NATURAL RESOURCES
Our Health Spa Resorts have attracted visitors for centuries who have sought the healing benefits of our therapeutic natural
resources. These natural resources differ from country to country:
HUNGARY – Due to the thinness of the earth’s crust in the Carpathian basin, Hungary
is blessed with more than two thousand natural thermal mineral springs and wells
producing thermal water. The heat and chemical composition of these thermal
waters have a direct healing effect on many mobility conditions such as arthritis and
rheumatism. Mud from the unique thermal lake of Hévíz is also used in the form of
packs, due to its anti-inflammatory and healing qualities.
(See Balneotherapy: Thermal Bath, Packs: Mud Pack)
ˇˇ
PIESTANY (SLOVAKIA) – Piest’any spa has been treating and preventing degenerative
ˇ
and chronic inflammatory locomotive disorders for well over a century now. Piest’any
ˇ
spa also works to treat nervous system and post injury conditions using proven
methods to stimulate the body to achieve rapid pain reduction and early healing.
Thermal water naturally springs forth from 2000 meter deep tectonic disruptions.
Its temperature ranges from 67-69 °C at its source. These waters are mildly mineral,
sulphid-hydrogen-carbonate, calcific, sodium disulfid and hypotonic. This thermal

water and its natural mud are recognized for their healing effect on many mobility
disorders and other ailments. The water is directly pumped into thermal baths or
individual tubs where is used for treatment. (See Balneotherapy: Thermal Bath,
Individual Thermal Mineral Bath, Individual Thermal Aroma Bath, Carbon Dioxide Thermal
Bath, Individual Thermal Bubble Bath)
The mud is either applied to the body in the form of packs, or alternatively, built
directly over the hot mud springs are three different spa houses – Irma, Napoleon
and Pro Patria which offer unique indoor mud pools. (See Packs: Mud Pack, See Balneo-
therapy: Mud Pool)
SMRDÁKY (SLOVAKIA) – The thermal water content in this spa resort has a high
sulfur content, making it not just effective in the treatment of mobility disorders,
but certain skin conditions as well such as eczema and psoriasis. (See Balneo-
therapy: Thermal Bath)
Pies t’any – Slovakia
ˇ
MARIENBAD (CZECH REPUBLIC) – More than 100 ‘cold water’ springs rise up
within the vicinity of Marienbad most of them differing in their chemical composi-
tion. When drunk these waters have healing effects on many different disorders of
digestion, liver, kidney and the urinary tract. Specific springs have their particular
benefits, which is why this drinking treatment is prescribed by a doctor. The water
is also used for inhalation therapies and mineral baths. (See Balneotherapy: Mineral
Drinking Cure) Also naturally seeping through the earth’s surface in Marienbad is
it’s famous natural gas from the Marie Spring. This gas is combined with the miner-
al water and experienced in the form of a bath, (See Balneotherapy: Individual
Mineral Bath) or alternatively is pumped into a ‘dry gas bag’ around the body, result-
ing in a treatment excellent for circulation disorders, lowering blood pressure and
even the improvement of sexual functions. (See Balneotherapy: Natural Dry Carbon
Gas Bath) When injected into certain areas such as the spine or joints it reduces
Marienbad – Czech Republic
pain and speeds up the natural healing processes. (See Balneotherapy: Natural Gas
Injections) Peat is used in Marienbad in the form of a peat wrap for treating mobili-
ty disorders and as a gynecologic treatment for many conditions including sterility
due to its healing and anti-inflammatory effects. (See Packs: Peat Pack, Gynecologic
Mud/Peat Treatment)
SOVATA (ROMANIA) – The Bear salt lake of Sovata and its salt water are used as a
basis for the treatments in Sovata. This salt water has a curative effect on mobility
disorders, some skin conditions and is also used for inhalation treatments.
(See Balneotherapy: Salt Bath, Individual Salt Bath)
Mud from the lake with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties is used
as a treatment both for mobility disorders and as a gynecologic treatment. In fact
its results for sterility in women have been so successful that the spa has a long-
standing reputation for success in this field. (See Packs: Peat Pack, Gynecologic

5. BALNEOTHERAPY
BALNEOTHERAPY • THERMAL MINERAL WATER
THERMAL BATH
Rich in minerals and warmed by the heat of the earth’s interior, thermal mineral water
is probably one of the most remarkable natural remedies known to mankind. Thermal
water is the basis of our natural treatments in Hungary and Slovakia. It is particularly
effective in the treatment of chronic inflammatory and degenerative locomotive dis-
orders and is also excellent in rehabilitation programs. Relaxing in the warm water is
also a perfect antidote to unwinding from the stresses and strains of modern life. In
fact its effect is so good that a weekly visit to the local spa is routine for many people
living in central Europe. Thermal water naturally springs up, or is pumped artificially to
the earth’s surface, normally from a depth of about 2000 meters. After this it then cools
to a temperature suitable for bathing which is usually between 36-39 °C. You are
encouraged to relax in the thermal bath for 15-20 mins daily unless otherwise advised
by one of our doctors. In some of our more traditional spas, your thermal bathing treat-
ment will be completed by a 15 minute full body dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap). Some
of our older thermal bathhouses are true architectural gems, whilst our newer facilities
combine the thermal water with sauna worlds, swimming and hydro pools.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Relaxing, Well Being
INDIVIDUAL THERMAL MINERAL BATH
The individual thermal mineral bath is a bath of natural thermal water administered
privately in a single tub. This treatment is especially popular in our spa resort of Piest’any.
