6th CTJ TEFL Seminar
GENERAL INFORMATION
The 7th CTJ TEFL Seminar will begin on Wednesday, July 22, at
9:15 a.m. Pre-registered participant check-in and on-site
registration will start at 8:30 a.m.

Workshops will run from July 22 through July 24 and will be offered
in the morning and in the afternoon. Workshop participation will be
on a first come, first served basis. When the room reaches its full
capacity, the door will be closed.

Please check schedule for Plenary sessions and Meetings with
Publishers.

*The Opening Day schedule will be slightly different from that of
the following day. See Daily Schedule.

Certificates will be awarded to all participants and handed out at the
end of the event in the Library/Resource Center.

Biographic Information on the Speakers

ALINE GOMES DA SILVA
Aline has graduated in Letras from Universidade Estadual de Goiás (UEG) and has taken two specialization
courses, one in Educational Management (UEG) and the other in English Language (UniAee). She is currently
teaching at UEG, at Anhanguera College and at Practical English Course. She is also currently studying for her
master's degree in Linguistics at the Federal University of Goiás.

AMANDA BRADFORD
Amanda Bradford is an English Language Fellow with the U.S. Department of State in Belém, Brazil. She has
an M.A. TESOL degree from the Monterey Institute for International Studies and a B.A. from the University of
Pennsylvania. She has taught ESL to adults and to university students in the U.S. and served as a Peace Corps
Volunteer in Mozambique, where she taught English at a pedagogical university and secondary school.

ANA MARIA SCANDIUZZI
Ana Maria Scandiuzzi has been a teacher of English for 18 years, 14 of which at Casa Thomas Jefferson. She
has currently been supervising the Kids Fun, Kids, and Top Kids courses at this institution. She holds a B.A. in
English Language and Literature from the Universidade de Brasília.

ANA MARIA MENEZES
An EFL teacher and coordinator in Brazil. Member of the Learning with Computers community and an
enthusiastic edutech researcher.

CARLA ARENA
Carla Arena supervises the Educational Technology area at the Casa Thomas Jefferson (CTJ) and has been
involved in the design and management of CTJ e-learning. She considers herself a lifelong learner. Her main
interests are faculty development and educational technology.

CARLOS GONTOW
Carlos Gontow is an English teacher and an actor and has been involved with teaching English through theater
for more than twenty years. He has also been involved in the preparation of games and activities for his classes
and for the institutions he has worked for. He has extensive experience in teaching children, teenagers and
adults. Carlos is a teacher at Associação Alumni, São Paulo, where he also writes and directs children's plays.
He's the author of the book “The Classroom is a Stage – 40 Short Plays for English Students.”

CLAUDILENE SIQUEIRA GOMES MOREIRA
Claudilene Moreira has been teaching English for 20 years. She has a post–graduation course in Advanced
Studies of English and international certificates of proficiency and has participated in conventions, seminars,
conferences and has been an overseas teacher of English. Her wide experience also covers the areas of
coordination and teacher training.

CLAUDIO AZEVEDO
Claudio Azevedo is Casa Thomas Jefferson's Lake Branch Coordinator and a Teacher Trainer.

CLAUDIO FLEURY
Claudio has been teaching EFL for over 15 years. He's been the EdTech monitor at Casa Thomas Jefferson
Lago Sul branch for over three years and has been helping in the introduction of the online basics course at CTJ.

CRISTIANE ARRUDA
Cristiane Arruda is an Academic Consultant for SBS - Special Book Services, being responsible for the Bilingual
and International Schools market, online resources and whiteboard products. She has a B.A. in Language
Teaching, Translation and Interpreting from UNIBERO. Cristiane has been an English teacher for more than
10 years and has worked in different educational institutions as a teacher and pedagogical coordinator.

DANIEL DUARTE
Daniel Duarte is currently a Sales Representative for Cambridge University Press covering the states of DF, GO
and TO. He has more than ten years of classroom experience as an EFL teacher. He graduated in Business
Administration - Foreign Trade in 2004 (UPIS-DF) and holds an FCE Certificate from Cambridge University.


