Hello every one my name is …… I’m going to show you a little bit of a research project that a few of us from cquniversity have been casually working on for the last couple of years. The project is called the inidcators project.
SO WHAT IS THE INDICATORS PROJECT.
BASICALLY WE ARE LOOKING TO BUILD ON EXISTING RESEARCH AROUND THE ANALYSIS OF USAGE DATA FROM LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS SUCH AS MOODLE. MOST LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (AND MOODLE IS NO EXCEPTION) RECORD THE LOCATION OF EVERY STAFF AND STUDENT CLICK WITHIN THE SYSTEM.
IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG TO NOTICE THERE WERE SOME VERY INTERESTING CORRELATIONS IN THE DATA THAT WE HAD COLLECTED. ESSENTIALLY OUR RESEARCH IS FOLLOWING A WHAT, WHY AND HOW APPROACH.
THE WHAT DESCRIBES THE CORRELATIONS AND INTERESTING THINGS WE FIND IN THE DATA.
THE WHY IS IN DEPTH RESEARCH INTO WHY THAT CORRELATION EXISTS.
ONCE WE HAVE THAT RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSE OF THE CORRELATIONS WE CAN SET ABOUT ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OR EVEN CAPITOLISING ON POSITIVES WE FIND. BEFORE I SHOW YOU ONE OF THE FIRST CORRELATIONS, CAN I ASK THE AUDIENCE IF YOU THINK THERE WOULD BE A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE NUMBER OF CLICKS A DISTANCE STUDENTS MAKES ON THE LMS AND THEIR RESULTING GRADE???
NOTE THAT THIS ONE WAS EXTRACTED FROM BLACKBOARD 6.3 WHICH WAS ONE OF TWO LMS IN USE AT CQUNIVERSITY PRIOR TO THE ADOPTION OF MOODLE AS THE SINGLE LMS IN TERM 1 2010. ???? ????? IF WE WERE TO GROUP STUDENTS BY THEIR AGES <20, 20-30, 30-40 AND 40+, WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR ACTIVITY TO BE?
???? WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT THE DIFFERENCE TO BE BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE STUDENTS?
WHAT WE HAVE LOOKED AT SO FAR IS HISTORICAL DATA OR LAG INDICATORS OF WHAT IS OCCURING. HOW CAN WE USE THIS DATA TO HELP REDUCE THE ATTRITION RATE OF ONLINE STUDENT THAT IS OFTEN 20-60% HIGHER THAN ON CAMPUS STUDENTS?