ˇ
The water in the bath is normally between 36 and 38 °C (and in exceptional cases
40 °C). The treatment lasts 20 minutes and in some resorts is followed by a 15 minute full
body dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap). During the treatment the heat from the thermal
water helps the blood vessels dilate reducing blood pressure and relaxes the muscles,
additionally the sulfur and minerals from the thermal water are also absorbed through
the skin, where they inhibit the degradation of elastine and collagen in the cartilages,
sinews and connective tissues. The individual thermal bath is an effective treatment if
you have a mobility condition or alternatively if you are looking to relax and unwind.
Because of this we also prescribe this treatment for our guests who may be suffering
from stress or anxiety.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
INDIVIDUAL THERMAL AROMABATH
Administered privately in an individual bath. Our thermal water aromabath is a popular treatment in our spa resort of Piest’any.
ˇ
The procedure is identical to the normal individual thermal bath (See: Individual Thermal Mineral Bath), in that temperature is
between 36 and 38 °C and lasts for 20 minutes. It is unique however because herbal extracts are added to the thermal water
to create a variety of effects. Amongst others these include: Lavender for relaxation, Camomile for its healing effects on the
skin, Lemon Balm a mild sedative and Nettle for skin rejuvenation. Not only is there a relaxing effect from the thermal water
but also the benefit from the herbal extracts.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Relaxing, general Well Being
CARBON DIOXIDE THERMAL BATH
The carbon dioxide thermal bath is an individual bath of thermal water at a temperature
of between 32-34 °C into which is pumped small ‘fizzy’ bubbles of carbon dioxide gas.
The treatment lasts 20 minutes during which the small carbon bubbles fizz and coat
the skin as the gas is absorbed into the body. This strongly congests the skin with carbon
dioxide, thereby slowing down heart activity as well as reducing blood pressure and
stress on the heart. The treatment is ideal for general relaxation as there is a pleasant
soothing feeling of general tickling from the carbon bubbles. Also during the treatment
the heat from the thermal water helps the blood vessels dilate reducing blood pressure
and relaxing the muscles. Additionally the sulfur and minerals from the thermal water
are also absorbed through the skin where they inhibit the degradation of elastine and
collagen in the cartilages, tendons and connective tissues. The carbon gas combined
with the thermal water therefore has this ‘double’ effect. The treatment in some of our
spa locations is followed by a full body 15 minute dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap).
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, general Well Being
INDIVIDUAL THERMAL BUBBLE BATH
Similar in procedure to the carbon dioxide bath (See Hydrotherapy: Carbon Dioxide Bath) the individual thermal bubble bath is
a bath of thermal water at a temperature of between 32-34 °C into which is pumped small ‘fizzy’ bubbles of normal air (as
opposed to CO2). The treatment lasts 15-20 minutes during which you lie relaxing as small air bubbles relaxingly caress and coat
the skin. The treatment is ideal for general relaxation as there is a pleasant soothing feeling of general tickling from the bubbles.
During the treatment the heat from the thermal water helps the blood vessels dilate reducing blood pressure and relaxing the
muscles. The treatment in some of our spa locations is followed by a full body 15 minute dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap).
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being

6. BALNEOTHERAPY • THERMAL MINERAL WATER / cont.
MUD POOL
Unique to our Health Spa Resort of Piest’any is the mud pool treatment. This is available
ˇ
in three of our spas on the spa island – Pro Patria, Irma and Napoleon Health Spas.
The mud pool is comprised of a natural bed of sulfur mud from between 10-30 cm thick,
penetrated by hot thermal mineral water springs, the water level above the mud being
from between 50-90 cm. The temperature of the mineral water varies from 39-40 °C, in
places directly over the springs sometimes reaching higher levels. During the treat-
ment the heat from the mud and thermal water helps the blood vessels dilate reducing
blood pressure and relaxing the muscles, additionally the sulfur and minerals are also
absorbed through the skin, where they inhibit the degradation of elastine and collagen
in the cartilages, sinews and connective tissues. It is possible to stand, slowly walk, sit
or even conduct gentle joint mobility exercises whilst in the pool. The duration of the
bath is strictly individual lasting between 5-10 minutes. The treatment ends with a
shower and a 15 minute dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap). As part of the Piest’any tradition
ˇ
this treatment can be combined with a thermal bath and massage.
Time: 5-10 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
BALNEOTHERAPY • MINERAL WATER AND NATURAL GAS
MINERAL DRINKING CURE
Drinking medicinal mineral water is an important part of your spa stay. The rich mineral
waters gently regulate the functioning of the stomach, bowels, kidneys and liver.
A drinking treatment normally consists of drinking a prescribed amount of the mineral
before meals as this increases the efficiency of the mineral substances and their
absorption into the body. Each particular fountain in our different spa resorts in Hungary,
Czech Republic and Slovakia have their own unique benefits and advantages. Instruc-
tions on how to take full advantage of this natural resource will be found in the spa.
Generally it is advised to drink between 1 and 2 decilitres before meals.
Our Health Spa Resort of Marienbad was built around the healing effects of its medicinal drinking springs, world famous for
it’s curative effects on kidney and urinary tract conditions. There are seven different mineral water springs in Marienbad,
each with their own particular benefits and healing mineral components. Because of this, combined with the importance of
embarking upon the correct drinking regime, your spa doctor will advise you on which spring will best benefit your health condition.
In Marienbad you will normally be prescribed to drink from between 1 to 2 liters per day.