DANIEL ERIJO
A graduate of Petroleum marketing technology and currently a Teacher Development Course student, Daniel is a
teacher at the Casa Thomas Jefferson.

DÉBORA CABRAL LIMA
She has been a teacher for seven years. She is taking her Master's in Linguistics at UnB. She also has a Michigan
certificate and a CTJ Teacher Development Course certificate.

DENISE DE FELICE
Denise has been an EFL teacher for over 22 years and is currently a Deputy Coordinator at CTJ. She holds a B.A.
in Education and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from UnB. Her field of interest is the connection of the brain to
language learning.

DOMINGOS DI LELLO
Domingos Di Lello has been a teacher of English for 27 years, nine of which have been devoted to supervising the
Kids and the Elementary courses at CTJ.

ELTON CARVALHO
Elton holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from UnB. He's been a teacher for 24 years, 16 of which at CTJ.

ELYSIO SOARES SANTOS JUNIOR
Psychologist, EFL teacher for nine years, currently enrolled in the Master´s program in Applied Linguistics
(UnB), and a technology enthusiast.

ERIKA CRUVINEL
Erika Cruvinel has been teaching English as a foreign language in Brazil for 10 years. Erika is a Deputy
Coordinator at CTJ and she is also a member of the EdTech Team. She has presented workshops on the use of
technology in the classroom and international collaborative projects.

FABIO LUIZ FERREIRA
Fabio holds a B.A. in Translation. He has nine years of experience teaching English and he is currently working at
Casa Thomas Jefferson.

GILMAR D. DA SILVA MATTOS
An EFL teacher since 1989. A degree in Translation (English/Spanish) from UNESP (São José do Rio Preto);
Teacher at CCBEU – Franca – SP since 2004.

HELMARA FEBELIANA REAL DE MORAES
Helmara is the Regional English Language Specialist at the U.S. Consulate General – SP and is taking her
Doctorate at USP.

HELSINGBERG ARCANJO DE CARVALHO
Helsingberg has been a teacher for over 25 years, eight of which at CTJ.

ISABELA VILLAS BOAS
Isabela holds a Doctorate degree in Education from UnB, an MTESL degree from Arizona State University, has
been a CTJ teacher for 23 years and is currently the CTJ General Academic Coordinator.

JACK SCHOLES
Jack is a freelance writer, trainer and ELT specialist with over 35 years experience in many countries around the
world.

JORGE TEIXEIRA
Holding a degree in Letras, a Specialization Course in Materials Design by the University of Chichester - UK, and
with more than 20 years of experience in ELT, Jorge Teixeira has been an English teacher, coordinator and
teacher trainer. Throughout this period, he has gathered valuable insight mostly from teenagers and adults. He
has also held significant positions at the Braz-Tesol Brasilia - Goiania Regional Chapter. At Pearson Longman,
he is currently the ELT Consultant for MG, DF, GO, MT and TO.

JOSE ANTONIO DA SILVA
José Antônio has been teaching English for 20 years. He´s been a CTJ EdTech monitor at the Taguatinga
branch for over three years. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Tesol. He is also an e-tutor for the
British Council-Senai Speak e-English for teachers.

JULIETTA SCHOENMANN
Julietta Schoenmann has been a teacher and trainer since 1986. She worked overseas in China, Turkey, Eritrea,
the Czech Republic and Slovakia teaching English to young learners and adults. After completing a Masters in
Teacher Training for ELT, she started working as a freelance trainer worldwide. Her professional interests
include ways of facilitating teacher development in low resourced environments.

KÁTIA FALCOMER
Kátia has been an EFL teacher since 1987 and a CTJ supervisor for seven years. She holds a Master's degree in
Applied Linguistics from UnB. Her main interest is teacher development.

KATY COX
Katy Cox is currently one of three associates on a teacher development consultancy team called KEYS. Her
most consistent interests have been in teacher development and accuracy in oral production on the part of
linguistic models. With an M.A. in TEFL/TESL from San Francisco University, she upholds an overall belief in the
strength of common goals among teaching colleagues and the positive effect of equally common victories.

