ATTACK THE BLOCK

Big Talk Productions produced the film with Film4, The UK Film Council and Studio Canal and
distributed by Optimum Releasing.

The budget was £8 million pounds and the box office £3,615,712.

The technology helped to distribute the film through DVD, cinema and the movie was
available on different websites to buy like Amazon.

The production companies involved in creating this movie were four.

The film is the directorial debut of former television comedian Joe Cornish, and comes from
the same writing and production stable as other horror/comedies such as Shaun of the
Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

The script has been written by comedian Joe Cornish.

Despite its relatively small scale Cornish benefits from some rather strong financial backing
for a British film, making use of his pot of cash to deliver some fantastic set-pieces such as a
claustrophobic sequence in a smoke-ridden corridor where the gang have to fend off a
group of creatures without the ability to see any further than the end of their noses.

Will Clarke, CEO of Optimum Releasing backed the project.

The film stars Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Nick Frost, and Luke Treadaway.

Most of the cast were young, relative unknowns, and local to the area. According the DVD
making-of featurette, the teenagers were selected from drama classes of London council
estate schools, and then had to go through eight auditions before being offered a part. [9]
John Boyega found out about this film from an ad placed on the internet.

The plot was inspired by an event where the director was mugged himself, and after adding
the science fiction angle into the plot, Joe Cornish interviewed various kids in youth groups
in order to find out what kind of weapons they would use if a real alien invasion occurred.
Cornish also based the character of the stoner Brewis on himself in his 20s.

Produce Nira Park.

Joe Cornish was the director of the movie.

The soundtrack for the film was an original score composed by Simon Ratcliffe and Felix
Buxton of the popular British electronic dance music group Basement Jaxx.

The movie had some problems with being distributed in America

I knew they [the aliens] had to be practical. I knew we couldn’t afford CGI creatures says
Cornish.

‘Attack The Block takes place in Wyndham House in South London, but there's no point
trying to find it on Google Maps. It doesn't exist. Instead, it's a composite of a number of
London locations – a bit of Islington here, and a lot of the Heygate Estate in Elephant &
Castle there.

The teenagers were selected from drama classes of London council estate schools, and then
had to go through eight auditions before being offered a part.

There were some changes of lines in the script by Joe Cornish.

We knew we couldn’t afford to create CGI aliens, so we had to figure out how to do it in a
more lo-fi way. But I thought that was an opportunity to try some of the techniques I loved
in movies when I was growing up, so I thought it would be good to do a little bit of puppetry,
make it practical, and have something actually be there on set with the actors.

The digital technology as dvd, Blu-ray and TV are very important for the distribution of the
film because thought this the film was distributed rapidity and with the help of different
websites as amazon the dvd and Blu-ray were sold worldwide.

The film was distributed by Screen Gems in US and Optimum Releasing in UK.

The target audience for the movie is a young one. A percentage shows that most people
who watched the movie were men and between 15-24 years more precisely 48%.

Sony announced that they have picked up the film and that Screen Gems will distribute it.
Here’s what Screen Gems President Clint Culpepper had to say about the film: “Steve Bersch
screened this film for me and I fell completely in love with it. The film is, at once, charming,
scary, funny, hip, clever and completely hits its mark. I hope this is the beginning of a long
relationship with these incredibly talented filmmakers.

Microsoft has announced that it will take over an entire ad break during Channel 4's
premiere of Attack The Block this weekend. The advertising strategy was even by posters
and trailers.

Last night the best and brightest of British comic talent stepped out on the red carpet to
take in the premiere of Joe Cornish’s debut film, Attack The Block (2011).
The movie was available on DVD and BLU-RAY on the 25th of October.

You tube was important because most of the movies trailers are uploaded on YouTube as it
is very popular.