Doctor’s prescription required: No, but advised in certain locations, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
INDIVIDUAL MINERAL BATH
This is a signature treatment, exclusively provided in the spa resort of Marienbad using
the natural local mineral waters and natural CO2 gas that naturally seeps out from the
ground. The water is heated to a temperature of between 28-34 °C in an individual
bathtub, into which is pumped the natural CO2 gas that fizzes onto the skin, producing
a relaxing, tickling sensation. The carbon dioxide is absorbed through the skin into the
body, where slows down the heart activity and reduces the blood pressure. Several
treatments will result in improved blood circulation, heart and kidney activity as well as
reduced stress and anxiety. The benefits and procedures are similar to the carbon
dioxide bath treatment (See Hydrotherapy: Carbon Dioxide Bath), however the advantage
here is that all the properties used are both local and natural.
Time: 20 minutes + full body dry wrap (15 minutes)
Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
INDIVIDUAL MINERAL AROMABATH
Identical to the individual mineral bath treatment (See: Individual Mineral Bath) and
exclusively provided in the spa resort of Marienbad, the difference here is that herbal
extracts or salts are added to the water. The herbal extracts used include: Nettle,
which softens the skin and can help eczema conditions, Camomile, that is anti-inflam-
matory and speeds up the healing of wounds, Horsetail Plant, for backaches and aching
joints and Tannin combined with Oak Bark to sooth skin irritations. Dead Sea Salts can
also be combined with the mineral bath which not only have anti-inflammatory and anti-
allergic effects but also help improve the flexibility and elasticity of the skin.
Time: 20 minutes + dry wrap (15 minutes)
Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
NATURAL DRY CARBON GAS BATH
This is another signature treatment of the spa resort of Marienbad where the gas
– ‘Marie’s gas’ – that bubbles naturally out of the ground is used for the treatment.
This gas is of volcanic origin and contains 99.7 % CO2. In our other resorts normal, com-
mercial CO2 gas (the same as in the food industry) is used. During the treatment you lie
fully clothed, comfortably on a bed enclosed in a large plastic bag that is sealed just
under the arms. The gas is then pumped into the bag, which slowly inflates, where it is
absorbed through the clothes and skin into the body where it slows down heart activity
and reduces blood pressure. The gas also improves blood circulation and kidney activity
and has an anti-inflammatory effect. The gas is also known to stimulate the production
of the sexual hormones, testosterone and estradiol, which is why it is successful for
the improvement of sexual functions and to relieve menopausal symptoms in women.
Time: 30 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
30
7. CO2 NATURAL GAS INJECTIONS
Specific to the spa resort of Marienbad, these injections are an application of the famous ‘Marie’s gas‘ that bubbles naturally
out from the ground. The application of this gas to the subcutis in the area of the large joints and spine produces many
remarkable effects including pain relief, improvement in blood circulation to the area and an acceleration of healing.
Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
BALNEOTHERAPY • SALT
SALT BATH
Our salt bath is a signature treatment in our Health Spa Resort of Sovata, Romania.
The water is pumped from a natural salt pond – the Bear Lake that lies just below the spa.
Because of its extreme salt content and the floating effect it has on the body, the Bear
Lake is often referred to as the ‘dead sea’ of Transylvania. In summer the salt traps the
heat, maintaining its temperature a pleasant 30 °C making it a wonderful relaxing,
floating outdoor spa treatment. This water is renowned for its healing effects for mobilit dis-
orders, skin diseases and some gynecology conditions. It is also an effective relaxation therapy.
Time: 15-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Relaxing, general Well Being
INDIVIDUAL SALT BATH
Our individual salt bath is a signature treatment in our Health Spa Resort of Sovata,
Romania. The water is pumped from a natural salt pond – the Bear Lake that lies just
below the spa. Because of its extreme salt content and the floating effect it has on the
body, the Bear Lake is often referred to as the ‘dead sea’ of Transylvania (See: Salt
Bath). In the spa itself this water is heated to between 32-36 °C and pumped into indi-
vidual salt baths. Here the bathing time is between 15-20 minutes. The treatment is
considered an effective therapy for chronic rheumatic and nervous system disorders,
some chronic skin complaints and even gynecological problems. Because of the high
salt content in the water, your body floats easily, making it feel light and relaxed – an
effective de-stress experience.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being

If you are staying with us on a traditional or therapeutic spa package you will, upon
arrival, be booked in for a check up with one of our spa doctors. The aim of this initial
consultation is to check that the treatments prescribed are safe and effective for your
health and to discuss in detail your particular condition. If necessary the doctor may
prescribe additional examinations and/or laboratory tests.
DOCTOR’S CONTROL
If you are staying with us for one week or longer on a traditional or therapeutic spa
stay, it is likely that you will receive a weekly control check up with one of our spa doctors.
The purpose of this consultation is to ensure that your treatment plan is having the
best results possible and that you are getting the best out of our spa services. In some
cases the treatment plan might be adjusted and additional treatments advised,
depending on your progress.
FINAL DOCTOR’S CHECK UP
At the end of your stay our spa doctors will conduct a final consultation to ensure that
the treatments prescribed have gone according to plan. This is also an opportunity for

8. HYDROTHERAPY
CARBON DIOXIDE BATH (IN NORMAL WATER)
The carbon dioxide bath is an individual bath of normal water at a temperature of
between 32-34 °C into which is pumped small ‘fizzy’ bubbles of carbon dioxide gas.
