This year the Rotaract club, Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo, introduces 'The Kaleidoscope', a quarterly newsletter bringing you the latest news and a summary of all the activities and events undertaken by our club this quarter.
2. FROM THE EDITOR
Have you ever felt like all the forces in the universe are working against you?
Felt like hard work didn’t quite pay off?
Felt like no matter what you do, you can’t make a difference? After all, you are just one,
just one of seven billion people, your contribution is miniscule, why bother?
When you are young you are budding with ideas, creativity and dreams of changing the world. But with time reality sinks in, you
learn the harsh lessons of life; you become wary of being knocked over and over again by the dashing of your hopes and upsetting
of your calculations. You give up, or conform, or choose to settle for less, because chasing your dream has become too challenging,
too difficult, too exhausting.
Well you are not alone. We urge you not to give in, we urge you not to give up.
We, the members of the Rotaract club, University of Colombo, Faculty of Management and Finance are a bunch of undergraduates
hailing from diverse backgrounds, religions and races united under the badge of Rotaract, committed to serving our community,
determined to make a difference.
Our Rotaract theme for the year 2012/2013 – ‘Going the Distance’ - portrays our commitment towards going that extra mile to achieve
our goals. We are determined to go the distance, to make a difference. We may not be able to change the world, but we will at least
make a small difference in the community we live in, for a better tomorrow.
This year we welcome you to ‘The Kaleidoscope’, the quarterly newsletter of the Rotaract club, University of Colombo, Faculty of
Management and Finance. The Kaleidoscope hopes to inform and disseminate news about events, projects and developments taking
place in our club to all interested parties and also serve as a means of keeping in touch with those involved in the Management
Faculty and Rotaract communities. The Kaleidoscope will also introduce a section on international understanding and one on profes-
sional development where we will feature articles and activities of interest.
As the editor, I hope to capture the depth and diversity of our club’s kaleidoscope of people and activities and share it with all of you!

8. One Year and
Eight Awards
rtr ransimalie warnapura
30 th June was an amazing day for the Rotaract Club of
University of Colombo Faculty of Management and
Finance. The 22nd District Assembly for the Rotary
International District 3220 – Sri Lanka recognized
our club and our members with many awards in the one year of action we can
claim for ourselves.
The list of awards received is as follows:
1. 2011/12 Changemaker Award - Rotary International Recognition
2. Award of Citation
3. Award for Hosting HIV and AIDS Walk 2012
4. Awards for Hosting World Down Syndrome Day
5. The Spirit of Service Award to Rtr. Thilini Alahakoon
6. Rotaractor of the Month (March) to Rtr. Thilini Alahakoon
7. Award of Recognition to Rtr. Nadisha Colombage
8. Rotaract Paragon Award to Rtr. Nadisha Colombage
The Changemaker Award is one of the best rewards a club can get for its service
throughout the year; Rotary International awards this to a select few clubs for
meeting the criteria set forth by them. Likewise, the award of Citation garners
district approval by the District Committee for the Club’s performance and conduct
throughout the year.
Rtr. Thilini Alahakoon, the Community Service Director for 2011/12 was recognized
with the Spirit of Service Award for all the hard work she put in throughout the
Rotaract year of 2011/12. Her service during the World Down Syndrome Day and
during the HIV and AIDS Walk is seemingly unsurpassable. In recognition her out-
standing service she also received the Rotaractor of the Month Award for March.
Rtr. Nadisha Colombage, the Secretary for 2011/12 was given an award of recogni-
tion for the outstanding service rendered by her to the District 3220 – Sri Lanka as
the Assistant District Community Services Director in 2011/12. In addition, she was
the recipient of one of the most coveted titles Rotaract Paragon: one which has
been awarded to only five Rotaractors in recognition of their spirit, leadership and
service to the District 3220 and to their clubs.
It was indeed with much pride and pleasure we received the recognition accorded
us, a club just blossoming to become, hopefully, one of the greats. Let’s keep our
fingers crossed and endeavour to work towards this end with many more years of
service to come.

ulties, after which each group had to come up with a name and
perform a “Haka” (team cheer). The Rotaractors put their cre-
ativity and dancing skills to the test and named themselves the
Hotaractors, Naughty Blues, Purple Power, and FUTA (Federation
of United Thanakolapetha’s Association) and performed some
very interesting team cheers. The four teams competed with
each other in many activities including building the tallest
tower with straws, while not talking to each other.
The highlight of the day’s activities was the treasure hunt that
sent 70 students running around the university premises des-
perately looking for hidden clues. The treasure hunt also had
challenges to be completed in order to proceed, which added
excitement to the hunt. As we at UOC like to get everybody
involved, our animal friends were no exception and one of the
challenges required each team to take a picture with a puppy.
This sent the Rotaractors on a wild puppy chase, trying to coax
and convince the faculty pups to pose with them. The treasure
hunt ended in a draw with the Naughty Blues and Purple Power
finding the grand prize (Chunky Chocs, no less).
During the day we also had Rtr. Minoli give a brief presenta-
tion about the Rotaract hierarchies, especially for the benefit
of new members (and some old) about what exactly Rotaract is
all about.
