Welcome
The Osterville Village Library is committed
WELCOME

                          to spreading knowledge and strengthening
                          community through programs and outreach
beyond the four walls of our beautiful new
facility. We think this new publication is a
great way to inform visitors and residents
about what the village has to offer, support
our non-profit colleagues and the business
community and, at the same time, raise
money to help support the library. It fills an
information gap and we’re excited to provide
this new annual resource. The net proceeds
from the advertising sales of this guide will
                          benefit the Osterville Village Library.
Our first edition includes several articles we hope you’ll
find informative and entertaining, and a comprehensive,
month-by-month calendar of events from May 2013
through April 2014. A digital version of the calendar is

GOLFING

The name of golf course architect Donald Ross is
famous all over the world. Ross designed many
championship courses during the period 1900 to 1948
including the spectacular Pinehurst #2 in North
Carolina, the site of many major tournaments.
The village of Osterville has not one, but two Donald
Ross Golf courses. Winding through the village is the
Wianno Golf Course. Originally built as a nine-hole links
course in 1916, the club hired Mr. Ross in 1919 to redesign
the old nine and design a second nine holes on recently
purchased land west of Parker Road. The resulting
eighteen hole course covers 6,022 yards with a par of
                                70. The par five fourth hole takes the players to the very
edge of North Bay with its great views. The tenth hole,
a 418 yard par four, has been described as one of the
outstanding par four holes in New England.

For many of the early years, there was a caddy camp on the lake
near the 18th tee. Young boys from the city would spend summers
there earning money and learning the game.
Donald Ross returned to Osterville in 1927 to design and build the
Oyster Harbors Golf Course on the gated community of Oyster
Harbors on Great Island. Oyster Harbors was described by Mr. Ross
as one of his favorite layouts. Playing 6,800 yards to par 72, the
course includes many fairway bunkers and offers scenic water views.
Larry Gavrich, who writes a blog called
Golf Community Reviews, reminisced
about a round at Oyster Harbors: “As we
teed off in balmy weather, I was tempted
to ask my golfing partner, ‘Is this heaven?’
‘Nah,’ he most likely would have responded,
‘it’s just Oyster Harbors.’” Gavrich went on
to comment, “The golf course transports you
back to the early part of the 20th Century
when golf architects didn’t plow up the land
into unnatural moguls or force fit the course
between a group of homes. Mother Nature
did much of the work for Donald Ross at
Oyster Harbors….”
Although both golf courses are private,
there are public opportunities to play.
The Osterville Village Library is hosting
its 37th Annual Golf Tournament on
May 31, 2013 at the Wianno Club Golf
Course. For more information, please

GRAND OLD FLAG

Early in the history of Osterville, the area at
the intersection of Parker Road, Bay Street,
and Wianno Avenue housed the village
hay scales where produce in this farming
                                             community was weighed. Eventually the
island at the center of these streets was
turned into a World War I memorial on which
the names of local service men and women
were etched in bronze to acknowledge and
                                             honor their service.
Standing guard over the memorial, waving
high and wide from a 70-foot flag pole, Old
Glory signals entry into the village. It is a
guide post welcoming visitors, and signaling
“home sweet home” for residents. It is also
a tribute honoring those who served and s
acrificed for their community. And for many
years, tending to the flagpole was the
particular honor and responsibility of long-
time village resident Townsend “Townie” Hornor. Every single day
for years he raised and lowered that flag. When it became frayed
and worn by exposure to harsh summer sun and frigid winter wind,
he paid to replace the flag himself.
And when Townie died in 2005, Cape Cod native Russ Jacobson
took over these responsibilities with the help of his wife Susan, raising
and lowering the flag, making sure the pole itself was working well,
even planting and tending the flowers that adorn the memorial.

And now there are grandchildren.
Russ fondly recalls bringing them

But they are quick to add that they

Despite the difficulties, Russ is devoted to his task, with help from Susan,

Why? For him, it’s simple. “I do it because I love Osterville,” he says.

HIT THE ROAD

There’s no better way to get to know Osterville than to hit
the road on foot or bike. And, for those who like to wander
off road, we’ve got some great options as well. These great
routes will reward you with great views along the way.
                            Hit the pavement
All of the routes in this section start at the corner of Wianno
Avenue and West Bay Road (in front of the Osterville Library,
looking at the post office across the street).

