one, student to computer ratio saw more effective results.Teachers not only need to be adequately taught, they need to have the tools to use incorporate technology education.
  10. Today I’ve provided some of the reasons why technology needs to be integrated into education. I’ve talked about having commitment to technology, and I’ve expressed that everyone needs to work together in our commitment. I provided research based information stating the potential success of integrating technology into the curriculum. We’ve looked at how the need for teacher development piggy backs the integrating technology and that the access to enough technology are all vital components to integrating technology. I hope after hearing my short presentation today, I’ve persuaded you to believe that technology integration is vital to our student’s success.
