Integrating a digital library into the school e-learning environment
1. Integrating a digital library into the school e-learning environment West Island School Dr. Dana Dukic A librarian stuck in Moodle
2. Overview Digital library – characteristics and contents A model of a Distributed Digital Library Distributed Digital Library and Moodle How to embed digital resources in Moodle based courses
3. Digital libraries in rescue With the growth of the Internet, e-learners are exposed to an overwhelming range of information available at the click of mouse Digital libraries provide e-learners with directions in accessing and using electronic resources and rescue them from information overload Digital libraries also help teachers to find quickly suitable resources for teaching
4. Characteristics of digital libraries rich in contents no physical boundary round the clock availability multiple access to resources saving space provides information retrieval immediate availability of new resource can be easily embedded in school e-learning environment
5. Digital library resources and services Digital library links e-learners to Subscription resources library catalogues licensed journal databases electronic book collections multimedia collections interactive teaching resources Free resources from the Internet Gateways Directories Multimedia channels selected Internet websites (using social bookmarking) Library instruction materials in multimedia formats: library tours, interactive tutorials with quizzes and worksheets Forums for communication and interaction with others Moodle forums
6. West Island School Digital Library Subscription databases Encyclopedias: Britannica Access Science Periodicals: UK/EIRE Ref. Center (Ebsco) Student Resource Center (Gale) NewsBank Literature reviews:Novelist (Ebsco) eBooks:Questia Schools Interactive teaching resources: brainPOP eChalk Multimedia databases: Point of View (Ebsco) Global Issues in Context (Gale) Discovery Education Streaming Free Internet resources Audio books E-books Subject directories and information gateways A selection of quality websites Video and audio channels News channels
38. What is a 'distributed digital library’ Distributed Digital Library is a 'virtual' library whose content is the aggregation of many independent web pages, rather than a collection of resources kept in a central school library website. Individual library pages accumulate various digital resources for the specific subject areas in school curriculum Library pages can be also focused on different age groups of students, for example, pages with resources suitable for Lower school, Middle school and Upper school
39. What are the benefits of DDL for teaching and learning connects effectively to school curriculum secure to students and teachers an easy access to suitable resources meets learning needs of students of different age and learning abilities
40. How DDL builds on Moodle features Moodle is an e-learning platform that is primarily designed to deliver contents in instructional formats Main characteristics of Moodle: Chunks of dynamic contents Built-in instructional activities High flexibility Easy-to-manage interface Moodle based library pages are designed more in instructional format It helps teachers to imbed library digital resources in teaching Teachers can simply link suitable resources to their Moodle courses
41. Why is Moodle a convenient tool for librarians easy to embed and manage digital collections by using Moodle components rich with instructional tools brings library close to teachers simple authentication for digital library users brings in a new quality in communication with users easy way to pass new information to users (news forums connected to course members’ email) knowing better the students (students need to enroll to access Moodle library courses, students profiles with photos)
42. WIS Library on Moodle WIS Library Moodle space is organized by disciplinary areas and by students’ age groups. Course: Library Course linked pages: Disciplines English Science Design & Techn. Modern languages Humanities etc. Age groups KS3 KS4 IB Diploma
43. How librarians use Moodle components Course Pages Developing subject area gateways Topics Access to various library collections Blocks Link to school library OPAC RSS feeds for research topics or selected journals Embedding teaching tools and tutorials Forums Introducing new resources Discussing various library issues
57. How to embed library e-resources in Moodle courses Undoubtedly, teachers are keen on using digital resources provided by school libraries, but there is still a lack of awareness of how best to integrate these resources into the e-learning environment Here are some ideas how to develop lessons in Moodle by using e-resources from West Island School digital library: Two English courses: Macbeth (year 8) To Kill a Mockingbird (year 9) Science course: Solar System (Year 7)
64. Rethinking of library instruction methods and tools The move to Moodle is also an opportunity for librarians to rethink the way in which online training on the use of various e-resources is organized and presented Library lessons should, as well as library Moodle pages, be adjusted to the requirements of different disciplinary areas Library instruction pages are also becoming more lively because librarians are utilizing many dynamic components offered in Moodle to embed suitable interactive and multimedia teaching materials.
67. Further development The project of creating a distributed digital library supported by instruction pages is still in its infancy and it is not yet available in a complete and usable form. The further development of DDL should go in several directions: Creating pages with subscription e-resources for major disciplinary areas Adding up suitable quality resources from the Internet Providing interactive tutorials for key resources Supplying instructional materials for basic information literacy skills Raising awareness of library digital resources with teaching staff and students
