I have purchased between 40 and 50 “re-usable” plastic bags.
The cost is between 1 to 4 dollars per bag. Friends of mine
have become ill from re-using plastic bags due to bacteria.
I have also witnessed shoplifting in my home town. There is no
way to stop them, as plastic bags are allowed in stores.
6. Money can be saved and hazards prevented if we
raise awareness and contact our local and state
governments regarding this issue.

• Slide 1: Hook/attention grabber : Brief stories/facts about the health hazard statistics of reusable bags. Source: Ponnuru, R. (2013, February 4). The Disgusting Consequences of Plastic-Bag Bans. Bloomberg. Retrieved October 5, 2013 from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-04/the-disgusting-consequences-of-liberal-plastic-bag-bans.html In a 2011 study, four researchers examined reusable bags in California and Arizona and found that 51 percent of them contained coliform bacteria. The problem appears to be the habits of the reusers. Seventy-five percent said they keep meat and vegetables in the same bag. When bags were stored in hot car trunks for two hours, the bacteria grew tenfold.

• Slide 3: The Big Idea: If we continue to enforce the plastic shopping bag ban in certain U.S. cities, there will be an increase in environmental and monetary waste as well as health and security hazards associated with customers entering a store with used grocery bags. Source: Lyza . (Photographer). (2004). The New Fred Meyer on Interstate on Lombard . [Photograph], Retrieved October 12, 2013, from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58932090@N00/49545547/
• Slide 4: What’s in it for your audience? Explain why your topic is important or worth discussing. Millions of people and virtually every person that shops are affected either economically or medically by the bag ban. This is worth discussing because a repeal of the bag ban could save lives, jobs and your checkbook. Source: Svadilfari, S . (Photographer). (2008). Men’s Sale. [Photograph], Retrieved October 12, 2013, from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22280677@N07/2614182731/
• Slide 5: Why should your audience listen to you? Explain your ethos (credibility). My audience should listen to me and find me credible because I have been personally affected by the negative effects of the bag ban. I have purchased between 40 and 50 “re-usable” plastic bags, only to be charged between 1 to 4 dollars per bag. I have an associate who has re-used their own plastic bags, only to get food poisoning from the residue of the meat purchased from their last trip to the grocery store. I have witnessed a pair of female customers putting cosmetics into a used plastic bag and then walking out of a Wal-Mart in Austin. There was no way to stop them, as plastic bags are allowed in stores. Source: Rolph, M . (Photographer). (2009). Silence is so accurate. • Slide 6: Call to Adventure (pages 38-39) : Money can be saved and hazards prevented if we raise awareness and contact our local and state governments regarding this issue. It isn’t hard to get our local governments involved. Elected officials are paid to be our voice in local, state and federal government. They won’t know that there is a problem unless we alert them to the problem. Source: Christine, A . (Photographer). (2013). Hebden Post Office. • Slide 7: Preview the three main points that will support your big idea: there will be an increase in environmental and monetary waste as well as health and security hazards associated with customers entering a store with used grocery bags if we do not stop the bag ban. We can stop the ban by 1) Actively taking a stand against reusing recycled bags (refuse to use the potentially harmful recycled plastic bags and do not purchase them until the ban is gone); 2) write your local city council, congressman and governor regarding the negative effects of the bag ban; and 3) recycle your bags as usual in order to protect thousands of jobs across the country and show the lawmakers that the community can get involved and bags can be recycled. • Slide 8: Supporting Point One: Actively taking responsibility with your own bags. Clean or do not use bags that contained meat or other products that could cause food poisoning. According to Ponnuru, A recent study found good news in that washing bags eliminated 99.9 percent of the bacteria. It undercut even that good news, though, by finding that 97 percent of people reported that they never wash their bags. Ponnuru, R. (2013, February 4). The Disgusting Consequences of Plastic-Bag Bans. Bloomberg. Retrieved October 5, 2013 from http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-04/the-disgusting-consequences-of-liberal-plastic-bag-bans.html Source: Morrell, A. (Photographer). (2006). • Slide 9: According to Ponnuru, In a 2011 study , four researchers examined reusable bags in California and Arizona and found that 51 percent of them contained coliform bacteria. (Factual evidence from International Association for food protection.) (Ponnuru, 2013). Bags that have also been stored at a private residence could also be susceptible to insects or feces/fertilizer that could be transferred back to the store. Not everyone cleans their bags. In fact, most