Introduction

 OEM Grid Control 11g becomes more and more
popular
 It allows to operate and monitor Oracle components
(targets) like databases, listeners, hosts, Weblogic
Servers etc.
 OEM Grid Control 11g provides a new infrastructure
and some new features like MOS integration
 Some OEM Grid Control 11g features help to decrease
the Oracle management overhead like patch
deployment with the “Patch Plans”

 The Name: Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control 11g
 Grid Control 10g compliant
 Enterprise Manager because it deals with enterprise management
 New architecture: Weblogic Server instead of Oracle
Application Server (like other Fusion Middleware products)
 Better integration of My Oracle Support
 My Oracle Support interface is directly integrated in the console
 New Patch plan concept, managed from the MOS allows to
download, validate, install, and apply patches (validation was not
possible in 10.2.0.5)
 Better integration of Oracle VM Virtualization (no patch
needed)

 Only the packs must be licensed
 Most important Pack for Monitoring is the Diagnostic Pack

 A tool or script accesses Grid Control Monitoring tables

 Same licence model as the databases covered by
monitoring
 NUP and Processor models are available
 OEM Grid Control 11g repository database does not need
database licences
 OEM can only be licensed with Enterprise Edition licenses

 The RefreshFromMyOracleSupport Job retrieves the MOS
information in order to compare the patch status of the
monitored targets
 This job is created while setting the MOS credential settings
 The job must be copied in the Job Library and scheduled
once a day

 Through the MOS integration and refreshed information,
patch advices are displayed
 These patches can be deployed with the OEM Grid Control
11g patch plan feature
 To use patch plans the Oracle provisioning and patch
automation pack must be licensed

Patch plans - conclusions

 Patch plans allow to decrease Oracle software management
overhead
 Patch plans can be easily monitored and recovered in case
of errors
 However patch plan need an internet access to be efficient.
The offline requires manual download of the patches
 The technology must be trusted for patching, however
might be more efficient than human-patching :-)

OCM & Harvester architecture

 The Oracle Configuration Manager (OCM) allows to provide
information about your infrastructure to My Oracle Support
 Through OCM Oracle can evaluate the benefit of some
fixes/patches according to your environment
 As soon as a patch is installed, OCM informs the Oracle
support which adapts re-evaluates the advices
 Grid Control offers an improved functionality based on the
Harvester
 This functionality exists since 10.2.0.5 but is now better
integrated in Grid Control 11g
 This feature allows to avoid deploying an OCM configuration
per server

 In MOS the OCM discovered targets can be associated to a
CSI number
 Oracle provides (preventive) advices and ease the SR
creation, based on a target discovered by the OCM
 CSI association:

maintenance jobs
 Go in “Setup  Management Services and Repository 
Errors” to identify any Harvester configuration error. For

Conclusion

 Oracle Grid Control 11g is a powerful monitoring and
management framework
 In order to provide a clear advantage compared to other
monitoring tools, Oracle proposes a deep MOS integration
 Grid Control becomes also a software management
framework allowing to benefit quickly from Oracle
deployment
 Despite the costs and licensing strategy, OEM Grid Control
11g is now accepted by many customers (Monitoring tools
are expansive anyway)
 dbi services proposes methods and standards to get access
to this powerful framework
