Los retos actuales que enfrenta Colombia para el desarrollo de su infraestructura de
transporte, minera y de generación eléctrica, entre otros, hacen que los proyectos que
involucren el diseño y la construcción de túneles estén dentro de las prioridades
estratégicas del País y esto sin duda requiere de la participación de muchos ingenieros con
sólidos conocimientos en el tema.

El propósito de esta cátedra es brindar un panorama amplio, claro y actualizado sobre la
temática de los túneles en aspectos como métodos de caracterización de los macizos
rocosos, criterios de diseño según las condiciones del terreno y del proyecto, diferentes
procesos constructivos, aspectos ambientales, seguimiento y evaluación del
comportamiento de túneles, etc.

John A Hudson, BSc, PhD, DSc, FREng, obtained his BSc degree in Mining
                 Engineering from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1965
                 and his PhD in rock mechanics from the University of Minnesota, USA, in
                 1970. After a further two-year period of post-doctoral study at the
                 University of Minnesota, from 1972-1977 he worked in the Tunnels Division
                 at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, UK. Then, from 1977-1979
at the Department of Strategic Research Operations in the Department of the Environment,
UK, from 1979-1980 as a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin, USA, and from
1980-1983 at the Building Research Station, UK. During this latter period, he was awarded
the DSc degree by the Heriot-Watt University. From 1983 to the present, he has been
affiliated as Reader and then Professor in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering
at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, UK. He
was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1998. Also and since 1985,
Professor Hudson has acted as an independent consultant on more than 100 projects.
Xia-Ting Feng, BSc, PhD, obtained his BSc degree in Mining Engineering
                 from the Northeast University of Science and Technology in Shenyang,
                 China, in 1986 and his PhD in rock mechanics from the Northeastern
                 University, China, in 1992. Then he has been affiliated as Lecturer, Associate
                 Professor (from 1993-1996) and Professor (from 1996-2001) at the same
                 university, from September 1995 to March 1996 as a Visiting Researcher and
                 from December 1996 to November 1997 as a ITIT Special Research Officer at
                 National Institute for Resource and Environment, Tsukuba, Japan, and from
                 May to November 1996 as a Research
Officer at Department of Mining Engineering, the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
As a Professor of Hundred Talent Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he moved to
Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998, from 2001-
2003 as Vice Director in Charge and from 2003-2005 as Director of this institute, from 2001-
present as Director of Key Laboratory of Rock and Soil Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of
Sciences. He worked in Imperial College, UK, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and Lille
University of Science and Technology, France, as a Visiting Professor or Academic Visitor in
short term.
Prof. Walter Wittke, born in 1934, in Hamburg Germany, got his diploma in
                      Civil Engineering in the University of Hannover in 1960; his doctoral thesis on
                      “Shear Strength of Cohesionless Soil” was approved by the University of
                      Karlsruhe in 1963, and after a stay at the University of California, Berkeley,
                      and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, was appointed in 1965 as Lecturer
                      for Soil and Rock Mechanics at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1970 he was
                      appointed as Professor at the same University and in 1974 to 2000, as
                      Professor and Director of the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Foundation
                      Engineering at the University of Aachen.
Prof. Wittke has published over 300 publications, delivered more than 100 lectures, has been referee
for Ph.D. theses, was Chairman of the 7th ISRM International Congress in 1991, of International
Symposia in 1970, 1974, 1982, and of numerous National Symposia, all held in Aachen.
Prof. Wittke was Chairman of the ISRM German National Group, and, besides being a Fellow Member
of ISRM, he is Member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
(ISSMGE), of the International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG), of the National Committee
of International Tunneling Association (ITA), of the National Committee of the International
Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD), Chairman of various Commissions, Consultant on numerous
projects in Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in Germany and abroad.

