1) What are we looking for?
2) Why do we want to know if plants produce
chlorophyll when they are in a dark place?
3) How did we plant them?
4) How did we measure them?
5) What materials did we use?
6) How to extract the chlorophyll from the plant:
7) How did we compare the chlorophyll?
8) Why do plants grow in darkness?
9) Why we want to know if plants grow in
darkness?

DOES THE PLANT PRODUCES CHLOROPHYLL IN THE DARKNESS?
For answering that question, we planted some seeds in different yogurts
and in different conditions, so we can know if the light is necessary for the
plant to activate the chlorophyll:
Condition 1(no light)
Condition 2(three holes)
Condition 3(five holes)
Condition 4(seven holes)
Condition 5(totally light)
We want to know if plants produces
chlorophyll in darkness because we just
know that when a plant grows it has
different colours, but a normal plant
grows in a place where there is most of
the time in light, so we want to know
what happens when the plant grows (if
it grows…) in totally darkness.
We collected 40 yogurts, then we
took some cotton, we introduced it
inside each yogurt and in the cotton
we left some seeds, then we watered
each recipient with the same
quantity of water, and then we left
them in each box with the different
conditions.
We measured them each week, we
watered them each 2-3 days with
the same quantity of water,
we took a photo for controlling
them in a cualitative way.
We measured them in cm, and at the
end we measured the colour of the
clorophyll taking it out of the plant.
We used 50 empty yogurts, lots of
seeds, cotton, water (same
quantity), a dark box, other box
with three holes, another with five
holes, other with seven holes and
natural light, for example a
window.
1) First we cut the leaves into small pieces.
2) Then we crush them, later we add alcohol and we
crush them again.
3) We add sugar and we continue crushing them.
4) When we finish crushing the leaves we use filter
paper, to filter the liquid.
5) We cut a piece of filter paper and we draw on it a
line.
6) We add some drops on the line.
7) We put the piece of filter paper into alcohol.
8) Then, we put into the liquid a new piece of paper,
when we take it out, this will be our final state of
the chlorophyll.
 We are going to make a
scale of different tones of
green from a lighter
green, to a darker one.
 We are going to use
lettuce´s leaves for
extracting their
chlorophyll to make the
scale.
 When the plants grow, we
are going to extract the
plants´ chlorophyll and
compare with the
lettuce´s scale.
Plants grow more in the
darkness because they are
looking for the light and they
grow until they empty their
reserves of the seed (lentil) .
When they are in total
darkness, their defenses
mechanism make them grow
to find the light.
We want to know if plants
grow without light because
light is one of the most
important elements in the
life of the vegetables,
because it exercises a
fundamental influence
both for its growth and its
survival.
We think it is an
interesting topic.

Table 2
• Table 2:
We have only compared the two weeks of growing
because we think are the most important weeks.
The second table explains differences between the medias
of the conditions. the differences are between of one
condition and the conditions at the right. In the last
(light) conditions, the difference is between the first
condition (dark) and the last conditions.
Comparison
GRAPHIC
 In this graphic we represent the evolution
of the medias of the plants in each
condition. It is expressed in cm and we
have measured them each week.
 The plants have grown much in the
firsts weeks and in the last weeks,
they have stoped growing and
decreased.
LIGHT: first week 14,5 cm and
second week 21,6 cm.
3 HOLES: first week 15,3 cm and
second week 22,6.
5 HOLES: first week 14,3 cm and
second week 23,7 cm.
7 HOLES: first week 14,5 cm and
second week 22,7 cm.
DARKNESS: first week 15,2 cm and
second week 26 cm.
 These are the measurements of the
medias of the plants in each condition
during two weeks:
 Total dark: we think that in the future the plants in
total darkness, will grow until they consume all the
reserves of the seed and then, they´ll died.
 3,5,7 holes: the plants in the 3, 5 and 7 holes
conditions, they´ll grow until they reach the holes of
light and then, they will stop growing and will died.
 Total light: the plants in total light will grow less and
will stop until they died.

For answering that question, we planted some seeds in different yogurts and in different conditions, so we can know if the light is necessary for the plant to activate the chlorophyll: Condition 1(no light) Condition 2(three holes) Condition 3(five holes) Condition 4(seven holes) Condition 5(totally light)
  • 4. We want to know if plants produces chlorophyll in darkness because we just know that when a plant grows it has different colours, but a normal plant grows in a place where there is most of the time in light, so we want to know what happens when the plant grows (if it grows…) in totally darkness.
  • 5. We collected 40 yogurts, then we took some cotton, we introduced it inside each yogurt and in the cotton we left some seeds, then we watered each recipient with the same quantity of water, and then we left them in each box with the different conditions.
  • 6. We measured them each week, we watered them each 2-3 days with the same quantity of water, we took a photo for controlling them in a cualitative way. We measured them in cm, and at the end we measured the colour of the clorophyll taking it out of the plant.
  • 7. We used 50 empty yogurts, lots of seeds, cotton, water (same quantity), a dark box, other box with three holes, another with five holes, other with seven holes and natural light, for example a window.
  • 8. 1) First we cut the leaves into small pieces. 2) Then we crush them, later we add alcohol and we crush them again. 3) We add sugar and we continue crushing them. 4) When we finish crushing the leaves we use filter paper, to filter the liquid. 5) We cut a piece of filter paper and we draw on it a line. 6) We add some drops on the line. 7) We put the piece of filter paper into alcohol. 8) Then, we put into the liquid a new piece of paper, when we take it out, this will be our final state of the chlorophyll.
  • 9.  We are going to make a scale of different tones of green from a lighter green, to a darker one.  We are going to use lettuce´s leaves for extracting their chlorophyll to make the scale.  When the plants grow, we are going to extract the plants´ chlorophyll and compare with the lettuce´s scale.
  • 10. Plants grow more in the darkness because they are looking for the light and they grow until they empty their reserves of the seed (lentil) . When they are in total darkness, their defenses mechanism make them grow to find the light.
  • 11. We want to know if plants grow without light because light is one of the most important elements in the life of the vegetables, because it exercises a fundamental influence both for its growth and its survival. We think it is an interesting topic.

  • 26.  In this graphic we represent the evolution of the medias of the plants in each condition. It is expressed in cm and we have measured them each week.  The plants have grown much in the firsts weeks and in the last weeks, they have stoped growing and decreased.

DARKNESS: first week 15,2 cm and second week 26 cm.  These are the measurements of the medias of the plants in each condition during two weeks:
  • 28.  Total dark: we think that in the future the plants in total darkness, will grow until they consume all the reserves of the seed and then, they´ll died.  3,5,7 holes: the plants in the 3, 5 and 7 holes conditions, they´ll grow until they reach the holes of light and then, they will stop growing and will died.  Total light: the plants in total light will grow less and will stop until they died.
