The Harbor School needed space for the following: Boating Boat building Lab  Classroom We took these needs and expanded on them, focusing on designing for the New York harbor environment, encouraging habitat and life, and integrating the landscape to the building and the building to the water. Additionally, we wanted our building to be an example for future environmentally conscious buildings that challenge norms. Goals for Building 134
We left some components of the original building.  We chose to keep the original building shell on the original site to save money.  From the original building, we plan to renovate it, push out the waterside façade, add cantilevered second and third floors, and add a green roof over the entire building.  The green roof is the primary feature of our building; it slopes over the esplanade and down to a marshland. Design considerations
The green roof: why it’s important for The Harbor School Green roofs insulate better. Temperature “ Field experiments…found that a 6 inch extensive green roof reduced heat gains by 95% and heat losses by 26% compared to a reference roof.” The Harbor School would save money on heating and cooling costs. Sound “ a 20 cm (7.9 inches) substrate layer can reduce sound by 46-50 decibels.” Noise from the island, city, and harbor would be muted by a green roof. We’re proposing to install a 24 inch intensive green room. Information from greenroofs.org
The green roof: why it’s important for The Harbor School A green roof will filter the air moving across it. “ 1 m 2  of grass roof can remove between 0.2 kg of airborne particulates from the air every year” Green roofs create habitat and give back to their environments. Green roofs also create oxygen. “ 1.5 m 2  of uncut grass produces enough oxygen per year to supply 1 human with their yearly oxygen intake requirement” Green roofs are estimated to last twice as long as typical roofs. Green roofs can score more than 7 credits through the LEED certification system. The Harbor School needed space for the following: Boating Boat building Lab Classroom We took these needs and expanded on them, focusing on designing for the New York harbor environment, encouraging habitat and life, and integrating the landscape to the building and the building to the water. Additionally, we wanted our building to be an example for future environmentally conscious buildings that challenge norms. Goals for Building 134
  • 3. We left some components of the original building. We chose to keep the original building shell on the original site to save money. From the original building, we plan to renovate it, push out the waterside façade, add cantilevered second and third floors, and add a green roof over the entire building. The green roof is the primary feature of our building; it slopes over the esplanade and down to a marshland. Design considerations
  • 4. The green roof: why it’s important for The Harbor School Green roofs insulate better. Temperature “ Field experiments…found that a 6 inch extensive green roof reduced heat gains by 95% and heat losses by 26% compared to a reference roof.” The Harbor School would save money on heating and cooling costs. Sound “ a 20 cm (7.9 inches) substrate layer can reduce sound by 46-50 decibels.” Noise from the island, city, and harbor would be muted by a green roof. The green roof: why it’s important for The Harbor School A green roof will filter the air moving across it. “ 1 m 2 of grass roof can remove between 0.2 kg of airborne particulates from the air every year” Green roofs create habitat and give back to their environments. Green roofs also create oxygen. “ 1.5 m 2 of uncut grass produces enough oxygen per year to supply 1 human with their yearly oxygen intake requirement” Green roofs are estimated to last twice as long as typical roofs. Green roofs can score more than 7 credits through the LEED certification system.
