altering crimes.
Below are 10 of the world’s most
interesting crimes and criminals.
They are presented in no particular
order.
3. The hypnotic holdup
• Some of the most common crimes are
robberies. No matter where you are in the
world, you are bound to hear robbers
terrorizing unsuspecting victims 24/7. But
in Italy, there was one robber who gave a
twist to this otherwise common crime. The
bandit doesn’t use gun or coercion. His
technique is unlike no other. He uses
hypnotism to get away with his stolen
goods, leaving behind victims who never
knew what had happened to them.
By 2008, the bandit was still at large.
4. Robert Downey Jr.’s
sleepover stint
• Robert Downey became even more
famous when he won the role as Iron
Man’s Tony Stark. However, he was
also famous for other things,
including the one where he got
involved in sleeping inside other
people’s homes, uninvited. In 1996,
heavily intoxicated with controlled
substance, Robert Downey Jr. was
arrested for trespassing and for
being under the influence of a
controlled substance after he
entered the home of a California
family. Downey Jr. ended up sleeping
5. Breaking into prison
• Criminals are supposed to break out
of prison, not break in. But in 2010, out
of sheer desperation, James Merrill
DeVore thought he needed to be in
prison to cope with his mother’s
death. After failing to enter the
prison through the front door, he
tried several ways to enter through
the back door, but his attempts
failed. Although he was charged with
trespassing and disorderly conduct,
DeVore still failed to land in jail.
Instead he was taken to a mental
health institution, and was summoned
6. The branch-wielding
attacker
• And then there’s the story of a St.
Louis man who attacked another
person with a branch. It all happened
when the victim had an argument with
a man who came up to his apartment
where he was “supposed to be
spending the night.” The victim thought
the suspect was attacking him with
what he believed was a knife. Turns
out the suspect was using a primitive
weapon, a branch, which caused some
serious injury to the victim’s hand. The
victim was sent to the hospital and
the investigation is ongoing.
7. Making off with a tank
• In 1995, an unemployed plumber
called Shawn Nelson stole a war
tank from the San Diego National
Guard Armory. Although he went on
some serious destructive rampage,
the tank was not wasn’t loaded and
no bystanders were seriously hurt.
After flattening several cars, he
ended up trapped on a freeway’s
divider. He died shortly after
eluding the police officers who
pried open the tank to retrieve him.
8. Police officer caught in a
deadly wrong-way crash
• Here’s what can be described as one
of the biggest ironies of all. A cop
who chased a motorist for a simple
traffic infraction got fired from
his previous job for drag racing
with speeds of more than 110 miles
per hour on the highway. And while
he was on active duty, he felt the
need to satisfy the call of his
blood.
9. Trying to be like Mike
• When someone wears a facial
tattoo like the former boxing
heavyweight champion Mike
Tyson’s, he’s bound to have some
sort of confidence just like
Mike’s, especially when carrying
out his dark deeds. Adam Roberts
was arrested for breaking in and
stealing from 28 storage units.
Some of the items recovered from
10. Some of the world’s most
well-known prolific
criminals
11. Pedro Lopez

of the most prolific serial killers.
A well-known mass murderer, he
killed 300 people, although he
confessed to killing over 400.
Although he faced jail time, he was
released on bail in 1998 due to
Colombian law on maximum
sentences. Since his release, no one
knows where he is.
12. Carl Panzram
• Carl Panzram was famous for his
killing spree in the 1920s and 1930s
during which he sodomized more
than 1,000 men and killed around
20. Before hanging him, when asked
for any last words, his response
was, "Yes, hurry it up, you Hoosier
bastard! I could hang a dozen men
while you're screwing around!"
13. Josef Fritzl
• Josef Fritzl held her daughter
Elizabeth captive in their home’s
basement for over two decades, and
during which time made her his sex
slave. Not even his own wife knew
about it, as he told her that Elizabeth
ran off with another man. Elizabeth
bore seven children by his father, five
of whom lived in the basement with
her and the two lived with her father
upstairs. Although he repented for
what he had done, he paid for the
years of crime he has committed to
his own flesh and blood.
