- Social media are sites that allow people to exchange and share information Social networks are the friends, family, coworkers and special interest groups. It is a reflection of society however, these 'interest' groups can now more easily coordinate organizational efforts. All kinds of people are sharing information about emergency situations. Pics, text, video, sound – all sorts of information is being shared using phones, laptops and mobile devices, smart phones.
- Social media links people across man-made boundaries so that people can link together and organizations can better coordinate activities.
- Social media helps provide situation awareness before, during and immediately after a disaster has occurred.