LILIAN MARCHESONI
Has been an English teacher for ten years, started teaching at Casa Thomas Jefferson in 2006 and is currently a
member of the Casa's EdTech team. She holds a degree in Translation from UnB.

LISA STEMBEL
Lisa studied Elementary Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) and has completed a course in
Teaching English as a Foreign Language with International TEFL Teacher Training (ITTT). She is currently
teaching at Practical English Course in Anápolis.

LUCIA SANTOS
Lucia Santos has been a teacher and a teacher developer at the Casa Thomas Jefferson for over 25 years, and
was CTJ Deputy Coordinator for 12 years. Now she's in the position of CTJ Main Branch Coordinator. She holds
an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the Universidade de Brasília and participates in the organization and
publication of the journal Desempenho. Her main field of interest is in English phonetics and phonology.

LUELI CERUTI
Teacher & trainer for over 25 years. Cambridge & Michigan Examiner; holds Cambridge CPE and has been a
speaker for international publishers. Formerly worked at IBI and RLC. Currently a teacher and Special Courses
Supervisor at CTJ.

LYLE G. FRENCH
Lyle is the Pedagogical Director of the pioneering bilingual school in Brazil, Escola Cidade Jardim/PlayPen in
São Paulo. He is responsible for curriculum development and teacher education. He has been working in
education for over 15 years, the last nine in Brazil. He holds a BSc & MSc in Psychology. Furthermore, he is the
organiser of the Brazilian Bilingual Schools Conference, which had their third event in 2009.

MAKOTO YAMAMOTO
Has been a teacher and translator for 10 years. He's currently teaching at CTJ, and holds a B.A. in Translation
from UnB and a TDC certificate from CTJ.

MÁRCIA RIBEIRO
Márcia has been an English Teacher for 26 years. She holds a B.A. in English Language and Literature from UnB
and is currently the Juvenile Course Supervisor at Casa Thomas Jefferson.


MARCUS RÉGIS
Has been a teacher for fifteen years and working at the Casa for five. He is currently taking his M.A. in TEFL and is
a member of the Casa's edtech team. Photography is one of his hobbies.

Margarete has a B.A. in English and Journalism. Has been a teacher at Casa Thomas Jefferson for 21 years.

MARIA DA LUZ SILVA DELFINO
Maria da Luz Silva Delfino is a CTJ teacher. She has taught EFL since 1984 and she holds a B.A. in Language Arts
and Teacher Development Course Certificate. She is currently teaching ESL at Wilkes County Schools in North
Carolina, USA.

Michel Pires has a degree in English Teaching and his main interests are English phonology and language

Ph.D. (Applied Linguistics from UFG). Is currently chair of English literatures division from UFG/CAJ, and the
head-coordinator of the UFG/CAJ Language Center.

PATRICIA FAUSTINO
Has been a teacher at CTJ for more than 20 years. She has also worked as a teacher trainer.

Paulo Lima has a degree in Pedagogy, has been teaching EFL since 1990, and has been using projects since
2000.

RAFAEL REIS
Rafael Reis has been working in the ELT field for over ten years and has taught at several schools. He holds a B.A.
in Advertising, a postgraduate degree in Marketing and a CELTA Diploma. Rafael currently works for Heinle,
Cengage Learning, as ELT Marketing and Academic Coordinator, South America.

RENATA CARDOSO
Renata Cardoso holds a Master's Degree in Languages and Pedagogy with specialization in Psychopedagogy
and studies in neuroscience applied to Education. She has large experience in teaching English at different
levels, in coordinating English teaching programs, in developing teaching materials and in teacher training
courses.