The same carbon dioxide used in the food industry is pumped into the water through a
tube. In our spa resort of Marienbad, natural gas is used, making this a signature treatment
(See Balneotherapy: Individual Mineral Bath). The treatment can last from between
10 to 20 minutes during which you will lie relaxing as small carbon bubbles caress and
coat your skin as the gas is absorbed into the body. Medically the carbon strongly
congests the skin with carbon dioxide, thereby slowing down heart activity, reducing
blood pressure and stress on the heart and improved blood circulation. This treatment
is ideal for general relaxation as there is a pleasant soothing feeling of general tickling
from the carbon bubbles. The treatment in some of our spa locations is followed by a
full body 15 minute dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap).
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic, general Well Being
HYDROMASSAGE
This treatment is taken in a hot bath of 35-37 °C and using the currents of whirling
water gives a relaxing massage. The effects are improved blood circulation and a
release of muscle and joint stiffness. Aroma oils and essences can be added to the
water to enhance the experience. The treatment can last from between 10-20 minutes.
Time: 10-20 minutes
Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
UNDERWATER JET MASSAGE
The treatment is given in a bath of 35-37 °C. A powerful, pressurized jet of water is
released through a hose under the water and directed manually by the therapist to the
main muscle groups from a distance of between 10 and 15 cm and at an angle, in
strokes. By varying the distance and angle it is possible to change the intensity of the
water jet pressure upon the body. The aim of this deep massage is to release stiffness
in the muscles and connective tissues and to partially release the joints. It also is
probably one of the most effective relaxing spa treatments available.
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
INDIVIDUAL BUBBLE BATH
The individual bubble bath is similar to the individual thermal bubble bath (See Balneotherapy: Individual Thermal Bubble Bath),
however, instead of using thermal water, ordinary water is used that has been heated to a temperature of between 32-34 °C.
Into this is pumped small ‘fizzy’ bubbles of air. The treatment lasts from between 10 to 20 minutes during which you lie relaxing
as small air bubbles relaxingly caress and coat the skin. The treatment is ideal for general relaxation as there is a pleasant
soothing feeling of general tickling from the bubbles. The treatment in some of our spa locations is followed by a full body
15 minute dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap).
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
UNDERWATER TRACTION (IN NORMAL WATER)
Underwater traction in normal water uses exactly the same procedures as in thermal underwater traction. (See: Underwater
Traction in Thermal Water). The only difference being that normal water is used. Traction therapy is a passive procedure that
uses a mechanical force to induce stretching of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons, joint capsule), the pulling force
during the traction being constant and continuous. Traction in water uses the weight of the body which is suspended by the
neck or below the arms in a pool of warm water. Sometimes additional weights are added to the middle or feet to increase the
stretching effect. In the treatment the body is gently stretched out which releases the muscles and stiff spinal connective tissues.
The treatment is supervised by a professional therapist.
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic, Relaxing
UNDERWATER TRACTION (IN THERMAL WATER)
Traction therapy is a passive procedure that uses mechanical force to induce stretching
of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, sinews, joint capsule), the pulling force during
the traction being constant and continuous. Traction in water uses the weight of the
body which is suspended by the neck or below the arms in a special pool of warm thermal
water. Sometimes additional weights are added to the middle or feet to increase the
stretching effect. During treatment the body is gently stretched out releasing the mus-
cles and stiff spinal connective tissues. The treatment is supervised by a professional
therapist and lasts for 15 minutes. Underwater traction in thermal water has the double
benefit of the traction and also the healing effects of the minerals and heat from the
thermal water. In this case the sulfur and minerals are absorbed through the skin after
which they migrate to other structures in the body such as ligaments, cartilages and
sinews. The sulfur once it is in the body inhibits the degradation of elastine and collagen.
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic
32
9. COLON HYDROTHERAPY
Also known as Colonic Irrigation this practice was reputedly used in Ancient Egypt, China and India. However the method common
in the West today has its origins in 19th century European Spas. The treatment is conducted lying down, whilst warm purified
water is introduced into the colon via the rectum. Once this is completed the therapist uses special massage techniques to
stimulate the release of the water. The whole process takes between 30-45 minutes and has the effect of cleansing the bowels
from built up toxins, bacteria, parasites and other unwanted substances.
Time: 30-45 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
HYDROTHERAPY • KNEIPP TREATMENTS
Kneipp treatments are named after Sebastian Kneipp, a German priest who lived in the
19th century. Through a program of exposing his body to alternate temperatures of
hot and cold water, exercise and a healthy diet of vegetables, herbs and fresh bakery
products, he managed to cure himself from a serious illness. It is this alternation of hot
and cold water on certain body parts and hosing down with jets that people associate
the principle of the Kneipp treatments. However certain Danubius Health Spas offer,
not only the water treatments, but full Kneipp programs, which combine these water
treatments with herbal dry wraps, aroma baths a special healthy diet and exercise
programs such as Tai Chi and yoga (See Fitness: Exercise Classes). These programs last
between 2-3 weeks.
ALTERNATING TEMPERATURE BATH
This treatment is similar in principal to the stepping bath (See: Stepping Bath) and is
based on the Kneipp principle of hot and cold water on the body. The difference
between the two treatments is in the stepping bath, you would physically step into
baths of alternating temperatures whereas with our alternating temperature bath you
sit comfortably with your feet in a basin whilst a gentle jet of water is sprayed onto the
feet at a warm temperature with intervals of cold. This procedure is repeated for the
wrists and hands, in the arm bath with water. This treatment improves the immune
system, circulation and metabolism and leaves a rejuvenating feeling.
