- In 2009 an organisation called ComRes surveyed all local government elected officials in the UK.This year we set out to do something similar, and sent out surveys to 733 Councillors and Mayors.The survey received a 36% response rate, with 88% of Councils that were asked participating.24 questions were asked, covering financial situation, the work of councillors, success and failures and attitudes toward residents’ associations.

- Having worked with raw data I have a feeling about the consolidated ‘voices’ of the Councillors and Mayors.There is a significant level of frustration with the lack of understanding on behalf of Central Government regarding the purpose and status of local government.There is frustration with the public and the civil society sector – they feel like the meat in the sandwich on many occasions.But there is significant positivity as well, especially when compared to their UK compatriots.Councillors work long hours and in many cases have a true belief that what they do improves the quality of life in New Zealand.And – believe it or not – our elected representatives regard residents’ associations as important to our Kiwi society.
