Objective
The overall objective of the SilverSneakers Functional
Fitness Assessment initiative is to provide a safe and
effective variety of functional fitness tests specifically
designed for our SilverSneakers members. These tests
provide information and feedback to participants on activ-
ities for daily living (ADL) functions through recognized
health and skill-related fitness components: body compo-
sition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and
endurance, flexibility, speed, power, agility, balance and
coordination.
Goals
The overall goal of the initiative is to offer members the
opportunity to measure their physical skills and abilities
relative to other older adults, measure improvement while
participating in the SilverSneakers Fitness Program and
offer a fun and motivating activity to increase retention
and participation in a group exercise setting. The
SilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment provides
an overall “snapshot” of a participant’s functional fitness
as compared to data compiled by the LifeSpan project
developed by Dr. Roberta Rikli and Dr. Jessie Jones of
California State University, Fullerton. The 6-Minute Walk,
Scratch Test, Biceps Arm Curl, Chair Stand, Body Mass
Index, Functional Reach and 8-Foot Up and Go protocols
have been redesigned to offer safe, reliable and valid fit-
ness test measurements in a comfortable, non-intimidat-
ing group setting. The initial assessment will serve as the
benchmark for improvements. Subsequent assessments
within eight to 12 weeks offer members comparative infor-
mation. Test measurements, normative data and fitness
information will be available for all members.
Criteria
All assessment participants must follow SilverSneakers
Fitness Program guidelines for physician clearance spe-
cific to the assessment and sign a physical activity waiv-
er form prior to testing. The Functional Fitness
Assessment can be administered once or many times
throughout the year. Time between the tests offers mem-
bers the opportunity to make an impact on physiological
changes for health, and skill-related fitness components.
FUNCTIONAL
FITNESS ASSESSMENT
The following tests are recommended for partici-
pants in the SilverSneakers Functional Fitness
Assessment. Instructions for administering each
test follow.
6-MINUTE WALK - Cardiovascular endurance
Walk (not run or jog) along a safe, predetermined
course and cover as much distance as possible in
six minutes.
SCRATCH TEST - Flexibility
Assess the range of movement in the shoulder joint
by reaching one hand over a shoulder and the
other hand behind the back, attempting to “touch”
the middle fingers on both hands.
BICEPS ARM CURL
Upper-body muscular strength and endurance
Perform as many biceps arm curls in 30 seconds
as possible.
CHAIR STAND
Lower-body muscular strength and endurance
Stand from a seated position and return to a seat-
ed position as many times as possible in 30 sec-
onds.
FUNCTIONAL REACH - Dynamic balance
Reach as far forward as possible without taking a
forward step.
BODY MASS INDEX - Waist-to-hip ratio
Measure the relationship between weight and
height relative to standards developed for overall
ideal body weight.
8-FOOT UP AND GO - Agility and coordination
From a seated position in a chair, get up, walk
around a cone (in a figure eight pattern) and return
to the chair in the least amount of time.
Functional Fitness Assessment
What are your fitness goals?
Participate in Healthways SilverSneakers®
Fitness Program’s Functional Fitness
Assessment Activity Session
to check your current fitness level
and set goals for improving the following:
1. Cardiovascular endurance (six-minute walk)
2. Flexibility (scratch test)
3. Upper body muscular strength and
endurance (biceps arm curl)
4. Lower body muscular strength and
endurance (chair stand)
5. Body mass index (waist-to-hip ratio)
6. Dynamic balance
(functional reach test)
7. Agility and coordination for postural stabili-
ty (eight-foot up and go)

  • 4. Objective The overall objective of the SilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment initiative is to provide a safe and effective variety of functional fitness tests specifically designed for our SilverSneakers members. These tests provide information and feedback to participants on activ- ities for daily living (ADL) functions through recognized health and skill-related fitness components: body compo- sition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, speed, power, agility, balance and coordination. Goals The overall goal of the initiative is to offer members the opportunity to measure their physical skills and abilities relative to other older adults, measure improvement while participating in the SilverSneakers Fitness Program and offer a fun and motivating activity to increase retention and participation in a group exercise setting. The SilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment provides an overall “snapshot” of a participant’s functional fitness as compared to data compiled by the LifeSpan project developed by Dr. Roberta Rikli and Dr. Jessie Jones of California State University, Fullerton. The 6-Minute Walk, Scratch Test, Biceps Arm Curl, Chair Stand, Body Mass Index, Functional Reach and 8-Foot Up and Go protocols have been redesigned to offer safe, reliable and valid fit- ness test measurements in a comfortable, non-intimidat- ing group setting. The initial assessment will serve as the benchmark for improvements. Subsequent assessments within eight to 12 weeks offer members comparative infor- mation. Test measurements, normative data and fitness information will be available for all members. Criteria All assessment participants must follow SilverSneakers Fitness Program guidelines for physician clearance spe- cific to the assessment and sign a physical activity waiv- er form prior to testing. The Functional Fitness Assessment can be administered once or many times throughout the year. Time between the tests offers mem- bers the opportunity to make an impact on physiological changes for health, and skill-related fitness components. FUNCTIONAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT The following tests are recommended for partici- pants in the SilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment. Instructions for administering each test follow. 6-MINUTE WALK - Cardiovascular endurance Walk (not run or jog) along a safe, predetermined course and cover as much distance as possible in six minutes. SCRATCH TEST - Flexibility Assess the range of movement in the shoulder joint by reaching one hand over a shoulder and the other hand behind the back, attempting to “touch” the middle fingers on both hands. BICEPS ARM CURL Upper-body muscular strength and endurance Perform as many biceps arm curls in 30 seconds as possible. CHAIR STAND Lower-body muscular strength and endurance Stand from a seated position and return to a seat- ed position as many times as possible in 30 sec- onds. FUNCTIONAL REACH - Dynamic balance Reach as far forward as possible without taking a forward step. BODY MASS INDEX - Waist-to-hip ratio Measure the relationship between weight and height relative to standards developed for overall ideal body weight. 8-FOOT UP AND GO - Agility and coordination From a seated position in a chair, get up, walk around a cone (in a figure eight pattern) and return to the chair in the least amount of time. Functional Fitness Assessment What are your fitness goals? Participate in Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program’s Functional Fitness Assessment Activity Session to check your current fitness level and set goals for improving the following: 1. Cardiovascular endurance (six-minute walk) 2. Flexibility (scratch test) 3. Upper body muscular strength and endurance (biceps arm curl) 4. Lower body muscular strength and endurance (chair stand) 5. Body mass index (waist-to-hip ratio) 6. Dynamic balance (functional reach test) 7. Agility and coordination for postural stabili- ty (eight-foot up and go) Next Event October 16, 2013 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. RACC Fieldhouse ALL ARE WELCOME Fall/Winter 2013-14 Programming Guide - 4 - www.redwoodareacommunitycenter.com