Time: 10 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
ALTERNATING TEMPERATURE POURING
Like ‘Scottish spray’ (See: Scottish Spray) this ‘pouring’ treatment is based on the
Kneipp principle of contrasting hot and cold water upon the body. Whilst standing
either naked or in a swim suit, a hose of warm water is gently directed over the body,
first on the front and then on the back at a temperature of 38-40 °C. The temperature
is then lowered to 16-18 °C and the action is repeated as before – first on the front of
the body and then on the back. This combination of ‘pourings’ is repeated five or six
times, finishing with cold water. This treatment improves the immune system, circu-
lation and metabolism and leaves a rejuvenating feeling.
Time: 10 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
SCOTTISH SPRAY
‘Scottish spray’ is a stimulating and extremely vigorous treatment. Whilst standing in a
swimsuit or naked a pressurized jet of water (3 atm) is applied from a 3 to 4 meter dis-
tance. For the first 30 seconds the temperature set at 38-40 °C followed by a spray of
16-18 °C for 5-10 seconds. This procedure is repeated several times first in the area of
the upper and lower extremities, then on the torso and belly, following the course
of the large intestine, from the front and back. The treatment ends with a cold spray.
This treatment improves the immune system, circulation and metabolism and leaves
a rejuvenating feeling.
Time: 15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
STEPPING BATH
This treatment involves stepping alternately into footbaths that are filled with water
of contrasting temperatures. Firstly your feet are placed into a footbath of water
between 40-50 °C, actively stepping for one to two minutes, then into a cold, water
footbath of a temperature between 10-16 °C again actively stepping for 15-30 seconds.
This whole cycle is repeated between 6 and 10 times, always finishing in the cold
footbath. This treatment has a positive impact on headaches, migraines, circulation
disorders (cold feet) and varicose veins in the early stage. It also helps improve the
condition of loosening ankles, leg joints and is a suitable treatment for traumas to
the feet and lower limbs.

10. PHYSIOTHERAPY
REHABILITATION DIAGNOSTICS
This diagnostic session is carried out for cases involving more complicated locomotive
dissorders and is offered mainly in our Health Spa Resort of Piest’any. Its purpose is to
ˇ
make special evaluations of the body’s functional capabilities. These evaluations may
include a muscle test, walking test, diagnostics of neurological, mobility, communica-
tion abilities and a spine check up. There also may be further specialized tests i.e. for
Parkinson’s, paralysis of the facial nerve etc. The diagnostic session registers the
status of the tested capabilities of in the beginning of the stay and the subsequent
development throughout the course of the Balneotherapy rehabilitation therapy.
A professional physiotherapist conducts this diagnostic procedure.
Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic/Rehabilitation
GROUP THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE
Therapeutic exercise is a crucial part of the recovery process and instrumental to any
rehabilitation program. This therapy is lead by an expert physiotherapist, normally for
a group of guests with a similar diagnostic profile. An example of our classes includes
therapeutic exercise for spine or joint conditions, Osteoporosis, Obesity, Vascular con-
ditions of the brain and exercise for Cardiac patients. The therapy uses exercises
designed to relax overloaded muscles, strengthen weak muscle groups, improve mobi-
lization of the joints and pelvis and strengthen static/dynamic functions necessary for
correct body positioning. An inseparable part of these classes are breathing exercises in
addition to training for speed, agility, endurance, balance, strength and overall fitness.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
INDIVIDUAL THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE
A qualified physiotherapist conducts all individual therapeutic exercise sessions.
These classes are designed to maintain or restore physical mobility capacities as well as
to develop functional capabilities. The therapy includes active and passive movements
as well as mobilization and manipulation. Other methods may include visualization,
active muscle contraction, active assisted movements and free active movement.
An inseparable part of these classes are breathing exercises in addition to training for
balance, strength and flexibility.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
FULL BODY/PARTIAL MEDICAL MASSAGE
Performed by qualified masseurs, the medical massage, sometimes referred to as the
‘classical’ massage, uses a variety of techniques during the treatment. The massage
generally targets areas where secondary changes have occurred as a result of a reaction
to injury somewhere in the body. Its aim is to speed up the recovery process by improving
circulation to the problematic area. As well as improving blood flow to the targeted
region, it can relax or stimulate muscles and mitigate pain. The massage is normally
conducted in the following areas: back, arms, lower extremities, stomach, chest and
neck. Depending on which areas are targeted this is either referred to as ‘partial’ or
‘full body’ massage.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic
SEGMENT AND CONNECTIVE TISSUE MASSAGE
This uses a very specialized massage technique, targeting the nerve connections and
endings. The massage is carried out in one of four areas, the head and neck, the back,
the chest or the pelvis. Using the thumb and forefinger the masseur presses firmly
along short or long, direct or curved lines. This massage action is very particular and
not only promotes healing in the area being massaged, but through a ‘reflex’ effect
promotes healing in all of the body, this is why it is sometimes referred to as ‘reflex’
massage. In addition it has been found to be very effective in relieving stress, fatigue,
sleep and digestive disorders and high blood pressure. The massage is a very sensitive
body intervention that can have certain unexpected side effects such as, short breath,
stomach pain, lowering of blood pressure and sudden fatigue. As a result prescription
is given with care and under the guidance of a doctor.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
FOOT REFLEX MASSAGE
The main principal of reflexology is based on the fact that in the human body there
are more than seventy thousand nerve terminals in the foot. These nerve terminals
connect to internal and external organs throughout the body through energy channels.
