skin care products, but first let’s look at all skin types so you can determine which category you fit into...
Four main skin types exist:
Normal skin
Oily skin
Dry skin
Combination skin
These skin types directly relate to the amount of oil produced by the skin. Your skin type does not change, unless
you experience a systemic change within your body that affects oil production.
All other skin characteristics are classified as skin conditions, of which you may have many. Your skin condition/s
can change quite regularly, as they too are influenced systemically but are also significantly influenced by your
external environment. Acneic/problematic skin, Sensitive skin and Mature skin are all skin conditions that are often
termed incorrectly as skin types. You will find further information on each of these in our Skin Conditions
Directory.

Oily Skin
People who have oily skin tend to be abusive towards it in an attempt to dry up the oiliness. By doing so they can
dehydrate their skin, at times severely, possibly leading to further problems associated with this skin type (i.e.
acne) and further sebum production as the skin stripped of oil will increase production in an attempt to rectify
what it considers a problem (the lack of oil).
A positive to oily skin, is that it tends to age slower than other skin types as the oil production protects the skin
from moisture loss.
Characteristics of an Oily skin:
Greasy feel to the skin
Even after cleansing, the skin may look and feel oily by mid-morning.
Pores are enlarged and quite noticeable.
Texture is coarse
Is generally a thicker skin with a sallow (yellowish) appearance
May look dull
Has a tendency to develop blemishes. (papules, pustules, blackheads, whiteheads)
Conditions an Oily skin may experience:
Acne/blemishes
Dehydration
Scarring and/or Pigmentation from acne
Flakiness (if dehydration is severe)

Daily under moisturizer (day or night)
Weekly under a mask or moisturizer
As a 'spot' treatment on blemished areas (day or night)
Lifestyle recommendations for an Oily skin
Eat a healthy, well balanced diet.
Maintain a moderate exercise routine.
Wear sunscreen daily on top of your moisturizer.
Limit UV exposure
Do not pick or squeeze blemishes.
If using spot treatments on blemishes ensure you use them only on the blemish as using them all over can
dehydrate the skin and exacerbate the problem.
Change pillow cases very regularly.
Always use a freshly laundered face cloth, clean cotton pads or facial sponges when performing your facial
regime to avoid spreading bacteria.
Dry Skin
Many people use the term dry to explain dehydration of the skin. In Beauty Therapy when we talk about a dry skin
we are referring to a skin that lacks adequate production of sebum (Alipidic).
It is also important to understand that a skin that was perhaps oily in the past, with age, can become a dry skin as
sebum production slows down with age. With this in mind you must not just take the size of the pores into
consideration (as pores do not shrink in size as sebum production slows) but consider all other characteristics.
Characteristics of a Dry skin:
Lacking in adequate sebum production, though a slight shine may appear by late afternoon to evening on
some areas of the skin.
Pores are barely visible, unless the skin was previously oily.
