Melanau Costumes
Introduction of Melanau Costumes There are several types of traditional costumes of Melanau. Among the traditional costumes is ‘Baban’ or ‘Serebaeng’.
Melanau  Male  Costumes
Men wear dark-coloured satin fabric with embroidered flowers matched seeding and head dress sengkolon of Jawa.
Men’s shirt and pieces of modern styling bersamping golden oranga brocade, chiffon scarves belted waist berkopiahJawa.
Melanau  Female Costumes
Serebaeng ancient bridal or ‘BajoBabanMelanau’ desoent was styled Nine women and a scarf decorated with silver and golden pieces. ‘Jong’ embroidered ‘sarong’ wearing belts laden also ‘pending’.
Women Melanau styling sleeve shirt with a black velvet embroidered fabrics Sarawak, Brunei, ‘pending’ a large rope belt, pendant, and illuminated headgear kepih bun.
Women's T-shirt styling Melanau original Baban bridal Melanau. Bajukurung with matching short black embroidered cloth. In the chest using 2 pieces of red scarves and jewelry away kepih chest and kepih bun.
MELANAU FOOD
Introduction Of  Melanau  Food Melanauhas many types of food. Examples ‘umai’, ‘siet’, ‘linut’, ‘sagok’, ‘tupek’,and many other traditional food of melanau.
Umai Umai is a sour and spicy taste of raw marinated fish  which is being added with shallots, lime juices or “asampaya”andchilies.  Umai was originally a food for Melanau fishermen on fishing trip to the sea. It was an ideal recipe as it would have been inconvenient and dangerous to cook in their small boats.
sagok Sagok made from Sago powder. Sagok could be eaten with a variety types of food like Siet,     Lelamaih, Pipuih.         Sagok also used to make Selisehor Keliseh. Seliseh is mixed of sagokand fish curry broth.
Linut Linut is also made from Sago powder known as ‘Sei’. Firstly, to make Linut, we need to mix warm water with ‘Sei’ flour. Then we pour in the hot water into the mixture, this will make the substance become solid.
siet Siet which are actually sago-trunk-dwelling-bettle-larvae. This dish can hardly be seen in restaurants, but  can be obtained at the Mukah town market and are often served in melanau homes.
Pipuih ‘Pipiuh’ is Melanau foodduring monsoon season, salted fish or dried fishKasam’. ‘Pipiuh’ is made from a fish called ‘Bebulan’ ( this fish has a lot of bones). The process to prepare pipuih is very hard so most of the veterans know the steps to ensure‘Pipuih’ in a good condition.
Tebaloi Tebaloi also a kind of Melanausnack. Tebaloimade from ‘Sei’ flour .Its fillings can be made from fish, shrimp, 'bubuek‘.

MELANAU  WEDDING
Introduction Of Melanau Wedding  A wedding is the ceremony in which two people are united in marriage or a similar institution. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes Preparations for the wedding took place a few days earlier.
Prospective groom is required to submit dowry gift of ‘penyekab’, ‘berian’ and other gifts, such as ‘adatmenugak’, ‘adatmebin’ and ‘pakan’ the day before the ceremony was held. The submission followed by the wedding.
Wedding was held at the home of both the bride were attended by relatives, neighbours and friends.
Step 1 These are the gifts to the bride from the bridegroom. There are a coconut, money           (pakan), Jewelleries (berian), “penyekab” and “keris”.
Step 2 The representative is counting the money before giving it to the bride’s representative.
Step 3 They are on their way to the bride’s house.