                     1988-1990: Student of civil engineering, Aachen Technical University (RWTH
                     Aachen), pre-diploma.
                     1990-1994: Student of civil engineering (hydraulic, water supply and sanitation
                     engineering), University of Hannover. Practical work in Germany and foreign
                     countries.
                     1994: Master thesis at the Virginia Polytechnic and State University, Blacksburg,
                     Virginia, USA.
1994-1996: Referendarin (candidate for higher civil service) for the Federal Administration for
Waterways and Navigation (Wasser- und Schiffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes), Second State
Examination.
since 1997: Employee of the engineering firm WBI, Prof. Dr.-Ing. W. Wittke Consulting Engineers for
Tunneling and Geotechnical Engineering GmbH, Aachen.
1999: Doktor-Ingenieur (Ph.D. degree) of the Aachen Technical University (RWTH Aachen)
2001: Proxy of the engineering firm Prof. Dr.-Ing. W. Wittke Consulting Engineers for Tunneling and
Geotechnical Engineering, WBI GmbH, Aachen

Caracterización, Diseño y Construcción de Túneles (CHARACTERIZATION, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TUNNELS) (3 al 19 de Julio) Los retos actuales que enfrenta Colombia para el desarrollo de su infraestructura de transporte, minera y de generación eléctrica, entre otros, hacen que los proyectos que involucren el diseño y la construcción de túneles estén dentro de las prioridades estratégicas del País y esto sin duda requiere de la participación de muchos ingenieros con sólidos conocimientos en el tema. El propósito de esta cátedra es brindar un panorama amplio, claro y actualizado sobre la temática de los túneles en aspectos como métodos de caracterización de los macizos rocosos, criterios de diseño según las condiciones del terreno y del proyecto, diferentes procesos constructivos, aspectos ambientales, seguimiento y evaluación del comportamiento de túneles, etc.

John A Hudson, BSc, PhD, DSc, FREng, obtained his BSc degree in Mining Engineering from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1965 and his PhD in rock mechanics from the University of Minnesota, USA, in 1970. After a further two-year period of post-doctoral study at the University of Minnesota, from 1972-1977 he worked in the Tunnels Division at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, UK. Then, from 1977-1979 at the Department of Strategic Research Operations in the Department of the Environment, UK, from 1979-1980 as a Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin, USA, and from 1980-1983 at the Building Research Station, UK. During this latter period, he was awarded the DSc degree by the Heriot-Watt University. From 1983 to the present, he has been affiliated as Reader and then Professor in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, UK. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1998. Also and since 1985, Professor Hudson has acted as an independent consultant on more than 100 projects.

Xia-Ting Feng, BSc, PhD, obtained his BSc degree in Mining Engineering from the Northeast University of Science and Technology in Shenyang, China, in 1986 and his PhD in rock mechanics from the Northeastern University, China, in 1992. Then he has been affiliated as Lecturer, Associate Professor (from 1993-1996) and Professor (from 1996-2001) at the same university, from September 1995 to March 1996 as a Visiting Researcher and from December 1996 to November 1997 as a ITIT Special Research Officer at National Institute for Resource and Environment, Tsukuba, Japan, and from May to November 1996 as a Research Officer at Department of Mining Engineering, the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. As a Professor of Hundred Talent Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he moved to Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998, from 2001- 2003 as Vice Director in Charge and from 2003-2005 as Director of this institute, from 2001- present as Director of Key Laboratory of Rock and Soil Mechanics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He worked in Imperial College, UK, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and Lille University of Science and Technology, France, as a Visiting Professor or Academic Visitor in short term.
  • 6. Prof. Walter Wittke, born in 1934, in Hamburg Germany, got his diploma in Civil Engineering in the University of Hannover in 1960; his doctoral thesis on “Shear Strength of Cohesionless Soil” was approved by the University of Karlsruhe in 1963, and after a stay at the University of California, Berkeley, and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, was appointed in 1965 as Lecturer for Soil and Rock Mechanics at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1970 he was appointed as Professor at the same University and in 1974 to 2000, as Professor and Director of the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at the University of Aachen. Prof. Wittke has published over 300 publications, delivered more than 100 lectures, has been referee for Ph.D. theses, was Chairman of the 7th ISRM International Congress in 1991, of International Symposia in 1970, 1974, 1982, and of numerous National Symposia, all held in Aachen. Prof. Wittke was Chairman of the ISRM German National Group, and, besides being a Fellow Member of ISRM, he is Member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), of the International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG), of the National Committee of International Tunneling Association (ITA), of the National Committee of the International Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD), Chairman of various Commissions, Consultant on numerous projects in Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in Germany and abroad.

W. Wittke Consulting Engineers for Tunneling and Geotechnical Engineering GmbH, Aachen. 1999: Doktor-Ingenieur (Ph.D. degree) of the Aachen Technical University (RWTH Aachen) 2001: Proxy of the engineering firm Prof. Dr.-Ing.
