• Lakeview is bordered by West Diversey
Parkway on the south, West Irving Park Road
on the north, North Ravenswood Avenue on
the west, and the shore of Lake Michigan on
the east. The neighborhood itself is located
just south of Wrigleyville.

• Getting to Lakview from Loyola does not take
much time at all! If you walk to the Granville
red line station and take it to Belmont, you’re
there in about 20 minutes!

• Lakeview was used as a camp and trail path
for the Miami, Ottawa, and Winnebago Native
American tribes
• First settler arrived in 1837 named Conrad
Sulzer

• In 1853, one of the first permanent structures
was built by James Rees and Elisha Hundley
called the Hotel Lake View
– Named after the hotel’s unobstructed
view of the shore of Lake Michigan

• This early settlement grew continually because of
increased immigration of farming families from
Germany, Luxembourg, and Sweden
• Also, Lakeview experienced a population boom as
Chicago suffered from a deadly cholera disease

• Land was then sold and housing was built
– Access to this new community was provided by a
wooden plank road which is recognized today as
North Broadway
• The formation of an official governing system
and essential public services soon followed
– Ex. Shopping areas were formed where Clark
Street meets Diverse Parkway to serve the
growing population