Go right and head down Wianno Avenue to the end, where
you can pause for a great view of the ocean. Turn right onto

left. A successful summer hotel called The Cotocheset House
was built in 1873 and stood on this site. The foundation of
the hotel was made of stone taken from Daniel Webster’s
Boston mansion which had been destroyed by fire in 1872.
The Cotocheset House itself burned to the ground as well
in 1887, but was immediately rebuilt. The “new” Cotocheset
House, the present Wianno Clubhouse, opened in July of
1888. Continue to the end of Sea View Avenue and enjoy
the views of Sampsons Island and Oyster Harbors across the
water. To return, head back down Sea View and take a left
onto Eel River Road. At the end, take a right on West Bay to
get back to the village, or take a short detour to the left to
visit Crosby Yacht Yard, where boat building and repair has
taken place since the early 1800s.

 Joshua’s Pond
Located just off Tower Hill Road. As you drive into the parking lot, the trail
is to the right of the pond. Be careful not to turn an ankle on protruding tree
roots along the way. The path winds along the shore of Joshua’s Pond. About ¾
of a mile into the loop there’s a fork. Keep to the left, continue to follow the path
and about another ½ mile along you’ll find yourself with Joshua’s Pond on one
side and Micah’s Pond on the other. Don’t be surprised to see red tail hawks, or
even a stray deer. The path continues to wind around Micah’s Pond and brings
you back onto Pond Street. Or, retrace your steps to the Tower Hill Parking lot.

                                                                          FISHING
Cape Cod is certainly considered a world-class fishing
destination, and Osterville in particular offers anglers an
incredible variety of landscapes. From the vast system
of estuaries and inshore bays to open ocean beaches,
anglers can catch trophy fish right from the shore, harbor
jetties, a boat, a kayak and even a paddleboard.
Here are some specific areas to try next time you decide to
     go fishing:
Dowses Beach: In recent years, a nice handicap accessible
pier was built at the east end of the parking lot at Dowses
beach. From this platform, anglers can catch striped bass,
bluefish and scup that are passing through the inlet that
connects East Bay to Nantucket Sound. There are even
cutting boards available to fillet your catch. On the open
ocean side, you will find anglers spread out along the rock
jetty that extends out into the ocean. Early mornings at first
light is a great time to find some fish.
The Bays: West Bay, North Bay and Prince’s Cove provide
an amazing inshore fishery right in the backyard of Osterville.
Striped bass prefer colder water, so during the months of
May and October, you can find large fish close to home.
You will see anglers cruising around in small skiffs, aluminum
boats and kayaks. Smaller “schoolie” bass remain in the
bays all summer and bluefish don’t mind the warmer summer
     water temperatures.
                                                            CONT’D

                                       www.ostervillevillagelibrary.org 21
Osterville Cut: During the fishing season (late April through
October) you will find anglers on the rock jetty at the Osterville Cut (at
the end of Sea View Ave.) on a daily basis. The current can be moving
through the inlet at a rapid speed, so it is often best to use a weighted
jig or some lure that will get down in the current. However, always keep
FISHING

your eyes out for breaking fish. Early mornings will often produce large
schools of breaking striped bass that can be an incredible sight. Cast a
popper into the mix and you’re almost certain to get a fish. My favorite
“go to” popper is a white “smack it.”

          Words of Wisdom
Here are a few pointers culled from my experience fishing around
          Osterville:
Bluefish: By Memorial Day weekend, bluefish have usually arrived
in large numbers. Your best shot is from any ocean facing beach such
as Dowses, the beach at the end of Wianno Ave., the Osterville Cut
jetty or Sampson’s Island. Casting surface poppers is usually all it takes
to attract these toothy game fish. However, don’t forget a wire leader
when chasing blues, as their sharp teeth can easily slice through your
fishing line. If you have a boat, sometimes it’s as simple as driving out
the Osterville Cut and looking for birds swarming over schools of fish.
I often see breaking bluefish right in the channel.
Bottom Fish and Southern Speedsters: In addition to striped
bass and bluefish, the rocky shoals just outside the Osterville Cut, attract
anglers from many states for the incredible supply of black sea bass and
scup. These are great fish to target with kids and black sea bass is one
of the best eating fares in town. In the fall, Osterville residents will notice
a fleet of small boats racing around off the Wianno Club. They are
chasing False Albacore, Bonito and Spanish Mackerel, all southern fish
that arrive late summer when the water temps heat up. These fish are
a favorite for anglers with fly rods and light tackle. They are tricky to
catch, but provide an exciting fishery.

