Flipped Classroom

• Do homework in class (flip)

• Let students review lectures at home

• Spend class time in solving problems

• Sorting out questions they have

• Teacher is an interactive problem solver.

                Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 14
MOOC

• Massive Open On-line Courses
  – Stanford, MIT, Harvard, UC Berkeley

• Coursera, Udacity

Blended Learning
• Mix traditional and on-line learning
• Traditional learning
  – Bright students get bored
  – Meant for the students around the mean
  – Comparatively slow one get left out
• On-line courses lets students learn at their
  own pace
• Can these two be blended optimally?
                Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 17
New Age Text Books
• Electronic format helps make text books easily
  changeable
• Updated books can be delivered
  immediately, anywhere
• Like set top boxes and other CE devices changes can be
  delivered over the air
• Can be extremely customizable

                   Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 18
Interesting Models
• Innosight institute has suggested some
  interesting models for blended learning
• http://www.innosightinstitute.org/media-
  room/publications/blended-learning/blended-
  learning-model-definitions
• This could be the basis for arriving at a future
  model that is effective

Rotation Model
• Rotation model
• Within a given course or subject students rotate on a
fixed schedule or at the teacher’s discretion between
  learning modalities
• at least one of which is online learning
• Other modalities might include activities such as
   – small-group or full-class instruction
   – group projects
   – individual tutoring
   – pencil-and-paper assignments.
                 Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 21
Flex Model
• Flex model
• content and instruction are delivered primarily by
  the Internet
• students move on an individually customized, fluid
  schedule among learning modalities
• teacher-of-record is on-site. The teacher-of-record or
other Adults provide face-to-face support on a
  flexible and adaptive as-needed basis
   – small-group instruction, group projects, and
     individual tutoring.
• Face-to-face support may vary
                  Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 22
Self-Blend Model
• Self-Blend model
• Students choose to take one or more courses entirely
online to supplement their traditional courses.
• Teacher-of-record is the online teacher. Students may
take the online courses either on the brick-and-
  mortar campus or off-site.
• Differs from full-time online learning and the Enriched-
Virtual model. It is not a whole-school experience.
Students self-blend some individual online courses and
take other courses at a brick-and-mortar campus with
  face-to-face teachers.

                   Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 23
Enriched Virtual Model
• Enriched-Virtual model
• A whole-school experience in which within each course
students divide their time between attending a brick-and-
mortar campus and learning remotely using online delivery
  of content and instruction.
• Many Enriched-Virtual programs began as full-time online
schools and then developed blended programs to provide
  students with brick-and-mortar school experiences.
• The Enriched-Virtual model differs from the Flipped
Classroom because in Enriched-Virtual programs, students
seldom attend the brick-and-mortar campus every
weekday. It differs from the Self-Blend model because it is a
  full-school experience, not a course-by-course model.

Some Examples-New Designations

• Following slide is a recent announcement of a
  conference on Education

• What is interesting is the new kind of
designations you see that relate to the
  complex management situation

  • 10. Lecture Capture • Video record the classroom lecture • Make it available on the institution site • Students download at anytime, anywhere in the campus • Review it as many times as they need to • Can be the basis of a flipped classroom Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 10
  • 11. Quick Classroom Setup Classroom LAN or Wi-fi Teacher’s laptop With a wireless router Student machines Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 11
  • 12. Video Conferencing Instructor location Internet cloud Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 12
  • 13. BYOD • iPhone • iPad • Smartphones • Tablets • eReaders • Ultrabooks Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 13
  • 14. Flipped Classroom • Do homework in class (flip) • Let students review lectures at home • Spend class time in solving problems • Sorting out questions they have • Teacher is an interactive problem solver. Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 14
  • 15. MOOC • Massive Open On-line Courses – Stanford, MIT, Harvard, UC Berkeley • Coursera, Udacity • Learnable • Khan Academy Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 15
  • 16. Khan Academy Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 16
  • 17. Blended Learning • Mix traditional and on-line learning • Traditional learning – Bright students get bored – Meant for the students around the mean – Comparatively slow one get left out • On-line courses lets students learn at their own pace • Can these two be blended optimally? Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 17
  • 18. New Age Text Books • Electronic format helps make text books easily changeable • Updated books can be delivered immediately, anywhere • Like set top boxes and other CE devices changes can be delivered over the air • Can be extremely customizable Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 18
  • 19. Interesting Models • Innosight institute has suggested some interesting models for blended learning • http://www.innosightinstitute.org/media- room/publications/blended-learning/blended- learning-model-definitions • This could be the basis for arriving at a future model that is effective Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 19
  • 20. Blended Learning Models Courtesy -Innosight Institute http://www.innosightinstitute.org/media-room/publications/blended-learning/blended-learning-model- definitions Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 20
  • 21. Rotation Model • Rotation model • Within a given course or subject students rotate on a fixed schedule or at the teacher’s discretion between learning modalities • at least one of which is online learning • Other modalities might include activities such as – small-group or full-class instruction – group projects – individual tutoring – pencil-and-paper assignments. Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 21
  • 22. Flex Model • Flex model • content and instruction are delivered primarily by the Internet • students move on an individually customized, fluid schedule among learning modalities • teacher-of-record is on-site. The teacher-of-record or other Adults provide face-to-face support on a flexible and adaptive as-needed basis – small-group instruction, group projects, and individual tutoring. • Face-to-face support may vary Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 22
  • 23. Self-Blend Model • Self-Blend model • Students choose to take one or more courses entirely online to supplement their traditional courses. • Teacher-of-record is the online teacher. Students may take the online courses either on the brick-and- mortar campus or off-site. • Differs from full-time online learning and the Enriched- Virtual model. It is not a whole-school experience. Students self-blend some individual online courses and take other courses at a brick-and-mortar campus with face-to-face teachers. Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 23
  • 24. Enriched Virtual Model • Enriched-Virtual model • A whole-school experience in which within each course students divide their time between attending a brick-and- mortar campus and learning remotely using online delivery of content and instruction. • Many Enriched-Virtual programs began as full-time online schools and then developed blended programs to provide students with brick-and-mortar school experiences. • The Enriched-Virtual model differs from the Flipped Classroom because in Enriched-Virtual programs, students seldom attend the brick-and-mortar campus every weekday. It differs from the Self-Blend model because it is a full-school experience, not a course-by-course model. Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 24
  • 25. Some Examples-New Designations • Following slide is a recent announcement of a conference on Education • What is interesting is the new kind of designations you see that relate to the complex management situation Debasis Das www.exemplarconsulting.in 25
