 Abbreviated as DID
 A rare mental
  disturbance of one’s
  identity that causes them
  to have two or more
  separate and distinct
  personality states that
  have the ability to
  control the individual’s
  behavior
 Affects about 6-10% of
  people in the United
  States and 0.4% in China
  BUT…
 Before the 19th century,
    people with
    Dissociative Identity
    Disorder were
    considered to be
    possessed
 They were imprisoned
    and treated very poorly
 Lobotomy and
    “exorcisms”
 Researchers believe
    that the main cause of
    Dissociative Identity
    Disorder is physical or
    sexual abuse when the
    individual was a child

 They create the alters
    to distance themselves
    from the pain and
    trauma
 A person with
    Dissociative Identity
    Disorder can have 2
    alters, or even 100
    alters
 The average person
    suffering with DID has
    10 alters
 When any alter takes
    over, the individual with
    DID usually doesn’t
    remember what
    happened
 Patients with DID often
    complain about episodes
    of time loss
 Some patients might
    have friends that they
    don’t know, because an
    alter has befriended
    them
 Multiple different
    attitudes
 Feeling of a loss of
    time
 Depression
 Depersonalization
 Flashbacks of
    abuse/trauma
 Sudden anger for no
    reason
 Panic attacks
 Unexplainable phobias
 When a child is  The average age for
abused, researchers initial creation of alters
believe that they is 6 years old
develop the alters,  Children who are
using dissociation as a developing DID are
    defense usually quiet but have
 They become other a short fuse and seem
people so that they to be different at times
    believe the abuse isn’t
    really happening to
    them
 DSM IV explains that the
    diagnostic criteria for
                                   SCID interview/testing
    Dissociative Identity
    Disorder is:
    › 1. Disruption of identity
    › 2. Inability to recall
      important personal
      information
    › 3. Experiences distress
      in social experiences
    › 4.The disturbances
      aren’t culturally
      excepted, such as the
      way people act when
      intoxicated
 The alters are like their
    own people, they can
    have very different
    personalities, they can
    even be a different
    gender
 An alter can take over
    when the individual
    sneezes, closes their
    eyes for longer than a
    blink, or rub their face
 All the alters can be  Some alters can be
different in one way or more aggressive
    another towards the person’s
 They can have environment or
    different voices, towards the person’s
    mannerisms, attitudes, other alters
    thoughts and they can
    speak differently
    regarding sentence
    structure
 Some alters can have
    allergies that their
    “owner” doesn’t
 Right-or-left
    handedness
 Need for eyeglass
    prescription
 Handwriting
 Ages
 Individual’s with DID
    usually go to therapy
    with hypnosis

 Talking about and
    dealing with the
    memories of sexual or
    physical abuse has a
    large impact on
    changing the alters
 When the patient is
    under hypnosis, the
    therapist attempts to
    contact all the alters
    they can separately
 Once the therapist
    understands the roles
of each alter they try to
    find the most
    aggressive alter to
    change their behavior
 The therapist also
    wants to find the alters
    who have the
    memories of the
    trauma to try and help
    them cope
 Once the therapist
    understands everyone,
    they try to unify the
    alters back to the
    original individual,
    getting rid of some of
    the alters if possible
 Herschel Walker was a  Here he explains that
running back for the he wasn’t abused as a
Dallas Cowboys and child but he was
    the Philadelphia bullied
    Eagles
 He doesn’t remember
    winning the Heisman
    Trophy
 He wrote a book called
    Breaking Free: My
    Life with Dissociative
    Identity Disorder
 http://www.youtube.c  She was born with
    om/watch?v=WBCtF_ severe tissue damage
    FrJ48 which made her blind
                            36 years old, born
                               Diana but Margo took
                               over as the host alter
                            3 prominent alters out
                               of her 68
                               › Margo, 16
                               › Jackie, 21