GETTING STARTED
Tackle Shops and Saltwater License: The best resource for advice on
rods, reels, lures and bait is always your local tackle shops. Just minutes
from Osterville are Powderhorn Outfitters on Barnstable Road and
Sports Port on West Main Street, both in Hyannis. They will get you
set up with the correct gear and provide tips on location, technique
and provide you with up-to-date reports on when and where the fish
are biting.
In 2011 a new regulation was enacted that now requires anglers to
have saltwater fishing licenses. Here is a quick recap of the rule: under
16 years of age, you are not required to have a license. Fishing on
a properly licensed charter boat (see sidebar, page 24), you are not
required to have a license. Over age 60, you are required to have
a license, but there is no cost. Everyone else, $10 and you are good to
go. However, while most tackle shops sell freshwater licenses; you will
have to get your saltwater license by calling 866.703.1925 or online at
www.mass.gov/dfwele/licensing/index.htm.

GETTING OUT THERE
Osterville Anglers Club: Established in 1988 by local Osterville
businessmen, the OAC is now celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Located in a beautiful waterfront facility in Crosby Yacht Basin,
The OAC considers itself the Cape’s best family fishing club. It is
truly a year-round club with winter seminars and workshops, social
events and a schedule of tournaments throughout the summer. At
a cost of $500 per year for a family membership, the OAC is also
considered one of the Cape’s most affordable clubs. For information

Charter Boats
Whether you are new to fishing or an old salt, the best experience can often
be with a professional charter captain. Typically you can just show up with

COTé BROTHERS

                The Coté Brothers
The late Robert Kennedy observed, “Few will have the greatness
to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion
of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history
                          of this generation.”
And that is exactly what is happening in Osterville. Lifelong residents
                          – brothers Nat and James Coté – are part of a new generation of
committed business people and civic leaders who are carrying on the
small-town traditions that make this community unique, while paving
the way for new ones that will guarantee its continued success.
Both of the Cotés were born and educated here. Nat, 35, then headed
to Keene State University in New Hampshire, while baby brother James,
26, graduated from Gwynedd Mercy College in Pennsylvania.
But both came back home to the place they’d always loved, and are
now operating thriving businesses in the heart of the village.
In November 2010, James took over ownership of Osterville House
and Garden, where he had worked since his teens. Just a few short
months later, in April of 2011, Nat bought what had long been the
Osterville Cheese Shop, creating what is now Wianno Green Cafe,
serving breakfast and lunch with a bird’s eye view of the village.
Nat couldn’t be happier to be living and working in his hometown.
“There’s something special about Osterville,” he says. “To be so close
to the water, to have the ability to walk everywhere – these are just
some of the things that make this place special, but mostly it’s the
people. I love knowing all my customers – and getting to know
                          new ones.”

tha he has long loved hardware

as a hub in a community.
“They’re great places, actually.
I love being able to help people
solve their problems.”
He is so drawn to helping his neighbors that he also chose to
become a Barnstable Town Councilor, representing the village.
“I really wanted to play a bigger role in the life of the village.”
He is also a member of the Osterville Business and Professional
Association, as well as the Osterville Village Association.
James and his wife Megan also recently bought a home in the
center of the village, ideally located for a quick commute to work.
“I just love this village,” he said. “There’s just that small-town
something about it that makes it special. It’s nice to be able to
walk down the street and know your neighbors.”

