Pinch Pots- why?
 Potters wheel has been around for only 4,000 years
 Pinch and coil construction prevailed
 Best way to interact with the clay
     Tactile sensitivity
     Tactile awareness
What Pinching can Produce
 Usually 6in in diameter
 Thick or thin
 Decorated in many ways
 Forms: Vessels, whistles, sculptural forms, pinch pot
    animals, etc
Physics!
 “An action will produce an equal and opposite
    reaction”
 Clay will move away from pressure
 How pressure is applied affects how clay responds
Pinching Tips
 Work in a spiral from bottom to top
 Use tip of thumb (interior) and support outside with
    other hand
 Can leave minor cracks for texture
 BUT! Deep cracks must be welded IMMEDIATELY
 Trim or untrimmed rims
 Smoothed or burnished
It really is simple! Just takes practice!
