Recycling bags bring jobs and other economic
opportunities. The plastic bag industry alone
employs more than 30,000 people.

I have purchased between 40 and 50 “re-usable” plastic bags.
The cost is between 1 to 4 dollars per bag. Friends of mine
have become ill from re-using plastic bags due to bacteria.
I have also witnessed shoplifting in my home town. There is no
way to stop them, as plastic bags are allowed in stores.
Money can be saved and hazards prevented if we
raise awareness and contact our local and state
governments regarding this issue.

Actively take a stand. Stop using recycled bags.
Write your local, state and government leaders.
Recycle your bags at facilities located near you.
Actively take responsibility with your own bags.
Clean or do not use bags that contained meat
or other products that could cause food poisoning.

Retrieved October 5, 2013 from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-04/the-disgusting-consequences-of-liberal-plastic-bag-bans.html In a 2011 study, four researchers examined reusable bags in California and Arizona and found that 51 percent of them contained coliform bacteria. The problem appears to be the habits of the reusers. Seventy-five percent said they keep meat and vegetables in the same bag. When bags were stored in hot car trunks for two hours, the bacteria grew tenfold.

  5. • Slide 5: Why should your audience listen to you? Explain your ethos (credibility).   My audience should listen to me and find me credible because I have been personally affected by the negative effects of the bag ban. I have purchased between 40 and 50 “re-usable” plastic bags, only to be charged between 1 to 4 dollars per bag. I have an associate who has re-used their own plastic bags, only to get food poisoning from the residue of the meat purchased from their last trip to the grocery store. I have witnessed a pair of female customers putting cosmetics into a used plastic bag and then walking out of a Wal-Mart in Austin. There was no way to stop them, as plastic bags are allowed in stores. Source: Rolph, M . (Photographer). (2009). Silence is so accurate. 8. • Slide 8: Supporting Point One: Actively taking responsibility with your own bags. Clean or do not use bags that contained meat or other products that could cause food poisoning. According to Ponnuru, A recent study found good news in that washing bags eliminated 99.9 percent of the bacteria. It undercut even that good news, though, by finding that 97 percent of people reported that they never wash their bags.   Ponnuru, R. (2013, February 4). (Factual evidence from International Association for food protection.) (Ponnuru, 2013). Bags that have also been stored at a private residence could also be susceptible to insects or feces/fertilizer that could be transferred back to the store. Not everyone cleans their bags. In fact, most people don’t. So even if you clean yours, other customers could pass their bacteria or insects into the store. Source: Jurvetson, S.   (Photographer). (2004). Lab tour. 10. • Slide 10: Story about someone that I know who got food poisoning and it is believed to be from re-used shopping bags. A coworker and friend of mine, John Thibodeau, is a typical meat lover. He barbeques and grills meat at his house every weekend like most other Texans. John reuses his plastic bags per city standards on the bag ban. Last July, John became very ill and was vomiting and had diarrhea. Because John re-uses his bags every time he goes to the grocery store, he realized that it was because his plastic bags contained bacteria from the meat he constantly purchased. 11. • Slide 11: Supporting Point Two: write your local government regarding the negative effects of the bag ban. This will give them an idea that the ban is not working. Without a complaint, they do not know that there is a problem. Many lawmakers may not see the day to day side effects of the bag ban because they may not do shopping for themselves and are not as affected as the taxpayers. Your government officials are in office to represent you. Utilize your rights and let them know that people are getting sick, items are being stolen from stores and workers’ jobs may be at stake. You shouldn’t need more than 2 to 3 minutes to describe everything that you’ve learned today. Then tell a member of your household. That’s even easier. You’ll see them at some point today.
