Past Winners 2009 Joint Second Prize: £10,000 Shamba Technologies Edward Matos (Undergraduate, Department of Engineering Mathematics) Shamba Technologies have developed a social enterprise that will disseminate bio-digester technology amongst the rural poor of developing countries.  There are 2.6 billion people around the world who collect firewood every day as fuel for cooking and heating.  In Africa alone, more than 400,000 people, mostly children, die every year from acute respiratory infections caused by inhaling smoke in the home.