Osterville: Gone to the Dogs
GONE TO THE DOGS

It’s a dog’s life ... if you’re lucky enough to be a dog living in Osterville,
that is. While Osterville is renowned as a great walking village, it’s
not just great for two-legged residents. Osterville is a dog-friendly
community with plenty of parks, paths, sidewalks, and beaches (note
that the latter are available for dog walking September 16th through
May 14th) open to well-behaved, licensed, and properly restrained
                           pooches.
But perhaps what makes this place so special for our canine friends is
the passion dog owners have for their companions. For many, Fido is
not just an animal, but rather a part of the family and frequently can be
found cruising the byways in (well-ventilated)
autos and trotting down village avenues.
One recent afternoon dog owner and
Osterville resident Dick Weir walked into
Osterville House and Garden to ask the
proprietor a question, and Sheila, his four-
year-old shih tzu tagged along beside him
at the end of a fashionable leash. Sheila, a
regular in the store – and in the village –
received a round of howdy-dos from the staff.
Weir delights that the village is so welcoming
to his dog – and to her many canine friends.
He knows all the shops (and there are many)
that provide treats for dogs, and some that
even place bowls of water outside the door
                                                      for a passing pup.

village because it’s a good place for
a stroll – as long as you are fastidious
about picking up after your dog,” he
says. “The library and the post office
are great places for dogs – they offer
    cookies.”
And then there is the postman who
keeps canine cookies in the truck.
Sheila has gotten so used to receiving
his treats that she now follows all postal
    trucks, hoping for a treat.
Osterville formally acknowledges its love of dogs several times a year.
The Annual Mutts and Martinis social, which will be held on the Village
Green this year Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 5:30-7:30 PM, is a
social for dogs and their owners. The former indulge in a little puppy
socialization while the latter mix it up over hors d’oeuvres and martinis.
Weir loves the event, but emphasizes that Sheila knows her limits.
“Sheila can take about 20 minutes of socializing at Mutts and Martinis,
and then it’s time to go home.” See our Event Calendar on page 40 for
    more details on this event.

Osterville Fun Facts!

FUN FACTS

Osterville has a rich and storied history. Here are just a few
fun facts – perfect icebreakers for your next party:

                    •	Until the late 1980s, Osterville was the only place on Cape Cod to
have direct long distance and international dialing without the
                    	 need for telephone operator assistance.
                    •	Although Ralph and Martha Cahoon may make you think of Cotuit,
they actually started their store on Main Street in Osterville by buying
pre-made furniture at factories and then adding their artistic touch.

Did you know that the Wianno Yacht Club was
once at the end of Wianno Avenue?
                    •	Captain Kidd is reputed to have buried his treasure of gold coins
on Grand Island (now known as Oyster Harbors) but he was never
able to retrieve it as it was cursed by the woman he jilted known
                    	 as Hannah Screecham.
                    •	The first bridge connecting Little Island to the mainland was not
                    	 built until 1891.
                    • In 1910, there were more than 5 large hotels in Osterville, including
the Cotocheset House, the Crosby House, and East Bay Lodge.
                    • In the first quarter of the twentieth century, there were as many as
seven places in the Village to buy food including an A&P, the First
National and Echo supermarkets, and specialty stores such as
Williams meat market, Kalas’ fruit store, and E.E.C. Swift’s, which
dates back to 1858 (now Fancy’s Market).

•	Speaking of Swift’s, one of the Swift brothers
went on to create a $250 million dollar meat
packing empire in Chicago in the early 1900s,
and he invented the refrigerated railroad car to
transport his products. He learned his craft on
his family’s Cape Cod farm and as the butcher
	 at Swift’s in Osterville.
•	Until the area was settled by Europeans,
Osterville was part of the “south sea lands”
where Wampanoags came each summer to
farm, fish and to enjoy the summer breezes.
• While Osterville is well-known for its Crosby
boats, Oliver Hinckley, whose yard was at the
foot of Bay Street, built 23 vessels ranging
	    from 53 to 160 tons between 1817 and 1845.
• Route 28 used to run through the center of
Osterville; from South County Road, down
Main Street, across the Centerville Bridge.)

