Day 3 ASSURE
Analyze Learners
This unit will be taught to a 10th grade Honors biology class that is overloaded with 30
students. There are 20 girls and 10 boys in the class. There are no cognitive/behavioral
IEPs, three of the students are diagnosed with ADD. Although this is a relatively
homogenous honors class, the students still have greatly diverse learning styles.
State Objective
Students will demonstrate their understanding of photosynthesis by creating a visual
representation of the process after completing a WebQuest. All the information on the
visual must have 95% accuracy and include each step in both the light dependent reactions
and the Calvin Cycle. Students will be able to describe the process of photosynthesis to
someone without a science background. Students will participate in class watching the
robotics and recycling video, then by bringing in materials for their robots. They will show
off their creativity by producing an original robot.
Select Methods, Media and Material
-WebQuest on photosynthesis
-YouTube introduction to robots
-Reduce, reuse, recycle song by Jack Johnson… Homework: bring in materials for robots
Utilize Media and Material
-Students will complete a WebQuest on photosynthesis where they look into the details of
the process
-We will watch YouTube introduction to robots to spark student interest
-The reduce, reuse, recycle song by Jack Johnson will inspire students to want to do their
homework of bringing in materials for robots
Require Learner Participation
-Using the framework that they learned from their lab the previous day, students will
complete a WebQuest on photosynthesis where they explore the light dependent reactions
and the Calvin Cycle.
-The YouTube robotics video will show students the big picture of the robots that they will
create and will spark student imagination.
-As a class we will watch a reduce, reuse, recycle song by Jack Johnson, which will be an
opportunity to synthesize some information from a precious unit on ecology. Homework
will be for students to bring in materials for robots
Evaluate and Revise
-In an ideal world we could spend much more time on both the photosynthesis WebQuest
and the robotics assignment
-Students might become easily frustrated with the complicated processes of photosynthesis
