In the early 30’s, Clyde Wood worked for Ford Motor Company building bodies on new cars. This love of automobiles encouraged Clyde to open a San Francisco area bodyshop in the 40’s. Son Bob would spend time helping in the shop as early as age 10, and then opening his own shop in 1964. In 1967 Bob became the Bodyshop Manager for Saltness VW, and was blessed with a boss willing to show him how to run a profitable business and who taught him, by example, the importance of taking care of your employees. This led Bob to purchase the successful Cooks Collision body shop in Redwood City from Ray Cook in 1979. Bob’s sons, Don and Rick Wood joined the business during the eighties and proceed it to expand it during the last twenty years into the largest family owned collision repair company in the country.
Currently Cooks Collision has 34 collision repair centers in California, and we will continue to expand our reach.
Over the years we have acquired existing body shops, dramatically transformed vacant buildings and built breathtaking new ground up facilities all with the focus of strategically placing our locations to best utilize our shared resources. We currently have 6 locations in the Southern California market and 28 in Northern California. Our Northern California reach extends throughout the Bay area with coverage from Fremont to Napa and from Redwood City to Tracy. Our multiple locations follow the I-80 corridor and connect with our next largest market, the greater Sacramento Area. Recent acquisitions have placed several locations within miles of each other. Some within blocks of each other. These locations continue to thrive with the business model and partnerships we have put in place. As new opportunities become available, Cooks Collision plans to continue our growth and reach. We are the premier provider of collision repair services in California.
In addition to our Cooks Collision brand of collision repair centers, we are also proud to have developed the sister company Velocity Collision Express. Velocity is a Lean Model Production shop that repairs over 800 vehicles per month. The systems we employ at this facility allow us to bring entry level technicians into the industry and help them develop their trade while contributing to a very high production shop. 2/3rds of the 46 employees at Velocity Collision Express are entry level technicians.
Along with development of our youth at Velocity, Cooks Collision also partners with area trade schools to continue the investment in our future. Cooks Collision is a young company. With over 500 employees, our average age is only 37 years old. We are also seeing a greater number of women entering our industry and we are proud to have many in leadership roles throughout the organization. The youth, energy and diversity of our company allows us to thrive and continue to grow.
At Cooks Collision, we find ways to discover and develop new talent. In 2013, we held our second Cooks University program. This 4-6 week estimator program provides a solid career foundation for these recent trade-school graduates. The small teacher to student ratio allows us the focus needed to bring new employees into the culture of Cooks Collision. The culture of putting people first.
Putting People First is not just our slogan, it’s our drive. Our team’s are actively involved within their communities. They have led, and participated in multiple fund-raising efforts which have supported our local charitable organizations. Giving back to our local communities provides satisfaction and fulfillment to our teams.
This culture of putting people first has helped to double our business in less than 5 years. We have grown from 19 locations and $50 Million in sales to 34 locations and over $90 Million in sales. With an additional 5 locations being developed for 2014, our sales are projected to eclipse $121 Million.
Cooks Collision. Putting people first. It has built our past, strengthened our present and has set the foundation for our future. We are, and will continue to be, the premier provider of Collision Repair Services to California.
