3. • Gaylord was welcomed to the world on June 4, 1916.
• His childhood home was in Clear Lake, Wisconsin.
• When Gaylord was a young boy he loved being
outdoors.
• His best friend growing up was Sherman Benson.
4. School
Gaylord went to Clear Lake Elementary when he
was young.
Gaylord also went to Clear Lake High School.
When Gaylord was in High School he was the
captain of his football and basketball team.
He also played trumpet in the high school band.
5. School
Gaylord gave a graduation speech when he
graduated in 1934 from Clear Lake High School.
He had a rough start in collage in 1935. He tried
2 small colleges in Wisconsin and realized that he
did not have the skills to be a good college
student.
In 1937 he tried school again and traveled 2,000
miles to San Jose State College in California.
6. Adult
As a adult Gaylord was into politics.
Gaylord went to Law School at University of Wisconsin
and graduated from there in 1942.
He later went to Officer Candidate School and graduated
with a rank of second lieutenant. Gaylord was later sent off
to a training base called Indiantown Gap Military
Reservation in Pennsylvania.
Back then black troops were separated from white troops .
But, Gaylord didn’t care and the black soldiers became his
friends.
After he was finished he came back and started to get interested
in the environment even more. After a while he came up with the
idea of Earth Day. On the first Earth Day more then 2 million
people joined in to help.
7. Adult
Gaylord married
Carrie Lee and
had three kids.
There names
were Gaylord
(boy) , Tia (girl),
and last but not
least Jeffrey (boy).
He was also a
U.S. Senator and
a governor during
his life time.
8. Death
Gaylord Nelson died on July 3, 2005.
He was a very successful man and was a very
important man to the environment.

Gaylord had 3 terms as a U.S. Senate.
He was a counselor for the Wilderness Society.
He ran for Congress but was defeated.
Gaylord lived in a mansion when he was a
governor.
He was interested in protecting the environment
very much throughout his life.