people don’t. So even if you clean yours, other customers could pass their bacteria or insects into the store. Source: Jurvetson, S. (Photographer). (2004). Lab tour. • Slide 10: Story about someone that I know who got food poisoning and it is believed to be from re-used shopping bags. A coworker and friend of mine, John Thibodeau, is a typical meat lover. He barbeques and grills meat at his house every weekend like most other Texans. John reuses his plastic bags per city standards on the bag ban. Last July, John became very ill and was vomiting and had diarrhea. Because John re-uses his bags every time he goes to the grocery store, he realized that it was because his plastic bags contained bacteria from the meat he constantly purchased. • Slide 11: Supporting Point Two: write your local government regarding the negative effects of the bag ban. This will give them an idea that the ban is not working. Without a complaint, they do not know that there is a problem. Many lawmakers may not see the day to day side effects of the bag ban because they may not do shopping for themselves and are not as affected as the taxpayers. Your government officials are in office to represent you. Utilize your rights and let them know that people are getting sick, items are being stolen from stores and workers’ jobs may be at stake. • Slide 12: Writing your congressman is an easy way to start: Find yours. http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/ It’s easy to navigate this government site. You can navigate by state and region. In my own personal life, I have used this house site to contact my congressmen and women regarding an issue while deployed overseas. It works, and I recommend that everyone use it to get your voice heard. Inside the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building, Washington, D.C. (2012). • Slide 13: According to Nicholson; Dallas, Texas Kroger rep and TRA President Gary Huddleston announced at a press conference that they'd amassed more than 3,000 signatures against the bag ban that would be delivered to Mayor Mike Rawlings. That petition has six times as many signatures against the ban as the one supporting the ban does. (Factual evidence from Dallas observer, found at http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2013/08/when_city_councilman_dwaine_ca.php and the opposing side (for the bag ban), http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/mayor-rawlings-and-dallas.fb28?source=s.fb&r_by=459632 Source: Herrera, D. • Slide 14: Supporting Point Three: recycle your bags in order to protect thousands of jobs across the country and show the lawmakers that the community can get involved and bags can be recycled. These facilities exist to safely recycle our plastic bags and keep the health hazards low, the bacteria down, theft harder to commit in stores, and keeps people employed. The bag ban seemed like a good idea at the time, but no one thought of the third order effects. Source: Wang, J. (Photographer). (2009). Don’t forget to recycle . • Slide 15: Recycling saves jobs. According to a recent statement from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, a trade group that represents scrap recyclers, 77 percent of paper mills rely on recovered fiber to make some or all of their products. (Factual statement from Huffington Post). In this rough economy, we need to be keeping Americans at work, not finding ways to end their careers. Recycling is good for the environment and keeps tens of thousands employed across the country. Source: Dooley, K. (Photographer). (2013). Recycle Reduce Reuse . • Slide 16: Finding a place to recycle is easy, and most waste disposal organizations work with recycling plants. Also, http://Earth911.com is a directory of recycling plant locations across the United States where residential consumers and commercial organizations can dispose off their recyclable waste. It lists around 100,000 recycling centers and services in its database. (Factual statement, earth911.com) Source: Colorful Recycling Containers for Trash. (2011). • Slide 17: Call to Action: Tell at least three people today about the hazards of re-using old bags instead of recycling them in order to improve our quality of life. It’s easy. When you leave wherever you are now, call a friend and catch up with them. Then talk about the bag ban and all of the negative effects of it. You shouldn’t need more than 2 to 3 minutes to describe everything that you’ve learned today. Then tell a member of your household. That’s even easier. You’ll see them at some point today. Then call one more friend before the day is through and you’ve done it! Source: Whisper. (2008). [Photograph], Retrieved October 12, 2013, from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41054381@N04/4225081605/

• Slide 20: Clincher/new bliss: Telling at least three people today about the dangers of the bag ban can change the future. When you tell someone and they tell others we will soon have increased awareness about how dangerous old, reused bags can be to our health and the jobs of thousands. Fewer thefts will occur in stores, keeping the price lower for you, the consumer. Remember, you are the difference! Source: Westfall, G. (Photographer). (2010). Scream .
