2. One type of cancer that is not as common as other types
of cancers is cervical cancer. However cervical cancer is
just as dangerous. Because this type of cancer is
potentially life threatening, it is worth learning more
about the condition, its symptoms, diagnosis and
treatment.
Like other types of cancers, cervical cancer is a disease
that occurs when an individual has a rapid growth of
tumor cells in the cervix, which is the opening of the
uterus into the vagina. One thing about cervical cancer is
that the cause is actually known, unlike many other types
of cancer. It is caused by a kind of virus called human
papillomavirus, HPV for short. One important note is that
it has been shown that not all of HPV cause the growth of
tumor cells. Research shows that there are at least 100
different variations of this virus. Research also indicates
that HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for 70% of the cases
of cervical cancer.
3. One of the ways that individuals can get this life
threatening disease is by sexual intercourse. You may not
even know you have it until the cancer cells get out of
control and start creating symptoms that you can
recognize. HPV usually does not have any symptoms at
all. The presence of abnormal cells in the cervix will not
cause symptoms either. There are also usually no cervical
cancer symptoms at the early stages of the condition.
Once the cancer has progressed past the early stages,
one symptom is that a woman can experience bleeding in
between periods that is not typical for her. A woman also
may have changes in her menstrual cycle as well.
Another symptom is traces of blood in normal vaginal
discharge may be found. Another symptom is bleeding
after intercourse along with pain during intercourse can
all be signs of cervical cancer. Often, bleeding occurs
during or after intercourse. Pain during intercourse is
also a common symptom. A woman may also experience
strong pelvic pain, as the tumor grows.
4. To identify if cervical cancer is present, a Pap smear test
is normally used to identify the presence of abnormal
cervix cells. If this test shows any indication of cancer
cells, further tests will likely be used to try to identify if
cancer is actually present. This will normally be a biopsy
where some of the cells from the cervix are taken for lab
testing.
If cancer is found, one of the common treatments is the
surgical removal of the tumor. During the procedure
called hysterectomy, the pelvic lymph nodes are
removed. In some cases, the fallopian tubes and one or
both of the ovaries can be removed. After surgery,
normally chemotherapy and or radiation are used to kill
any additional cancer cells in this area.
Like any cancers, it is important to get an early diagnose,
because cancer is easier to treat in its early stages. That
is why it is important for you to have regular pap tests.