  • 4. Welcome The Osterville Village Library is committed WELCOME to spreading knowledge and strengthening community through programs and outreach beyond the four walls of our beautiful new facility. We think this new publication is a great way to inform visitors and residents about what the village has to offer, support our non-profit colleagues and the business community and, at the same time, raise money to help support the library. It fills an information gap and we’re excited to provide this new annual resource. The net proceeds from the advertising sales of this guide will benefit the Osterville Village Library. Our first edition includes several articles we hope you’ll find informative and entertaining, and a comprehensive, month-by-month calendar of events from May 2013 through April 2014. A digital version of the calendar is also available on line at www.experienceosterville.com and www.ostervillevillagelibrary.org. Be sure to check on line for any last-minute additions to the village’s activities and events. And follow Osterville Village on Facebook and the village and library on Twitter (@Osterville and @ostervillelib)! You’ll be sure not to miss all the great activities and events the library and our colleagues will be offering during the next year. About Osterville Village Library Osterville Village Library is a free provider of education and information and offers free materials, computer access, classes, exhibitions, concerts, programming, community meeting space and more to both residents and visitors of all ages. To offer this wide array of free programming, The Osterville Village Library relies on both public and private funding. Ross designed many championship courses during the period 1900 to 1948 including the spectacular Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina, the site of many major tournaments. The village of Osterville has not one, but two Donald Ross Golf courses. Winding through the village is the Wianno Golf Course. Originally built as a nine-hole links course in 1916, the club hired Mr. Ross in 1919 to redesign the old nine and design a second nine holes on recently purchased land west of Parker Road. The resulting eighteen hole course covers 6,022 yards with a par of 70. The par five fourth hole takes the players to the very edge of North Bay with its great views. The tenth hole, a 418 yard par four, has been described as one of the outstanding par four holes in New England. 37th annual osterville village library golf tournament Wianno Club Golf Course May 31, 2013 Sponsor: Centinel Financial Group, LLC Lunch sponsor: Jackson National Proceeds to benefit the Osterville Village Library Entry Fee: $200 per player (includes lunch, cart, golf, prizes, dinner and music) limited field 6

Young boys from the city would spend summers there earning money and learning the game. Donald Ross returned to Osterville in 1927 to design and build the Oyster Harbors Golf Course on the gated community of Oyster Harbors on Great Island. Oyster Harbors was described by Mr. Ross as one of his favorite layouts. Playing 6,800 yards to par 72, the course includes many fairway bunkers and offers scenic water views. Larry Gavrich, who writes a blog called Golf Community Reviews, reminisced about a round at Oyster Harbors: “As we teed off in balmy weather, I was tempted to ask my golfing partner, ‘Is this heaven?’ ‘Nah,’ he most likely would have responded, ‘it’s just Oyster Harbors.’” Gavrich went on to comment, “The golf course transports you back to the early part of the 20th Century when golf architects didn’t plow up the land into unnatural moguls or force fit the course between a group of homes. Mother Nature did much of the work for Donald Ross at Oyster Harbors….” Although both golf courses are private, there are public opportunities to play. The Osterville Village Library is hosting its 37th Annual Golf Tournament on May 31, 2013 at the Wianno Club Golf Course. • 12. It’s a Grand Old Flag GRAND OLD FLAG Early in the history of Osterville, the area at the intersection of Parker Road, Bay Street, and Wianno Avenue housed the village hay scales where produce in this farming community was weighed. Eventually the island at the center of these streets was turned into a World War I memorial on which the names of local service men and women were etched in bronze to acknowledge and honor their service. Standing guard over the memorial, waving high and wide from a 70-foot flag pole, Old Glory signals entry into the village. It is a guide post welcoming visitors, and signaling “home sweet home” for residents. It is also a tribute honoring those who served and s acrificed for their community. And for many years, tending to the flagpole was the particular honor and responsibility of long- time village resident Townsend “Townie” Hornor. Every single day for years he raised and lowered that flag. When it became frayed and worn by exposure to harsh summer sun and frigid winter wind, he paid to replace the flag himself. And when Townie died in 2005, Cape Cod native Russ Jacobson took over these responsibilities with the help of his wife Susan, raising and lowering the flag, making sure the pole itself was working well, even planting and tending the flowers that adorn the memorial. • 13. Russ and Osterville native Susan GRAND OLD FLAG were high school sweethearts, have been married 48 years, and have lived most of those years in the village, where they brought up their own three children. “Osterville is such a unique village; it’s a beautiful place to bring up kids,” Russ recently said, with Susan by his side. And now there are grandchildren. Russ fondly recalls bringing them to the memorial to help him plant and tend flowers. “It is a great way for children to learn about their heritage and to learn about being part of a community – and giving back Rachel Seldon, one of Russ and Susan Jacobson’s to that community.” grand-nieces, learns how to raise and lower the For years, care of the flagpole has flag properly. been a labor of love for these two. But they are quick to add that they have received much support from fellow community members throughout the years, including those who have donated flowers, helped with irrigation, reworked the aging pole, donated lighting, and bought and paid for new flags as each one wears out. Despite the difficulties, Russ is devoted to his task, with help from Susan, their grandchildren, and much needed support from the community. Why? For him, it’s simple. “I do it because I love Osterville,” he says. – Karyn Kuhn A center for all ages and levels of fitness Cardio & Strength Equipment | Free Weights Spin | Personal & Group Training Fit Training (Denise White) | M.E.C.A. • 16. Hit the Road Osterville on foot or bike HIT THE ROAD There’s no better way to get to know Osterville than to hit the road on foot or bike. And, for those who like to wander off road, we’ve got some great options as well. These great routes will reward you with great views along the way. Hit the pavement All of the routes in this section start at the corner of Wianno Avenue and West Bay Road (in front of the Osterville Library, looking at the post office across the street). The Big Loop Distance: 5.5 miles Go right and head down Wianno Avenue to the end, where you can pause for a great view of the ocean. Turn right onto Sea View Avenue. You’ll see the stately Wianno Club on your left. A successful summer hotel called The Cotocheset House was built in 1873 and stood on this site. The foundation of the hotel was made of stone taken from Daniel Webster’s Boston mansion which had been destroyed by fire in 1872. The Cotocheset House itself burned to the ground as well in 1887, but was immediately rebuilt. The “new” Cotocheset House, the present Wianno Clubhouse, opened in July of 1888. Continue to the end of Sea View Avenue and enjoy the views of Sampsons Island and Oyster Harbors across the water. To return, head back down Sea View and take a left onto Eel River Road. At the end, take a right on West Bay to get back to the village, or take a short detour to the left to visit Crosby Yacht Yard, where boat building and repair has taken place since the early 1800s. Train for the Road Race Distance: 3.1 miles (5k) Prepare for the 34th annual Cape Cod 5K Championship (July 20th, 8 am). Start in front of the old Elementary School at West Bay Road, north to Wianno Ave, a right onto Wianno Ave; right onto Seaview Ave. As you turn right onto Parker Road, say good bye to the ocean views, but the beauty of the Wianno Golf Course awaits you. Mile 3 is at the intersection of Parker Road and West Bay Road; take a right onto West Bay Road for the last 1/10 th of a mile and finish right back where you started. This course is measured and certified by the USATF. CONT’D 14

