Another secret is my husband, who somehow knows what
the next big thing will be—about six months before it
breaks. So I listen to him. As for inspiration, I make sure to
take vacations (to give my batteries a serious recharge)
and I try to not work on the weekends unless absolutely
necessary. Daily, I make sure to get plenty of sleep; my
brain figures out things overnight, which is kind of weird. I
have some of my best ideas right when I wake up in the
morning, and when I'm driving to work.

into their responsibilities. I think it is important to at least

that you are able to talk about it.
You need not become an expert with it, just familiar
enough with it to know what it can and cannot do.
We spend so much time learning new technology, there is
little time left over for the creative and inspiration side of
the brain. We need to be able to balance the two needs.

At Newsweek, I brought someone in to show us a 3D
drawing program, which was like priming our

engines just to get us started and to destroy the
software's mystique.

In these tough times, it's nearly impossible to schedule a
shift to try working in a different medium. Since I'm mainly

a print designer, I try to shoot video in my spare time, or
make a Flash animation on the side to go with a
centerpiece someone else has done.
Regardless of whether it runs, the process
of making it is a learning experience in itself.
I also try to find someone in the newsroom (or outside)

There are many places to find the code and then play with

myself analyzing how commercials are shot.
So many of them tell stories now in a very
short time-frame, and they use techniques
that I would love to steal.
I just need to get more adept at Final Cut to
use some of it!
