2. Drunk driving is dangerous, but driving dehydrated is just as
risky. A recent study shows that drivers who are mildly
dehydrated can pose similar risks as that of those drinking
alcohol or taking drugs. Dehydrated drivers committed the same
number of mistakes as that of drunk drivers and twice as many,
compared to well-hydrated motorists.
The Hydration-Dehydration Test
The researchers conducted the study for two days, observing
male drivers using a driving simulator. The first day of test
involved hydrating the participants by encouraging them to
drink 200 ml of water every hour. On the ‘day of dehydration’,
the participants were only allowed to drink 25 ml of water.
3. The participants had to endure a two-hour monotonous drive on a dual
carriageway. They need to overtake slower-moving vehicles in the test.
During the hydration day, the drivers committed 47 errors. The figure increased to
101 during the ‘dry day.’ The researchers explained that this is the exact mistake
rate of sleep-deprived or drunk drivers. Some of the mistakes researchers
observed were late braking, road drifting and crossing rumble strips carelessly.
Impact of Dehydration
Mild dehydration affects performance physically and mentally. It causes
problems such as dizziness, fatigue, headache and weakness. These
symptoms lead to lack of alertness and short-term memory, which
dramatically affects driving performance. It is then important to drink
water periodically when driving. Instead of buying bottled waters, the
more economical, eco-friendly and safer choice is bringing filtered tap
water.
4. Lack of water intake, however, is not just the reason for
dehydration. Researchers reported that being inside hot vehicles or
driving under extremely hot weather conditions might also worsen the
problem. For this reason, the research team urges the public to exercise
proper hydration, take breaks, especially during long journeys.
Dehydration, not only compromises health, but also increases risk for
road accidents. Drinking—water—before driving is important for ensuring
good health and safety.