  • 23. Fishing in and around Osterville FISHING Cape Cod is certainly considered a world-class fishing destination, and Osterville in particular offers anglers an incredible variety of landscapes. From the vast system of estuaries and inshore bays to open ocean beaches, anglers can catch trophy fish right from the shore, harbor jetties, a boat, a kayak and even a paddleboard. Here are some specific areas to try next time you decide to go fishing: Dowses Beach: In recent years, a nice handicap accessible pier was built at the east end of the parking lot at Dowses beach. From this platform, anglers can catch striped bass, bluefish and scup that are passing through the inlet that connects East Bay to Nantucket Sound. There are even cutting boards available to fillet your catch. On the open ocean side, you will find anglers spread out along the rock jetty that extends out into the ocean. Early mornings at first light is a great time to find some fish. The Bays: West Bay, North Bay and Prince’s Cove provide an amazing inshore fishery right in the backyard of Osterville. Striped bass prefer colder water, so during the months of May and October, you can find large fish close to home. You will see anglers cruising around in small skiffs, aluminum boats and kayaks. Smaller “schoolie” bass remain in the bays all summer and bluefish don’t mind the warmer summer water temperatures. CONT’D www.ostervillevillagelibrary.org 21
  • 24. Osterville Cut: During the fishing season (late April through October) you will find anglers on the rock jetty at the Osterville Cut (at the end of Sea View Ave.) on a daily basis. The current can be moving through the inlet at a rapid speed, so it is often best to use a weighted jig or some lure that will get down in the current. However, always keep FISHING your eyes out for breaking fish. Early mornings will often produce large schools of breaking striped bass that can be an incredible sight. Cast a popper into the mix and you’re almost certain to get a fish. My favorite “go to” popper is a white “smack it.” Words of Wisdom Here are a few pointers culled from my experience fishing around Osterville: Bluefish: By Memorial Day weekend, bluefish have usually arrived in large numbers. Your best shot is from any ocean facing beach such as Dowses, the beach at the end of Wianno Ave., the Osterville Cut jetty or Sampson’s Island. Casting surface poppers is usually all it takes to attract these toothy game fish. However, don’t forget a wire leader when chasing blues, as their sharp teeth can easily slice through your fishing line. If you have a boat, sometimes it’s as simple as driving out the Osterville Cut and looking for birds swarming over schools of fish. I often see breaking bluefish right in the channel. Bottom Fish and Southern Speedsters: In addition to striped bass and bluefish, the rocky shoals just outside the Osterville Cut, attract anglers from many states for the incredible supply of black sea bass and scup. These are great fish to target with kids and black sea bass is one of the best eating fares in town. In the fall, Osterville residents will notice a fleet of small boats racing around off the Wianno Club. They are chasing False Albacore, Bonito and Spanish Mackerel, all southern fish that arrive late summer when the water temps heat up. These fish are a favorite for anglers with fly rods and light tackle. They are tricky to catch, but provide an exciting fishery. 22
  • 25. FISHING GETTING STARTED Tackle Shops and Saltwater License: The best resource for advice on rods, reels, lures and bait is always your local tackle shops. Just minutes from Osterville are Powderhorn Outfitters on Barnstable Road and Sports Port on West Main Street, both in Hyannis. They will get you set up with the correct gear and provide tips on location, technique and provide you with up-to-date reports on when and where the fish are biting. In 2011 a new regulation was enacted that now requires anglers to have saltwater fishing licenses. Here is a quick recap of the rule: under 16 years of age, you are not required to have a license. Fishing on a properly licensed charter boat (see sidebar, page 24), you are not required to have a license. Over age 60, you are required to have a license, but there is no cost. Everyone else, $10 and you are good to go. However, while most tackle shops sell freshwater licenses; you will have to get your saltwater license by calling 866.703.1925 or online at www.mass.gov/dfwele/licensing/index.htm. GETTING OUT THERE Osterville Anglers Club: Established in 1988 by local Osterville businessmen, the OAC is now celebrating its 25th anniversary. Located in a beautiful waterfront facility in Crosby Yacht Basin, The OAC considers itself the Cape’s best family fishing club. It is truly a year-round club with winter seminars and workshops, social events and a schedule of tournaments throughout the summer. At a cost of $500 per year for a family membership, the OAC is also considered one of the Cape’s most affordable clubs. For information on the club, visit www.ostervilleanglersclub.com. Home-grown Proprietors COTé BROTHERS The Coté Brothers The late Robert Kennedy observed, “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.” And that is exactly what is happening in Osterville. Lifelong residents – brothers Nat and James Coté – are part of a new generation of committed business people and civic leaders who are carrying on the small-town traditions that make this community unique, while paving the way for new ones that will guarantee its continued success. Both of the Cotés were born and educated here. Nat, 35, then headed to Keene State University in New Hampshire, while baby brother James, 26, graduated from Gwynedd Mercy College in Pennsylvania. But both came back home to the place they’d always loved, and are now operating thriving businesses in the heart of the village. In November 2010, James took over ownership of Osterville House and Garden, where he had worked since his teens. Just a few short months later, in April of 2011, Nat bought what had long been the Osterville Cheese Shop, creating what is now Wianno Green Cafe, serving breakfast and lunch with a bird’s eye view of the village. Nat couldn’t be happier to be living and working in his hometown. “There’s something special about Osterville,” he says. “To be so close to the water, to have the ability to walk everywhere – these are just some of the things that make this place special, but mostly it’s the people. I love knowing all my customers – and getting to know new ones.” The Coté Brothers of Osterville: Nat (left) and James. 26

