1. What techniques do you use to gain the audiences attention?
Bob said its not what you say its about how you say it. This would suggest that
hand gestures and sound authoritative, this would convey a feeling of credibility,
is providing the truth, making them believe what they here.
Is it difficult to keep unbiased about a story if you personally feel strongly about
it?
Bob stated that it is difficult but that he has never found it a problem. From what
he added to this I have garnered that the anchor/ reporter cannot let their
opinion/views show, they must keep neutral as well as in the sense of being
politically neutral. They cannot be affected emotionally by upsetting stories and
must remain detached from them as how news is delivered effects how an
audience interprets the information that they receive. He also highlights that a
reporter should play devils advocate and be contradictory in their questioning.
How do you construct your news programme to satisfy your target audience?
When talking about Target audience Bob said you know broadly who will watch,
its usually an adult audience and it is unlikely that younger people will watch at
all and if so very few will. Bob went on to state the structure of a Big Centre TV
broadcast. He deems beginning with the big story as being pivotal and that they
present the headlines in 4 distinct parts, hard news, soft news followed by more
headlines finishing up with a very soft story or as he put it 'a squirrel up a tree'.
This has helped me significantly to structure my report.
2. What pre production values and planning do you have to do to make sure you
are hitting the knees of your target audience?
Bob began by deeming it hard to judge what audience you are getting and that
determined by social media. Bob expresses the substantial role that social
something I have considered in the creation of my own broadcast. In terms of
stage where the whole game has changed, people can go out with a camera
two hours of material that is instantly downloaded to a computer which the
computer. Bob here highlights the efficiency which digital technology provides
previous less efficient years. He stated it speeds up the process, all the time
capture the imagination of the viewer, required as a result of many hundreds of
reality that very few people watch news live now, opting to record it or watch it
instead insisting it was the immediacy of it that caused people to do this.
3. Has the increase in the use of social media made your job easier or has it lead
to more sensationalism?
Back on the topic of social media Bob said that it had positive aspects because
instantly meaning the broadcaster doesn't have to waste time ringing up the
contrast he said it could also be gruesome because people film others close to
them. He finished with emphasising it as being great in the context of
media platforms in the form of social network mobile apps such as Twitter
What is the most important job in a news room and why is that?
Bob approached this question in a humble fashion insisting that nobody is more
important than anyone else in a news room but some individuals make
decisions. He said that it all stops at his job, as head of news and presenting
programs he makes decisions and calls on things however the people outside
of the news room exercise self management, making decisions for themselves.
4. Finally, how long does it take you to prepare for one news broadcast at Big
Centre Television?
In this answer Bob states the typical working hours for different news
morning he is on air at half past 7 for 2 hours, there are 11 minute segments
between. Stories get repeated because people dip in and out of news
turned his attention to breaking news recommending you must react to new
morning he will arrive at the news room at 6 and will be on air at 7.30
through the news, put the stories in and check the packages. Bob said that
for a story then you would have to go through 2 minute bulletins as quickly
then they would need to be put together. He would have half an hour for
else would come in whom would be followed on by the late team who had a
and half to put them together possibly with a guest followed by later bulletins
emphasising how vital time management and organisation is when
something that I must consider and then adhere to when planning and
