3. Introduction
• Integers use both positive and negative numbers
• Positive numbers are numbers that are above
zero. (e.g. 7 or 20)
• Negative numbers are numbers that are below
zero. (e.g. -6 or -28)
4. The Number Line
• The number line is a very useful tool to help you
figure out the answers of integer problems. Think
of it as a tool.
6. Rules
• When you add, subtract, multiply or divide
negatives you have to remember these
rules or else you’ll answer the question
incorrectly!
7. Operation Rules
• Use the number line to help your understanding for these problems:
• Addition: -2 + 1= ? 5 + -3= ? Tricky one coming up: -6 + -2 = ?
• Subtraction: 1-6=? -1-2=? tricky one: 1--1=?
9. Wacky Facts And Opinions
• Fact: A negative number plus it’s positive is zero: 1+-1= 0 or -1+1= 0.
• Opinion (Atom 7): Multiplication and division with integers is easier
than addition and subtraction with integers.
• Fact: Every positive integer has a corresponding negative integer. (e.g.
-3 and 3).
• Opinion (Atom 20): Multiplying integers are really easy. Subtracting
integers are the hardest.
• Fact: Subtracting a negative integer is the same as adding a positive
integer.
• Fact: Zero is not an integer.
