Abstract
Hard Working, Persuasive, Determined, but Ethics are Key
In my portfolio you will find evidence that I am driven through
hard work, high moral convictions, and strong ethical codes and
values. I am a persuasive leader who believes in leading by example.
My “Volunteer of the Year 2010” award from Lock Haven AYSO not
only sets a great example for others, but also provides evidence of my
hard work and determination. With the support of my loving family
and several beloved mentors, I have been able to achieve my goal of
getting a B.S. in Business Administration as a non-traditional
student. I have faced many challenges that made pursuing this goal
quite difficult at times, but I met the challenges head on and have
persevered with a 3.8 GPA. I proudly present my skills and abilities in
the following slides.

starting first in an entry level position, but moving up in the next few years
to a leadership role. I will bring my 25 years of experience in business
related positions along with my educational training to the firm for which I
work and use those experiences to the best of my ability. I am willing to
further my education in order to enhance my capabilities as a marketing
leader. I will tackle every challenge at work with optimism and work hard
to persevere.

Autobiographical Sketch
A Product of Backyard Agriculture
In this essay I provide my autobiographical sketch. I explain how
my father’s lessons in the value of hard work, several supportive
teachers who challenged me to be my best, volunteering in the
community and many interesting experiences throughout my career
have helped me to become a
responsible, organized, compassionate, and hard working individual.
Essay
I grew up in a small town, the fourth of six children. My father
was a very ambitious and hard-working man. With six children to
support, he often worked two jobs. In addition, he believed it was
important to be self-sufficient and proudly practiced “backyard
agriculture…”

Philosophy of Leadership
Lead by Example
In this essay I provide my leadership philosophy, which includes an emphasis on
a strong work ethic. In reference to ethical values Lawrence and Weber explain
that, “such basic rules of behavior are essential for the preservation and
continuation of organized life everywhere” (2008, 90). I believe people make better
choices if they listen to their own instincts. Another important principle by which I
live is congruence: you should say what you do and do what you say. In my position
as an office manager, I always worked hard and did my best. I expected no more
from others than I was not willing to do myself. I also believe leaders must
communicate effectively and expect the same from employees. In position as an
office manager, I encouraged good communication with an open door policy.
Another aspect of my leadership philosophy involves respecting individual talents
and capabilities. As a volunteer leader of Lock Haven AYSO, I found it best if
volunteers were placed in positions that matched their skills and abilities. My
husband and I started in 2007 with just the two of us doing everything, but were able
to turn the organization over to a new regional commissioner in 2009 with about 40
willing volunteers.

Leadership Motivation
People-oriented Leader
I took the 50 question McClelland Leader Motive Profile (Bean, 2009) and
discovered I lean toward being a people-oriented and persuasive leader.
The McClelland Leader Motive Profile also helped me to discover the
following information about what motivates me as a leader:
• I am motivated as a good task/production leader. I like
organizing, strategizing, and delegating production to those most talented in
each respective area of expertise.
• I have a need for achievement and self-control. I always try to do my best and
expect the same from others. I believe each of us is in control of our own
destiny and should exercise self-control at all times.
• I am not interested in leadership at all costs. I have a line at which I would
choose my family, my moral convictions, and my health over getting to the top.

Leadership Feedback
Optimistic, Supportive Team Member, and Socially Responsible
In this essay I discuss the importance of effective self-presentation for leaders
and outline feedback obtained on my own image as viewed by other people. How I
present myself is very important for me to understand. To study my own self-
presentation, I asked three people who know me well to complete a 20 question
inventory developed for participants to give image feedback (Bean, 2009). I also
completed the inventory based on how I view my own self-presentation. The
inventory includes statements related to attitude, confidence, team ability,
assertiveness, ethics, negotiation, compassion, social responsibility, etc. I was happy
to find out that others perceive me as very optimistic and hard-working, as well as, a
supportive team player: all characteristics, which I believe are important for a
successful leader. According to Chemers, “Influence depends on credibility. For
followers to abdicate personal autonomy and allow themselves to be led, they must
believe that the leader's authority is legitimate” (2000). My leadership ability will be
more effective if others perceive me as a good leader.

Leadership Persuasion Skill
Effectively Present a Solution to a Problem
In this essay I address skills associated with leader persuasiveness and explore
my own effectiveness in persuasion. To practice these skills I presented a persuasive
speech to other leadership students on the value of volunteerism using Lock Haven
AYSO as an example and asking them to join as a volunteer. The observers were
asked to judge my persuasiveness and provide feedback. Overall, the judges found
me to be effective in persuasion. Areas where I did well included good posture, body
language, and vocal expression. I was complimented for my
organization, argumentation, and commitment. One area in which the judges said I
could improve is involving the audience more by relating the subject to them. I put
these suggestions to practice just two days later when I presented a persuasive
speech on the problems of using single-use plastic bags with the solution of changing
to reusable bags. After my speech, I offered a free, reusable bag to anyone that
planned to begin using them that day. All 25 people in the room enthusiastically
took a reusable bag. I was complimented on my ability to connect with the
audience, personalize the problem, and offer an effective solution.

