CWI products are highly effective in handling some of the biggest issues faced in the production and handling of oil and natural gas. The picture in the upper left depicts what can happen when warm oil is brought to the surface and put into cold pipes. The paraffin solidifies and flow is greatly restricted. CWI paraffin inhibitors break complex hydrocarbons such as paraffin and asphaltene, placing them in the oil phase permanently. Flow is restored and pumping pressure is greatly reduced.
The picture in the lower left portrays the environmental damage caused by an oil spill. Cleanup and remediation of spills is difficult and costly. CWI products greatly aid in the cleanup of oil on land and water.
The picture in the lower right is of a strong emulsion. This thick substance contains oil, water and sediment, strongly bound in solution. CWI emulsion breakers separate strong emulsions into distinct phases of oil, water, and sediment.
The picture in the upper right shows produced water flowing from transport vehicles into a pit for disposal. 2 trillion barrels of this water is produced around the world annually. Much of it is injected into deep wells, unrecoverable for reuse. CWI offers water treatment systems that are highly suited to recycling this water.
CWI chemicals work by breaking complex hydrocarbon chains, reducing viscosity and pour point, and placing these simpler chains into the oil phase permanently. These products are highly effective, yet are derived from naturally occurring substances. This differentiates our chemicals from other similar products on the market. Our chemicals are low in cost to produce and are fully effective in low concentrations.
The effect of our chemicals on human skin is possible chapping resulting from breaking the oil in the skin. If our surface cleaners are ingested, the remedy is to drink plenty of water to avoid stomach upset.
From where this man is standing to the far bank is about 250 feet (76 m) and this “canal”, as it is called in Venezuela, extends about 2 miles (3.2 km) in length. It is filled to a depth of about 20 feet (6 m) with the strong emulsion shown in the person’s hand to the lower left. This emulsion contains about 60% oil, 38% water, and 2% sediment. In the past, breaking this emulsion to reclaim the oil and drain the pit has been so costly that the Venezuelan oil agency PDVSA has just built more pits to store it. However, after more than 10 years of accumulation it is a problem they can no longer ignore. Over the past 3 years they have offered up to $40 per barrel of recovered oil to anyone who can drain this and the other pits of accumulated emulsions. This problem is seen in many oil producing nations and presents a growing problem for operators.
CWI developed a demonstration system to break this emulsion. The truck shown in the upper left uses our chemical emulsion breakers to separate 2000 barrels of this emulsion per day. It operates in a continuous process at ambient temperature. The picture in the lower left shows the inlet pipe drawing in the emulsion. The pictures to the right show the output of the system after separation. This oil, shown in the upper right is ready for the sales line. The water shown in the lower right is virtually free of hydrocarbons and can be further treated to render it potable. Production can be scaled to almost any volume.
CWI’s chemicals are not only effective on breaking oil from strong emulsions, they are also able to break it from colloidal solids. The sample shown in the picture to the upper left was removed from the side of the pit shown in the previous slide. Oil has permeated the soil and been baked in the sun. This is equivalent to the tar sands in Canada and other places. To demonstrate the effectiveness of CWI products in recovering this oil, we rented a small cement mixer. CWI chemicals were placed in the mixer with the sample and the solution was mixed into the slurry shown in the upper right. A small sample of the slurry was then collected in the jar shown on the lower left and allowed to settle. Distinct phases of oil and sand can be clearly seen in the jar. Notice also that the oil is not sticking to the walls of the cement mixer. This is because CWI chemicals create a “water wet” surface in the mixer. A quick spray of water is all that is required to clean the surface of the mixer right to the bare metal. This metal is now free of hydrocarbons.
The same effects demonstrated in breaking oil emulsions and removal of oil from surfaces occurs in tanks. Thick sludge from the bottom of a tank is shown in the beaker to the left. After adding CWI chemicals to the sludge, clear phases of oil, water and sediment can be seen in the beaker on the right. Full appreciation of the implications of what is seen in the beakers is gained only when you understand how our competitors remove sludge and clean tanks like the ones shown on the right. Conventional methods of cleaning these tanks involve draining the tanks and sending crews into the tanks with shovels to remove the sludge. This is hazardous and time consuming.
CWI simply injects its chemicals into the tank and breaks the sludge. After the sludge is broken, pumps are used to remove the liquid and sediment. More than 95% of the oil is recovered from the sludge and is available for resale. The tanks are left clean to the bare metal and are back in service in less than 30 days.
CWI chemicals have been used to stimulate production in over 70 oil wells. The plots above depict production data from three wells in Venezuela treated in 2001 in a pilot study. Each plot shows production levels spanning a period of one year. At the center of the plots, a vertical line is shown at the point CWI products were injected. After treatment, production was nearly doubled in these wells. These three wells produced an additional 42,292 barrels over an average production period of just over 100 days after stimulation.
The picture to the lower left shows what happens when heavy rains flood the large Venezuelan pits shown in an earlier slide. CWI products were used for cleanup and remediation of this spill. To demonstrate the ability of our products to remove the oil, a sample of contaminated foliage from this spill was place in a jar along with our chemicals. The jar shows clear phases of oil, water, foliage and sediment in the bottom. The picture in the lower right clearly shows how hydrocarbons are quickly broken by our surface cleaners.
The same spill shown on the left of the previous slide also covered a creek with oil. The picture to the right of this slide shows what happens when our product is applied to the surface of water covered by oil. This creek was cleared of oil by spraying the surface with our chemicals and driving the oil to two collection points in the main branch of this creek. CWI plans to develop processes for removal of oil from the surface of oceans by containing spills with booms and driving the oil to collection points using our chemicals.
The plot to the upper right of this slide shows what happens when CWI paraffin and asphaltene inhibitors are injected into this thick oil. The blue line shows that the viscosity of the oil is reduced by approximately 80%. The green numbers along the x-axis show that this CWI product is fully effective at a concentration of only 800 parts per million. The plot to the lower right shows a reduction of approximately 28% in flowing friction resulting from the “water wet” surface our products create in metal pipes, tanks and other infrastructure. After injection with our chemicals, this thick mass of oil will now flow in this pipe as liquid oil with reduced friction. Existing accumulations are removed from the interior wall of pipes and additional accumulations prevented.
This table summarizes the products presented in the previous slides.
CWI offers GlobalSep electrocoagulation systems for the treatment of oil and natural gas wastewater streams. These systems are well suited to the removal of contaminants commonly found in these industries. The solids removed from contaminated water through electrocoagulation are inert, reducing the cost of disposal. A short list of the contaminants removed and removal rates are shown on the right.
The produced water shown in the picture to the top center of this slide is of highly contaminated produced water. After passing through the electrocoagulation system, a sample of the water was placed in the cup being held in the right hand of the operator shown in the picture to the right. The pipe in the operator’s left hand contains only cotton fiber. Clear water can be seen in the cup at the bottom.
These are before and after pictures of cleaning projects where CWI chemicals were used. From top to bottom these grates were sprayed under pressure with CWI chemicals and then rinsed with water.
The electrical cabinets shown to the right were completely cleaned of baked on accumulations without harm to the paint.
This piping infrastructure was cleaned completely of accumulations. Note that even the sand is free of hydrocarbons after cleaning.
Even wildlife was cleaned with our chemicals.
The natural color of these rocks is returned after cleaning with our chemicals.