Step 6 At night, 'bergendang' event takes place. The audience enjoy themselves. Usually the male will dance or “Bertandak” and “bermukun”.
Step 7 On the wedding day, mother in law is tying up traditional beads called “ManikKahet” that are blue in colour on the bride’s wrist.
Step 9 Then, the bride will  wear the bracelet that given by her mother in law.
Finally, the ceremony was done.
The bridegroom and the bride are sitting on the platform.
The bride and the bridegroom are taking photo with their family.
Melanau rituals & Believes
Introduction of Melanau Believes Like many other local indigenous     communities, Melanau also has it own customs and beliefs, to avoid misfortunates.
      According to their beliefs, spirits are usually settled in a stream, trees, rocks and so forth.  For the higher spirits, it will live in the area a more  strategic and analyze as estuaries, sea and forest.  It’s called ‘Ipok’ and adored every year in celebration of Kaul.
‘Ipok’ is the highest spirits, and it will live in the area a more  strategic and analyze as estuaries, sea and forest.  ‘Ipok’ and adored every year in celebration of Kaul.
'Ipok' Melanau will hold ceremonial worships ‘Ipok’ festival every year through ‘Kaul’. Celebrated every year with the aim of adoring spirit Kaul (Ipok Kala) to establish peace and to increase the catch.

Taboo also involves all levels of age. Starting from pregnant women, after childbirth, childhood, shaved single time, after marriage, and death are all filled with taboos will be on the person.

If they dream of something bad they should cancel the activities to the following day or else something bad will happen not only to themselves but also to their family members.
During the funeral all members of the family have to dress all in black, meaning that they are mourning – to show their faithfulness to the person concerned. A week or a month after the funeral a cock fighting session takes place, the blood of the cock should be put on the main posts of the house as well as on the legs of all the members of the family – so that the spirit of the death person will not disturb them and they will be allow to go to their friends and relatives houses.

  • 3. Introduction of Melanau Costumes There are several types of traditional costumes of Melanau. Among the traditional costumes is ‘Baban’ or ‘Serebaeng’.

  • 13. Introduction Of Melanau Food Melanauhas many types of food. Examples ‘umai’, ‘siet’, ‘linut’, ‘sagok’, ‘tupek’,and many other traditional food of melanau.
  • 14. Umai Umai is a sour and spicy taste of raw marinated fish which is being added with shallots, lime juices or “asampaya”andchilies. Umai was originally a food for Melanau fishermen on fishing trip to the sea. It was an ideal recipe as it would have been inconvenient and dangerous to cook in their small boats.
  • 15. sagok Sagok made from Sago powder. Sagok could be eaten with a variety types of food like Siet,     Lelamaih, Pipuih.         Sagok also used to make Selisehor Keliseh. Seliseh is mixed of sagokand fish curry broth.
  • 16. Linut Linut is also made from Sago powder known as ‘Sei’. Firstly, to make Linut, we need to mix warm water with ‘Sei’ flour. Then we pour in the hot water into the mixture, this will make the substance become solid.
  • 17. siet Siet which are actually sago-trunk-dwelling-bettle-larvae. This dish can hardly be seen in restaurants, but can be obtained at the Mukah town market and are often served in melanau homes.
  • 18. Pipuih ‘Pipiuh’ is Melanau foodduring monsoon season, salted fish or dried fishKasam’. ‘Pipiuh’ is made from a fish called ‘Bebulan’ ( this fish has a lot of bones). The process to prepare pipuih is very hard so most of the veterans know the steps to ensure‘Pipuih’ in a good condition.
  • 19. Tebaloi Tebaloi also a kind of Melanausnack. Tebaloimade from ‘Sei’ flour .Its fillings can be made from fish, shrimp, 'bubuek‘.

  • 23. Introduction Of Melanau Wedding A wedding is the ceremony in which two people are united in marriage or a similar institution. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes Preparations for the wedding took place a few days earlier.
  • 24. Prospective groom is required to submit dowry gift of ‘penyekab’, ‘berian’ and other gifts, such as ‘adatmenugak’, ‘adatmebin’ and ‘pakan’ the day before the ceremony was held. The submission followed by the wedding.

  • 37. Introduction of Melanau Believes Like many other local indigenous communities, Melanau also has it own customs and beliefs, to avoid misfortunates.
  • 38. According to their beliefs, spirits are usually settled in a stream, trees, rocks and so forth. For the higher spirits, it will live in the area a more strategic and analyze as estuaries, sea and forest. It’s called ‘Ipok’ and adored every year in celebration of Kaul.
