The big issues facing fleet operators: Minimising fuel costs Developing greener fleet operating strategies Risk management BIG Issue – Fuel Costs
TELEMATICS – ITS ALL ABOUT BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE You can only manage what you can measure
Environmental Benefits - Carbon Footprint The transport sector is responsible for 28% of total CO 2 emissions in the EU, with by far the majority originating from the road transport sector. In the UK, car travel grew by a fifth between 1990 and 2007, more than offsetting improvements in fuel efficiency. In the EU, carmakers must now reduce CO 2 emissions from new cars to 130g/km. Burning 1 litre of diesel emits 2.67 kilograms of carbon. Saving only 10% fuel is equivalent to circa 10 tonnes per annum in a 7.5 T tractor Green and fuel are inextricably linked by the telematics solutions – the implementation of a cost-effective green strategy paid for by reduced fuel costs . Fuel = Green

Location awareness telemetry provides the progress of a vehicle in real time and ensure routes have been adhered to and the appropriate stops have been made. TELEMATICS TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION Telemetry Reports–Waste Collection- Location Awareness
Real time live reporting of vehicle weight direct to the driver and traffic control supports risk management strategies to ensure individual axles and overall weight are not exceeded. This is a VOSA legal requirement and abuse may lead to the loss of the operators licence. Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Waste management is just one set of axes through the telematics matrix. This PPT highlights :- Telematics / telemetry (what’s it all about) Business Case – (Headline) Features and Benefits Continual training and assessment Fuel and Carbon savings Management and driver reports Case studies Trials Waste management networks / partners Other Council vehicles Carbon trading Telematics – a business solution Emphasis the change management skill sets required to implement a meaningful robust telematics business solution,( I would suggest those same change management skill sets required for the alternative energy driven fleets) and to Take a more holistic view on the delivery of strategies to reduce fuel usage and implement low emission strategies Highlight a few case studies throughout
  2. In reality the main drivers in this vertical sector are NOT green but dominated by fuel and fuel prices. Green issues and risk management are, in many cases, secondary.    Fortunately these 3 aspects are inextricably linked by the telematics business solution and provide a 3 for 1 business solution offering.
  3. So what is today’s telematics solutions all about   business intelligence – you can only manage what you can measure
  4. – fortunately there is the inextricable link between fuel savings and carbon emission and a cost-effective green strategy is paid for by fuel savings   A 10% fuel saving is equivalent to a 10 tonnes of carbon saving per annum in a 7.5t tractor
  5. Specialist Telematics Developments   The most relevant for cost saving and reduced carbon emissions is the application to Waste Management   - Waste management (Public sector /Councils)
  6. Fuel and financial savings are a primary objective but inextricably delivers green strategies and improved risk management GPS provides location awareness
  7. Engine CANbus delivers reports on engine and fuel management
  8. Body CANbus delivers reports on the activation of the prime body facilities
  9. Axle weights are delivered to ensure VOSA compliance and total lift weights
  10. Infra red curtain monitors bin lifts
  11. Thermal sensors
  12. The headline features identify those telemetry aspects that provide COST SAVINGS - fuel, efficiency of deployment, driver behaviour, and live managment reporting.
  13. Fuel and financial savings were a primary objective but inextricably delivers green strategies and improved risk management reduced fuel usage and hence costs reduced carbon emissions monitored, recorded, and reported Overall improvement in operational efficiencies – live monitor, recording, and reports Improved risk management due to improved driver behaviour and safer driving.
  14. So we have a very useful and quantitative Telematics business tool BUT benefits only maximised and work fully if embraced by the whole management /driver team – in many cases requiring a whole management culture change and efforts on a continuous basis.   – to maximise benefits there must be a whole team involvement and the passion for continuous improvement – just like any other change management brief. Must be management driven and involve equally Middle management Drivers All logistics staff
  15. Fuel and financial savings were a primary objective but inextricably delivers green strategies and improved risk management However the major focus is on driver training and support . The In-cab Driver Support technology is a massive boost for driver training, and compliance with company mandates and legal requirements. Reported fuel savings are between 7 per cent to 15 per cent The Energy Efficient Driver Indicator (EEDI) * is an innovative technical development that feeds driver performance direct to the driver via the in-cab mobile data terminal (MDT) in real time. As part of the continuous training strategy we can now integrate and include in-cab devices to support driver behaviour and report direct to the driver and traffic control. Sustainable benefits derive in the main from monitoring and control of   Harsh acceleration Harsh braking Over revving Speeding Excessive idling Excessive throttle   And these elements are reported direct to the driver by the in-cab monitor – the slide shows a couple of warning examples and the overall driver index. Maximum benefits are achieved when clear guidelines and benchmarking are agreed, accepted, and in place by the whole team – everyone needs to gain from the experience. In the case of the driver by affordable incentives.
  16. Fuel and financial savings were a primary objective but inextricably delivers green strategies and improved risk management CMS case studies deliver substantial financial returns in the waste (and other) sectors
  17. The green banding shows drivers working within agreed levels The red banding identifies those drivers who need further training – drill down to individual driver reports The example chosen here being, cruise analysis, vehicle utilisation, and optimum driving A bespoke bundle of parameters can be collated to provide an overall index – the EEDI - which could be used to incentivise drivers
  18. further drill down provides driver compliance alerts Over Revving Throttle Engine Load Speed Idle Fuel TOTAL
  19. Automatic emailed reports provide an analysis over the fleet on a daily (or more frequent) basis, and compare budget v actual performance to monitor fuel Carbon Driving style
  20. Live reporting provides daily comparison of prescribed routes and a daily summary of cost per household – the total analysis of activity delivered to management daily.
  21. Each days activity can be drilled down to individual street activity on the route
  22. Location awareness monitors routes and pick ups and will provide the progress of a vehicle in real time and ensure routes have been adhered to and the appropriate stops have been made.
  23. Real time live reporting of vehicle weight direct to the driver and traffic control supports risk management strategies to ensure individual axles and overall weight are not exceeded. This is a VOSA legal requirement and abuse may lead to the loss of the operators licence.
  24. – case studies are provided by Birmingham City Council Fuel savings of £264K after costs per annum Carbon savings of 1.3 tonnes per annum Veolia Fuel savings of £117K after costs 554 tonnes of Carbon Biffa 13% saving on fuel £1.01 million over a fleet of 1000 vehicles
  25. Seeing is believing and trials are conducted in a measured and structured manner by industry professional trainers.
  26. The CMS telematics waste systems have been developed over a period of time by working closely with the Council authorities and the leading vehicle manufacturers in the field, and are continually enhanced to meet the changing end user customer needs.
  27. The CMS telematics waste systems have been developed over a period of time by working closely with the Council authorities and the leading vehicle manufacturers in the field, and are continually enhanced to meet the changing end user customer needs.
  28. Telemetry is also developed for use with a variety of Council (and other) vehicles to monitor and control service levels
  29. Carbon reduction trading is also possible through DSCEL
  30. Telematics provides a total business solution and is used for Fault diagnostics and Maintenance, essential to maximise fuel and carbon emissions reductions.
  31. The whole telematics business solution is paid for by reduced fuel costs but also mitigates corporate compliance and supports risk management strategies, provides live job management, and supports the drivers
  32. Telematics supports Accident management – involving underwriters, insurers, brokers, telematics companies – to address risk mitigation and reduced insurance premiums
  33. Telematics in new energy applications
  34. Conclusion – Knowledge is Power