I love being able to help people solve their problems.” He is so drawn to helping his neighbors that he also chose to become a Barnstable Town Councilor, representing the village. “I really wanted to play a bigger role in the life of the village.” He is also a member of the Osterville Business and Professional Association, as well as the Osterville Village Association. James and his wife Megan also recently bought a home in the center of the village, ideally located for a quick commute to work. “I just love this village,” he said. “There’s just that small-town something about it that makes it special. • 32. Osterville: Gone to the Dogs GONE TO THE DOGS It’s a dog’s life ... if you’re lucky enough to be a dog living in Osterville, that is. While Osterville is renowned as a great walking village, it’s not just great for two-legged residents. Osterville is a dog-friendly community with plenty of parks, paths, sidewalks, and beaches (note that the latter are available for dog walking September 16th through May 14th) open to well-behaved, licensed, and properly restrained pooches. But perhaps what makes this place so special for our canine friends is the passion dog owners have for their companions. For many, Fido is not just an animal, but rather a part of the family and frequently can be found cruising the byways in (well-ventilated) autos and trotting down village avenues. One recent afternoon dog owner and Osterville resident Dick Weir walked into Osterville House and Garden to ask the proprietor a question, and Sheila, his four- year-old shih tzu tagged along beside him at the end of a fashionable leash. Sheila, a regular in the store – and in the village – received a round of howdy-dos from the staff. Weir delights that the village is so welcoming to his dog – and to her many canine friends. He knows all the shops (and there are many) that provide treats for dogs, and some that even place bowls of water outside the door for a passing pup. 791 Main Street Osterville www.crispflatbread.com 30 ExperienceOsterville_Crisp_quarterh.indd 1 2/20/13 5:32 PM

