The document describes an online information management system called C-sar that aims to link smallholder farmers to high-value agricultural supply chains. C-sar provides a centralized platform for production management, quality monitoring, traceability, communication and networking across the supply chain. It uses geographic information systems and other modules tailored for different users to facilitate information sharing between producers, processors, and buyers. The system is being implemented and tested with partnerships in several countries to establish sustainable models and generate benefits for all supply chain participants.

Editor's Notes
Hello and welcome to the presentation of Cropster's initiative in the field of ICT for Development. I will present to you a solution, which helps smallholder farmers to link up with high value markets, creating so an efficient supply chain and assuring a sustainable income for farmers.
Let me briefly explain the background and motivation for our system. The situation is, that smallholder farmers suffer from decreasing commodity crop prices. One solution is the diversification into high value markets. Specialty markets require specifically designed products in terms of intrinsic quality, in some cases the fulfillment of certain production standards to meet certification requirements, and it implies the creation of excellent communication channels to enable product traceability. Throughout this presentation I will use the example of the specialty coffee supply chain.
Our vision it to help farmers to access high value markets. We provide linkages between producers and buyers. The use of bi-directional information channels and mutual feedback loops amongst supply chain partners will better balance the supply chain, introduce new efficiencies and enable positive learning processes.
Cropster provides the “C-sar” platform for information management. This online system is suitable for all stakeholders in the supply chain. It supports production management and integrates into all processing steps. Since the product quality needs to meet high standards, a comprehensive quality monitoring and traceability system is the basis. Increased efficiency for data exchange and communication processes add extra value. The system enables communication and networking, provides industry standard security (similar to online banking systems), and features user tailored interfaces for different users through our group/module concept. The platform works also in low-bandwidth environments. Prototypes for mobile access were developed and tested.
The platform is split into modules. This allows a flexible setup, depending on the organizational structure of the users. This slide shows only the very basic modules. Cropster has developed additional modules for industry partners, who have integrated the platform directly in their production processes - for example processing and product management.
Cropsters information sharing concept provides the platform users with functions to publish general group information and selected farm and production information on the Internet. More detailed farm and lot information can be shared to trading partners within the system. This enables efficient and full product traceability.
Cropster adds value to all production data stored in the system through capturing GPS points to farm and field information. All production data can so be put in a geographic context. For example showing farms and product quality on maps, but also providing the basis for linking farm and production data to climate forecast models and other environmental data.
Copster helps development projects to improve their impact. After helping to establish the system through implementation and training, the system makes data capturing and project monitoring more efficient. It brings immediate and direct benefits to all participants, motivating them to continue the usage way beyond the projects scope. Long-term benefits and sustainability are generated trough the unique setup of the system. Cropster C-sar is used by a number of research institutes, development organizations and industry partners.
I thank you very much for your attention and would like to invite you to get in touch with one of our staff members to clarify specific question, discuss your needs and see if Cropster can be your partner for your projects. Thank you very much.