Professional Ethics Code
My Actions Make a Difference!
I believe most leaders know what is right and wrong and I believe in doing the
right thing! Every one of us has a “gut” instinct that does not lie to us. If it feels
right, then it is right and we must act accordingly. A good leader inspires ethical
behavior and demonstrates good moral values. Lawrence and Weber (2008) explain
that ethical behavior such as honesty, keeping promises, helping others, and
respecting the rights of others is essential in leadership. Further, “such basic rules of
behavior are essential for the preservation and continuation of organized life
everywhere” (90). Honesty and integrity must be a number one priority of a good
leader. I believe every business has a social responsibility that involves taking into
consideration all company stakeholders. Lawrence and Weber point out what I
believe to be the most important thing every manager should know, “Managers make
good decisions when they pay attention to the effects of their decisions on
stakeholders, as well as stakeholders’ effects on the company” (8). This means that
building strong relationships between the corporation and all stakeholders is an
asset that adds value to the company. I believe I can be an asset to a company by
valuing all company stakeholders and following my personal ethics code.

Marketing Ethics Code
The American Marketing Association endorses an extensive Code of
Ethics for the marketing industry, which I wholeheartedly follow. The
American Marketing Association publishes its code of ethics to its website
and outlines ethical norms and values and encompasses honesty,
responsibility, fairness, respect, openness, citizenship, as well as guidelines
for implementation of the ethics code. Some highlights include: marketers
must do no harm; marketers must foster trust in the marketing system;
marketers must embrace, communicate and practice the fundamental ethics
values that will improve consumer confidence in the integrity of the
marketing exchange system; marketers must be truthful and forthright in
our dealings with customers and stakeholders...

Project Manager
Equipment Management Modernization
I successfully managed a project for the Lock Haven Area Youth Soccer Organization
(AYSO) during the spring 2010 season. The project had three goals:
1. establish a modernized inventory system
2. update the equipment and materials needed to run the program
3. train a new Equipment Manager on the proper procedures involved in
equipment management
As project manager, I was in charge of modernizing the
inventory, budgeting, maintaining equipment, organizing coach
materials, managing equipment storage, and managing three team members. I
developed a task chart to help manage and assess the project. All deliverables were
achieved and all benchmarks were met. Goals 1 & 2 were achieved and
successful, but goal 3 was unable to be achieved due to the new volunteer’s lack of
commitment. This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of volunteer
commitment to non-profit organizations.

Relationship Development
It’s all about Relationships
In this essay I explore the psychology of relationships; particularly,
emphasizing how effective leaders develop their relationships with critical
people. Critical people include peers, subordinates, superiors,
clients/customers, community members, and other important constituents.
In my studies as a marketing and management major at Lock Haven
University, I have learned that building strong relationships is a crucial part
of the business world. Without the ability to form quality relationships,
leaders will not succeed. I participated in a relationship development
exercise in meta-talk (Bean, 2009) with a friend. I learned that I am a
trustworthy and provide strength in relationships. One area my friend
helped me to see is important for me to improve is putting more quality time
into my relationships. Building strong, quality relationships both at home
and at work is a very important aspect of being a good leader and good
employee in general.

Empathy Skill
Listening, Empathizing, and Confirming
In this short essay I explore empathy as a key skill in leadership.
Bass (1990) noted, “The leader must be able to know what followers
want, when they want it, and what prevents them from getting what
they want” (168). I feel in order to be good a leader, one must be able
to truly empathize with all constituent groups. Good leaders must
possess the ability to read body language, to paraphrase both simple
and complex messages, and to successfully confirm interpretations of
messages without contamination. Practicing this skill with other
leadership students as well as three people outside the leadership
class helped me to confirm that I am an empathetic listener. My
classmates told me I am good at reading body language and probing
in order to glean a better understanding of messages.

Managing Conflicts:
As a Parent, a Wife, a Daughter, a Sibling, a Leader
In this essay I discuss my ability as a mediator in conflict management. As a
parent, a wife, a daughter, a sibling, and a leader, I am often faced with conflicts.
Every conflict is unique -- with its own unique solution. According to Bean, “In the
need theory of negotiation all parties are seen as having various needs, desires,
values, and goals that must be addressed if conflict is to be resolved” (2009, 227).
The most important thing a mediator can do to help facilitate a solution, is to get to
the heart of the problem. I have demonstrated my skills in this area using such
techniques as log rolling, trading, and bridging methods. I am able to facilitate
resolutions that satisfy both sides of the conflict. I have managed conflicts in my
family, volunteer organizations, in a classroom role playing setting, and in the
workplace. My peers have praised my ability to facilitate successful resolutions in
classroom role playing activities as well as group activities. As a leader of Lock
Haven AYSO, conflicts arise between both players and parents that have to be
managed in order to maintain civility on the fields.
