Sustainable development is defined as a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come. The long-term result of environmental degradation is the inability to sustain human life. Such degradation on a global scale could imply extinction for humanity.

4. Sustainable agriculture uses ecological principles to farm, hence the prefex agro- to farm and ecology- the science of the relationship between organisms and their environment. It has been defined as "an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term: 1. Satisfy human food and fiber needs 2. Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls 3. Sustain economic viability