RODRIGO SANTANA
Rodrigo has been in the ELT field as a teacher, teacher trainer and coordinator for over 20 years. He is currently
the Academic Director at CCBEU – Goiás – and one of his main roles is to assist students, parents, teachers and

ROGÉRIO (ROGER) EMILIANO DE ASSIS
An English teacher and a teacher trainer for 15 years. Now a Master's Degree candidate in Applied Linguistics

RONALDO MANGUEIRA LIMA JÚNIOR
Ronaldo holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics and is a PhD candidate in Linguistics from UnB. He is a Casa
Thomas Jefferson teacher and teacher trainer. Phonetics and phonology, as well as second language acquisition,
are among his main interests.


SUMMER MARVIN
Summer Marvin has a Masters in TESL from the University of Kansas and a B.A. in English Literature from
Washburn University. She is experienced in teaching English as a Second Language, English for Academic
Purposes, and Business English. Summer is also experienced in developing curriculum and new courses,
training teachers, and facilitating and operating language labs. Currently, she is serving as an English
Language Fellow in Manaus through a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Georgetown

EFL EDUCATORS WORKSHOP – WASHINGTON, D.C.: A DESCRIPTION

In March I had the pleasure to participate in an English Fellow Program called EFL Educators Workshop,
sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and organized by Georgetown University. Eighteen participants from
sixteen developing countries from all corners of the world had the chance to experience an enriching program
that consisted primarily of educational visits. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a useful description of
the program. While the content of the presentation is not of immediate application, participants will nonetheless
have a chance to be better informed about the different types of ESL programs in the United States and their
characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.

EFL TEACHING COMPETENCY PROFILES

This paper aims at presenting the results of a study which dealt with the investigation of the EFL teaching

EFL VERSUS L1 WRITING INSTRUCTION: CONVERGENCES AND DIVERGENCES

This paper describes an educational ethnography with teenage intermediate-level learners in an ELT Institution.
The goal was to document and analyze the learners' writing development in a genre-based, social-interactional
and process-oriented approach, and compare it to these learners' writing instruction in their native language, in
their various schools. The presenter reports the year-long research that resulted in her doctoral dissertation,
defended last November.

PRONUNCIATION BRUSH UP

The workshop provides opportunities for teaching professionals to exercise and practice their speaking
“muscles”. In the session, the presenter will discuss the reasons teachers most often “lose” some of their own
language skills over time and, therefore, require constant development opportunities. We will review the
components involved in pronunciation and we will practice discrete sounds, rhythm, linking & blending and
intonation. As a group, we will use contrastive analysis to tackle troublesome sounds and make language
comparisons. The purpose of the pronunciation class is to allow teachers to practice, ask questions, and learn

This workshop aims at showing the use of PROVERBS to promote cultural awareness and vocabulary
acquisition through several classroom activities. During the session, participants will be provided with ideas on
how to choose themes, language level and cultural aspects in relation to the group of students they have in mind.
The presenter will also share some hands-on activities for teenage groups.

Is discipline a question of imposition or disposition? The word “discipline” may seem embued with regimental
rigidity, but the dimensions of this concept are in fact not confined to predictable parameters. The tactics and
attitudes which contribute to a disciplined learning environment are as varied as the ages and levels any teacher
might deal with during a given semester. This presentation will share at least some of the proven-by-practice
insights and recommendations of your fellow language teaching professionals with regard to how to effectively
include dimensions of discipline in your classroom management.

THE MISSING PIECE OF THE PUZZLE
(RAFAEL REIS – HEINLE, CENGAGE LEARNING)
This workshop will present the 'missing piece of the puzzle' for language teachers and students. It starts by
surveying what we know about language learning and teaching and reviews the linguistic parameters under
which this learning must take place. There will then be a review of the current state of EFL to show how we, as an
industry, present language to students in a linear manner based on a 'teaching causes learning model' of
language learning. Recent research into lexical analysis and vocabulary learning will highlight the relatively little
recycling of vocabulary, the lack of attention to collocation, colligation and lexical phrases in general there is in
typical EFL courses which vastly underestimate the amount of language students need to meet for acquisition to
take place. It will also highlight the conditions under which vocabulary can be acquired. The final section will
show how teachers, students and curriculum designers can provide the missing massive amounts of exposure
students need to consolidate their language knowledge to enable long-term acquisition to take place.
