Only 10 miles from center city Philadelphia, the 42-acre Elkins Estate in Cheltenham Township, boasts two separate Estate houses – the glamorous Elstowe Manor, and the Chelten House, once the home to William L. Elkins , a noted financier, transportation entrepreneur and philanthropist. The Elkins Estate was built in 1896 by Architect Horace Trumbauer , an important architect of the gilded age. He was responsible for designing homes for the wealthiest families in America, as well as major cultural institutions such as the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Rich in history and charm the glamorous Elstowe Manor was built in 1895 and fashioned in Italian Renaissance style. In 1896, Mr. Elkin’s son George W. Elkins commissioned Trumbauer to build Chelten House , a large half-timbered Elizabethan style house. Mr. Elkins was fundamental in the creation of the Pennsylvania Railroad system (SEPTA), redefined the oil refining industry in Philadelphia, and funded many industrial projects including Thomas Edison . 4. In 1931, the entire Estate was purchased by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de’ Ricci . Over the next 75 years, the Sisters conducted religious retreats and days of recollection, and built two additions to Elstowe Manor to house their guests. They also meticulously maintained the buildings and grounds, thus preserving the rich history of the Estate. In 2008, the sisters decided to relocate and the next chapter has emerged, to preserve the legacy of William L. Elkins and his highly visible Philadelphia family. The mission of the Elkins Estate is to preserve the historical integrity of the property, promote and share the legacy of William L. Elkins with the community; with the commitment to follow sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices. Our Method: Utilizing contemporary methods of delivery, we integrate wellness of the mind-body-spirit through holistic health practices, disease preventative lifestyles, and techniques to balance the mind and spirit.