Sheila has gotten so used to receiving his treats that she now follows all postal trucks, hoping for a treat. Osterville formally acknowledges its love of dogs several times a year. The Annual Mutts and Martinis social, which will be held on the Village Green this year Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 5:30-7:30 PM, is a social for dogs and their owners. The former indulge in a little puppy socialization while the latter mix it up over hors d’oeuvres and martinis. Weir loves the event, but emphasizes that Sheila knows her limits. “Sheila can take about 20 minutes of socializing at Mutts and Martinis, and then it’s time to go home.” See our Event Calendar on page 40 for more details on this event. – Karyn Kuhn Celebrity Auction Lunch with Thomas Bradley, 3d Chairman of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Winner can invite up to 5 guests for lunch with Mr. Bradley at the Wianno Club on August 1, 2013. • 36. Osterville Fun Facts! Courtesy of the Osterville Historical Museum FUN FACTS Osterville has a rich and storied history. Here are just a few fun facts – perfect icebreakers for your next party: • Until the late 1980s, Osterville was the only place on Cape Cod to have direct long distance and international dialing without the need for telephone operator assistance. • Although Ralph and Martha Cahoon may make you think of Cotuit, they actually started their store on Main Street in Osterville by buying pre-made furniture at factories and then adding their artistic touch. Did you know that the Wianno Yacht Club was once at the end of Wianno Avenue? • Captain Kidd is reputed to have buried his treasure of gold coins on Grand Island (now known as Oyster Harbors) but he was never able to retrieve it as it was cursed by the woman he jilted known as Hannah Screecham. • The first bridge connecting Little Island to the mainland was not built until 1891. • In 1910, there were more than 5 large hotels in Osterville, including the Cotocheset House, the Crosby House, and East Bay Lodge. • In the first quarter of the twentieth century, there were as many as seven places in the Village to buy food including an A&P, the First National and Echo supermarkets, and specialty stores such as Williams meat market, Kalas’ fruit store, and E.E.C. Swift’s, which dates back to 1858 (now Fancy’s Market). 34
  • 37. Did you know that the Crosbys are America’s oldest boat-building family? FUN FACTS • Speaking of Swift’s, one of the Swift brothers went on to create a $250 million dollar meat packing empire in Chicago in the early 1900s, and he invented the refrigerated railroad car to transport his products. He learned his craft on his family’s Cape Cod farm and as the butcher at Swift’s in Osterville. • Until the area was settled by Europeans, Osterville was part of the “south sea lands” where Wampanoags came each summer to farm, fish and to enjoy the summer breezes. • While Osterville is well-known for its Crosby boats, Oliver Hinckley, whose yard was at the foot of Bay Street, built 23 vessels ranging from 53 to 160 tons between 1817 and 1845. • Route 28 used to run through the center of Osterville; from South County Road, down Main Street, across the Centerville Bridge.) Did you know that Osterville once had a working salt farm? For more fun facts about Osterville, visit the Osterville Historical Museum. Do you have a fun fact that we missed?