This massage specifically targets the hands and feet, stimulating the nerve endings
to produce a general healing effect. In particular it has a positive ‘reflex’ effect on
the blood circulatory and lymphatic systems, the immune system and regulates the
functioning of the endocrine glands. The massage also has relaxing and pain-alleviation
effects particularly effective for back pain and headaches. It also can help in cases of
anxiety, insomnia and disorders of the digestive system.
Time: 20-50 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being

11. MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE
This is a specialized massage the aim of which is to assist the lymphatic system, particu-
larly in cases where there is or has been a malfunction. The massage involves light
rhythmical movements of the hand that is applied to the lymph nodes and the lymphatic
system. It is this action that stimulates the lymph node activity to cleanse the body and
helps the flow of lymphatic fluid to remove toxins, debris, cell waste and dead particles.
The massage is usually divided into extremities of the body, each extremity generally
taking half an hour to massage.
Time: 20-30 minutes per extremity, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic
WATER REHABILITATION
Water rehabilitation, perhaps better known as ‘physiotherapy in water’ or ‘hydrokinesis-
therapy’ is conducted in water at a temperature of approximately 33 °C. In most of our
spas the water used will be natural thermal water and the exercises lead by a qualified
physiotherapist. Because of the buoyancy, resistance and chemical effects of the water,
it is very effective for persons with degenerative diseases of weight carrying joints and
conditions of the spine. Water rehabilitation is either conducted in groups with guests
of a similar diagnostic profile or even individually.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations, Benefits: Therapeutic
REHABILITATION PATH
The rehabilitation path is a specially designed outdoor path, used for rehabilitation pur-
poses to assist in improving the walking and balance capabilities of the body. The path
consists of rails to assist as well as a series of obstacles and different natural terrains
such as slopes and uneven surfaces. The class is supervised by a skilled physiotherapist,
who guides and directs the client through appropriate sections of the path, the aim
being to improve the nerve/muscle function abilities, general mobility and walking skills.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No, Benefits: Therapeutic
ERGO-THERAPY
Ergo-therapy is a specified type of rehabilitation designed to improve the functional
ability of the body for day-to-day activities with the aim of improving self-reliance and
independence. According to the type of condition of the client, ergo-therapy exercises
mainly focus on the hands and arms, ankles, and also the neck, head, chest and spine.
Sometimes the disorders are connected to problems with mental, cognitive functions
and speech. In such cases it necessary for cooperation between the ergo-therapy,
psychologist and speech therapist.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
MANIPULATION AND MOBILIZATION THERAPY
This is a manual technique used for the treatment of joint ‘blocks’ that cause pain and
restrict movement that may also cause reflex changes such as aches and spasms.
In most cases these are in the so-called ‘joint’ sections of the spine. The purpose of the
treatment is the release of the segment and the restoration of joint freedom. Firstly an
overstress is given to the problem area and then the ‘block’ is released through a fast
small movement with mild force. This technique is continued using short repetitive
movements, starting from a marginal to neutral position, without impact but perma-
nent overstress. This results in a mitigation of the ‘block’ or even in direct elimination.
This manipulation has to be carried out by a doctor specially trained and licensed.
Mobilization techniques on the other hand, such as slower muscle pulling and release,
stretching etc are normally carried out by a qualified physiotherapist.
Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
TRACTION
Traction therapy is a passive procedure that uses mechanical force to induce stretching
of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, sinews, joint capsules). This pulling force during
the traction treatment is constant and continuous or intermittent. In dry traction the
physiotherapist can position the client (by hand, belts or sand bags) specifically to target
and/or isolate the joint or part of the body that needs attention. The mechanical
traction is carried out using a bed on which the angle can be adjusted and a T bar with
weights to utilize the effects of gravity. In some places, the treatment is carried out on
electronic traction beds. Generally, the procedure lasts 20 minutes and has to be pre-
scribed by a doctor who specifies the type, intensity and location of the traction.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
ULTRASOUND THERAPY
Ultrasound uses sound of high frequency and intensity that are converted to mechanical
and heat energy. 30 % of this mechanical energy results in a type of micro-massage
in the tissues of the body that are targeted, resulting in heat. The treatment is admi-
nistered by placing the head of the device in continuous or pulse application into the
skin that has been given a coating of paraffin oil or conductive gel. The depth of impact
varies between 2-6 cm and the effect stimulates the molecules causing subsequent
chemical reactions. It also improves blood circulation as well as nutrition of the tissues
with an analgesic and antispastic effect. The site of application needs to be prescribed
by a doctor, but it is generally an area that is in pain or in need of relief.
Time: 15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic

12. PHYSIOTHERAPY / cont.
ANTISPASTIC KINEZITHERAPY
This therapy is carried out using a special electronically controlled device. It has a special anti-spasm function and takes advan-
tage of the alternating phase of muscle movements. The machine applies dynamic movement to the lower and upper limbs. In
such cases of minimal muscle movement an electric motor is utilized to assist. The advantage of the device is that it can
record any active movement which the person makes using their own strength, therefore progress can be monitored. The
anti-spasm function works by stopping and automatically moving back, thereby resulting in dissolution of the spasm and a
reduced frequency of spastic complications. The treatment results in the strengthening of muscles, better mobilization of joints and
self-reliance of the guest. It is used in conjunction with ergo-therapy, the rehabili-tation path and other physiotherapy treatments.
Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
ELECTROTHERAPY
TENS – Transcutaneous Electric Neuro Stimulation
This uses the principle that pain and pain impulses in the body can be dispersed through
stimulation of the nervous system by an electrical current. This electrical current is
either applied in impulses in short bursts, in waves or in a continuous stream. A pad is
placed upon the site of the problematic area and the current passes through the skin
to the nerve. This treatment is especially effective for conditions that require the
reduction of pain particularly on the back or neck, specific examples include spine
diseases, headaches and post-traumatic pain.
Time: 15-30 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
INTERFERENCE
In this treatment different electrical pads are placed onto the body in conjunction
with a small vacuum. The effect is one of a micro massage on the damaged tissue.
Depending on the pre-set frequency the muscles can be stimulated to a so-called muscle
gymnastic condition or alternatively produce relaxation in muscle tone to have an anal-
gesic effect. The treatment has two advantages, firstly it reduces pain and secondly
the micro massage improves the circulation and flow of oxygen to the tissue resulting
in a healing effect.
Time: 15-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
GALVANIC BATH
Water and a gentle electrical current are the components of this treatment that is
carried out in a bath at a temperature of 34 °C whilst the electricity is passed through
the body. The electric current causes a tranquillizing effect in cases of nerve agitation.
This makes the treatment suitable for all aching conditions of the motor organs, in
particular degenerative, inflammatory arthritis and joint problems. It also has a positive
effect in improving the metabolism of the tissues, the shrinking of oedemas and reducing
pain and spasticity.
Time: 15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic
FOUR CELL GALVANIC BATH
This treatment is especially beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis. The forearms and
lower limbs are placed into water trays of 34 °C. Water and a gentle electrical current
are the components of this treatment and the electric current is passed through these
particular body parts. Because only the limbs of the body are immersed in water, the
electric current in the four-cell bath can be given at a stronger intensity that the
full galvanic bath (See: Galvanic Bath). The treatment also has the benefit of improving
the circulation.
Time: 15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes
Benefits: Therapeutic
IONTOPHORESIS
This is a treatment whereby medicines are absorbed into the body, through the skin by means of an electric galvanic current.
This is normally recommended as a treatment in cases of arthritis and chronic inflammatory spinal problems.
Time: 15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
DIADYNAMIC STIMULUS CURRENT THERAPY
This treatment uses a mixture of electric currents, (both galvanic and impulse) that have an inhibitory or facilitatory effect
depending on the frequency, intensity and other parameters. The result is both pain relief and an improvement in circulation. Gene-
rally the treatment is prescribed for conditions such as sprains, bruises, oedemas, joint and spine wear and disc degeneration.
Time: 3-15 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
SELECTIVE STIMULUS GALVANIC CURRENT
Two pads are placed at both ends of the indicated muscle. An electric current is released between the two pads. As a result it
is possible to feel the muscle fibers contracting and relaxing as the treatment is in progress. The purpose of this treatment is
to build strength in the muscles following an injury or operation and is an important part of a rehabilitation package.
Time: 15-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic

13. MAGNETIC THERAPY
This treatment is conducted in the lying position on a bed or couch, while the treated body part is exposed to magnetic field
(magnetic blanket, contact treatment head or magnetic cylinder). By creating a weak pulsating magnetic field around the
body, it has the effect of recharging the magnetic stimulation of the cells. This results in the normalizing of the metabolism
and regeneration of cells thereby supporting the healing process. The treatment also has counter indications, such as
implanted cardio stimulators, fungal diseases, tumors and pregnancy.

PACKS
MUD PACK
In Danubius the mud used comes mainly from three famous sources: in Hungary from the famous Hévíz Thermal Lake and in
Piest’any from the sediment from the river Váh by-pass on the site of the hot springs. Saturation of this mud in the thermal
ˇ
waters creates a unique compound inhabited by healing bacteria and sulfur that is has many chemical and biological reactions.
Firstly it has excellent heating conducting features, cooling down four times slower than water and secondly when the sulfur
and minerals are absorbed through the skin, to the ligaments, cartilages and sinews it inhibits the degradation of elastine and
collagen. The mud is applied either by pump or hand onto the body in a 5 cm layer, with exception to the head and frontal parts
of the chest and neck. Its temperature is normally between 40-45 °C. The body is then wrapped up in blankets. After
20 minutes, the mud is hosed off and a 15 minute dry wrap may be conducted. The mud pack results in a reduction of local
swellings around the joints, a reduction of muscle tension and better nutrition of the cartilage, connective tissue and spinal
discs. It also strengthens anti-inflammatory activity and immune processes within the body. The mud can also be applied
partially (See: Local Mud Pack).
In Sovata Romania, mud is used from the Bear Salt Lake (See Balneotherapy: Salt Bath). This mud is applied in the same way.
The salt mud is not only effective for mobility disorders but also some skin conditions and gynecological disorders
(See: Gynecologic Mud/Peat Treatment).
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
LOCAL MUD PACK
A maximum of four local areas are permitted without a doctor’s prescription.
