1. Evaluation 1
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
2. This shot is a perfect example of what a media company would be looking for while
working with this type of genre in music as well as it wonderfully illustrate what
you would expect in a dubstep video.
Secondly the next shot shows the link between the lyrics and the visual
representation of what the shot is trying to show. (“you want me to come over I
got an excuse”) In the shot we see the two characters sitting down and playing
video games (that’s the excuse)
3. The next shots portrays the aggressiveness of the dubstep genre, as we can see that both of the
characters start to get aggressive at each other just from playing the game, however this is done
by more of the means of action than In the lyrics we can see this through the build up of the
characters rage and anger as we can start to see one of the characters go a bit out of control and
attacking his friend after catching him cheating.
At the beginning of the video, after we are dived into the game, we see the two side characters
being introduced, the way they are introduced is quite similar to how the characters of the
games Tekken and Mortal Kombat are introduced(which is walking in with some dialogue or
making some motion of defeating the adversary) this is a great example of intertextual reference.
4. During my time filming my music video I had the opportunity to work with different types of experimental camera
angles and shots, which allowed me to pick the out the very best of my angles, the next images are those shots that
I think are some of the best shots In my video, for example, the close up on the hand shows the aggressive and
eagerness to win, the extreme close ups of the eyes creates tension between the two characters and finally the final
shot represents the pain that both characters have to face in order to win.
The next image illustrate the different lighting that I had to work with while filming this video, however there where
different lights I had to work with while filming this video, this shows the difference in working outside and inside
buildings while filming, as for most part of the video we see the characters inside playing videogames I had the
chance to play a little with the lights while filming inside which allowed me to get more that two different types of
shade and light, this was to create the shape of a silhouette, which creates bigger tension between the two fighting
characters.
5. In the next pair of shots we can see the Mise-en-scene that I used for my video, at
the beginning of the video (0.35 mins) we can see the character of the game that
main characters are playing, we can see that its supposed to be a videogame by
the appearances given by these two characters. Such as wearing dramatic looking
clothes or in a sense look more menacing. However the main character's are
dressed as you would expect others to be, in other words comfortable and easy to
move in. This is also a good example of Mise-en-scene.
6. There is quite a close similarity between one of the scenes I my video in and that of Switch
(Firebeatz & Schella) the shots are similar as we can see both “players” looking threatening.
Another similarity is in the music video “first
of the year (Equinox)” the similarity is due to
the start of the videos, as in both start with a
rising shot, in the case of my video we see a
rising shot of a sofa with 2 people sitting on it,
in the case for First of the year it’s a rising
shot of a man holding a sweet.
7. Here is another link between the lyrics and the video, once again the image comes
from the music video “First of the year” in the lyrics (pretty much the only lyrics)
the little girl screams “call 911 now!” as she is literally holding an old telephone.
This is similar to our video due to the fact that the lyrics make sense with the video
Above there is a visual representation of a video, the image is from the music video
koala by Oliver Heldens, in the image we see… a Koala, if that is not a visual
representation I don’t know what is, while in my video we see quite a few kicks
here and there.
8. This image was taken from Martin Garrix’s music video for animals, In the shot we
see the artist after taking off his mask and after setting a car alight, this image I
believe is to represent that some times humans are no better than animals, this
image is also quite similar to my video due to the fact that the main characters are
not revealed till the very end of the video, this is also a medium close up.
The second image was also taken from a video of Martin Garrix (Wizard) however
in this case its different, in the image we see the artist in front of a huge crowd,
this is supposed to represent what DJ’s do for a living. (he does look like a wizard
with all the colours and the flashing lights) this is also representing the artist.
9. Here’s a scene from the music video “bonfire” made by knife party, in the scene we
see a boy being bullied for studying, this scene is quite similar to one of the scenes
in my music video where the 2 main characters are fighting over cheating. The
scene is similar In the fact that the aggressors are not in the shot creating a violent
portrait of the weaker person.
The image below is from the video “melancholy hill” by Gorillaz, this is a good
example of a close up which is also quite similar to one of the images in my video.
The close up creates a sense of mystery as the audience don’t exactly know who is
behind the hood/mask.
10. Finally there's a similar shot in “choosing you” made by Foreign beggars, in the
shot we see a child's face, however in this shot the camera tilts upwards until we
can only see the child's eyes and nose, its quite similar to one of the shots of my
music video where we only see the characters eyes, I believe this shot is to create a
sense of mystery within the child since at the begging of the video we only see the
child's face.
