The project was seen from the very start as part of a bigger picture. This is the context of the TSB’s projects in which we have operated.
The original consortium was augmented by additional partners to participate in the ALIP2 Anytime Anywhere project, and then additional partners took part in starting the ALIP3 DAP Connect Business Modelling Project.
The projects together form a coherent roadmap, building towards a complete picture of the delivery of Assisted Living services. These are collectively described in what is becoming called the Assisted Living Toolbox, a framework that was developed under ALIP2.Following from the learning and demonstrations achieved in ALIP1, the follow-on projects have broadened the learning and crystallised the thinking.
One of the major outputs from ALIP1 was the visionary Demonstration Tool. This is a web-based presentation of the concepts of Assisted Living, and it has proved invaluable in developing key technologies and strategies to meet the various demographic needs.
Some of you will remember Deirdre, the subject of ALIP1 vision for telehealth.
Following the inspiration of Deirdre, in ALIP1 TeleMedic Systems and Centrihealth worked together on a proof of concept based on delivering telehealth via a consumer’s set-top box. The primary consideration was on usability and clarity for the user, so that no expert knowledge is required, and health monitoring is done with clear feedback of information via a patient’s TV.
In ALIP2, TeleMedic Systems has made one step towards the Anytime Anywhere philosophy by broadneing its health hub solution to multi-point and multi-user, creating a kind of mesh solution allowing patients to be monitored in a wide variety of locations and situations.
This has a number of possible use cases, taking advantage of the flexibility of the solution.
Another ALIP1 vision was to support people with long-term care needs by giving their informal carers tools to manage the complexity of caring for their relatives alongside their own lifestyles. Microsoft followed this up with proof of concepts including an application called Rally Round to support carers with “Anytime Anywhere” tools centred around the needs of the people they care for.
The concept here is that informal and formal carers can organise their activities to ensure optimal coverage of their responsibilities and the care needs of the patient in a way that helps minimise the disruption to their lives, particularly important to the 6 million carers who also struggle to maintain full-time employment.
The Assisted Living Toolbox has been a major conceptual output from ALIP2.This is still in its developmental stages, but it aims to provide a one stop shop platform for the delivery of services in the Assisted Living world.
The concept is that users may subscribe to services and solutions that are designed to be interoperable at the service-delivery level. They can do this via a variety of platforms.
The solutions and services are offered in a framework that consists of multiple layers of offereing.
This is the grand plan.Looking at billing solutions for informal carers and how this works with statutory formal care.
The Trusted Services project addresses another Assisted Living Toolbox concept, that of authenticating users accessing services in an open and accessible way, while still delivering the level of trust between service providers and users require. It enables service providers to identity-protect their offering without having to invest in proprietary identity services.