The mud pack results in a reduction of local swellings around the joints as well as
an easing of muscle tension. It also strengthens anti-inflammatory activity and immune
processes within the body, improving the function the cartilage, connective tissues
and spinal discs.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
PARAFFIN PACK
Paraffin packs take advantage of the heat conducting effectiveness of paraffin as it
hardens at a temperature of approximately 55 °C. There are several different types of
application methods, such as soaking a part of the body in paraffin, brushing paraffin
onto parts of the body in layers or applying a thin sheet of paraffin onto the problematic
area. The local application of the heat relaxes the muscles, causing spasm release,
easing chronic pain and supports the healing and nutrition of the tissues. It also has
sedative and immune biological features.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic
PARAFANGO PACK
Parafango is a combination of dry mud, usually used from a local source as in Piest’any
ˇ
and pure hard paraffin and paraffin oil. The mixture is melted and heated in a special
unit, then applied to the problematic area of the body in a layer 1 cm thick, just as it
begins to harden at a temperature of between 50-55 °C. The intensity of the heat is
slightly lower than pure paraffin making it a more patient-friendly treatment. The local
application of the heat relaxes the muscles, causing spasm release, easing chronic
pain and supports the healing and nutrition of the tissues. It also has sedative and
immune biological features.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations

PRIESSNITZ’S PACKS
Priessnitz’s packs consist of a cold, wet compress, usually fabric that has been soaked in cold water. This compress is then
covered with foil and then replaced with a dry, warm, wool pack. During the first 5 to 10 minutes there is an isothermal phase
with vasoconstriction, this is followed by an isothermal phase for 20 minutes where there is a switch from vasoconstriction
to vasodilation. Finally for the next 20 minutes there is ongoing local vasodilation and hyperaemia – the hyperthermal phase.
The treatment is normally given in cases on joint problems, pain and for relaxation of muscles. It also can be applied to the
chest as a treatment for pharyngitis or coughing.
Time: 60 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic

14. PACKS / cont.
PEAT PACKS
In our locations where there is no natural thermal mud, for example in Marienbad, peat
is used as an alternative. The procedure is similar to the mud pack (See: Mud Pack)
in that the peat is applied to the body at a temperature of between 40-45 °C and
wrapped either partially or fully onto the body with blankets for a period of 20 minutes.
The peat is then hosed off and the treatment may then be completed with a dry wrap
(See Other: Dry Wrap). The heat from the peat improves the blood circulation rate
and local metabolism, softening the muscles/connective tissues and having an anti-
inflammatory effect.
Time: 20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
GYNECOLOGIC MUD/PEAT TREATMENT
Peat is used in Marienbad, and mud from the salt lake in Sovata for gynecologic treatments. The peat and mud act as a form
of localized heat therapy and are applied in the form of a tampon. Not only is the treatment effective for inflammatory
conditions and rehabilitation after gynecological operations, but is prescribed as a treatment for menstruation and climax
disorders. The salt mud from Sovata is renowned for treatment successfully both primary and secondary infertility, especially
hypoplasia uteri as well as sterility caused by ovarian insufficiency and the occlusion of the oviduct.
Time: 20-60 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: Yes, Benefits: Therapeutic
SPECIAL CREAM PACKS
A variety of special cream packs are on offer for inflammatory and painful conditions. Generally the affected body part is
smeared with the cream, which is covered with a special foil and kept warm with a blanket. These creams include Inno-reuma,
Antiphlogistin and sulfur that have a cold effect when wrapped onto the skin. They also have an effective anti-inflammatory
and pain relief result. Likewise the Ritex pack achieves the same effect, but has a hot sensation when applied to the skin,
which in addition helps blood circulation to the area.

INHALATION
SALT INHALATION
The salt pulverized in mineral water or medicinal water is inhaled through a tube into
the mouth. In Sovata Romania, natural salt water is used. During the inhalation process
tiny salt particles are inhaled into the respiratory system and lungs. Since salt has an
anti-bacterial effect the salt particles help dissolve mucous and has a cleansing reac-
tion in the respiratory system. Of course since salt is a natural substance this treat-
ment is entirely based on natural resources. It is effective in the treatment of chronic
respiratory conditions, allergies or the aftereffects of a cold or respiratory infection.
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic
INHALATION
Inhalation with medicine has the same effect and uses the same principles as salt
inhalation or thermal water inhalation (See: Salt Inhalation), but has a stronger effect.
A combination of water, sometimes mineral water and medicines are inhaled through a
tube. During this inhalation process the medicine is inhaled directly into the respiratory
system and lungs where it helps to dissolve mucous and has a cleansing reaction. It is
effective in the treatment of chronic respiratory conditions, allergies or the aftereffects of
a cold or respiratory infection.
Time: 10-20 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: In some locations
Benefits: Therapeutic
OXYGEN INHALATION
The oxygen is inhaled through an intranasal tube into the nose, whilst you lie comfortably
in a reclining chair. The air being inhaled is enriched with about 40-60 % oxygen at a reason-
able humidity level. A long term supply of oxygen into the body enhances the immune
system, improves heart activity and elasticity of the lungs, helps the condition and effici-
ency of the mind and is excellent for all round health. Sometimes a vitamin drink is also
offered as part of the treatment.
Time: 50-60 minutes, Doctor’s prescription required: No
Benefits: Therapeutic, Well Being
SALT CAVE (ARTIFICIAL SALT CAVE)
The salt cave is a room constructed from real salt and depending on the location this
salt can be imported from several different sources. The room is designed to be relaxing
and atmospheric. During the treatment you lie comfortably in a chair relaxing whilst
breathing in this special salty air. In the process tiny salt particles are inhaled into the
respiratory system and lungs. Since salt has an anti-bacterial effect the salt particles
help dissolve mucous and have a cleansing reaction in the respiratory system. It is
effective in the treatment of chronic respiratory conditions, or the aftereffects of a
cold or respiratory infection. Because the body is in a totally relaxed position, the
inhalation process is more effective, and it combines improved respiratory function
with stress reduction. In some locations this treatment is followed by a thermal bath
(See Balneotherapy: Thermal Bath).
