WAX ASH TRY by Santosh Kumar Jha
1. 1
Preliminary
Smoking tobacco is widely considered as a part of food
behavior. But because of tobacco’s negative effects over
direct and indirect smokers are well studied during last
couple of years. Unlike other parts of the world, India is
also one of the largest producer and consumer of these
products.
Primary Smokers: chronicle smoking is a result of
psychological phenomenon of an individual- where they
feel the factor of RELAX. Initially smoking helps to
develop ‘Concentric Thinking’ to the smoker.
Progressively in latter phases it becomes a tool for
psychological ‘Time-Filling’ and then lead the smoker
into a ‘world of relax’. But in latter phase this leads the
smoker into ‘Depressive Thinking’.
Secondary smokers: Secondary or Passive smoking is
usually seen around the close habitat territories where
the Primary Smoker lives in. In this category family
members, friends, colleagues etc of a primary smoker
might in-circle.
Contents a smoker inhales with every individual puff of
smoke: Tar + Carbon Monoxide + Hydrogen Cyanide +
Free Radicals + Metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead) +
Radioactive Compounds etc.

Effects
Before Smoke After Smoke
According to my studies from Batter Health Channel,
smoking effects badly our Respiratory System,
Circulatory System, Immune System, Musculoskeletal
System along with other issues like- reduce ability to
smell & taste, premature wrinkling of skin, blindness
etc. The most dangerous segments associated with
smoking are:
(1.) Male Smokers: Lower sperm count, Higher
percentage of deformed sperm, Genetic damage to
sperm, Impotence, which may be due to the effects of
smoking on blood flow and damage to the blood vessels
of the penis.
(2.) Female Smokers: Reduced fertility, Menstrual cycle
irregularities or absence of menstruation, Menopause
reached one or two years earlier, Increased risk of
cancer of the cervix, Greatly increased risk of stroke and
heart attack if the smoker is aged over 35 years and
taking the oral contraceptive pill
(3.) Smoker’s Unborn Baby: Increased risk of
miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, Low birth
weight, which may have a lasting effect of the growth
and development of children. Low birth weight is
associated with an increased risk for heart disease,
stroke, high blood pressure, being overweight and
diabetes in adulthood, Increased risk of cleft palate and

cleft lip, Paternal smoking can also harm the fetus if the
non-smoking mother is exposed to second-hand smoke.
(4.) Chronicle or Life Time Smokers: Cancer of the lung,
mouth, nose, voice box, tongue, nasal sinus, esophagus,
throat, pancreas, bone marrow (myeloid leukaemia),
kidney, cervix, ovary, ureter, liver, bladder, bowel and
stomach, Lung diseases such as chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, which includes chronic bronchitis
and emphysema, Coronary artery disease, heart
disease, heart attack, Ulcers in digestive system,
Osteoporosis, Poor blood circulation in feet and hands
etc.

How Does It
Works?
I explained this process
through a comic
representation. There
are two characters in
this comic conversation,
named Mr. Chimni and
Ms. Chokha. Mr. Chimni
is representing the
community of active
chronic smokers and
Ms. Chokha is
representing the
community of Passive
smokers. Ms. Chokha
loves Mr. Chimni but at
same time hates his
smoking.
As Ms. Chokha is careful
about Mr. Chimni so she
explored several ways
to make Mr. Chimni
aware of the hazards of
smoking. After lots of
failure finally she reach
to a shop and purchased
a “Wax Ash Tray” and
offered Mr. Chimni as a
‘Gift of Love’!
It worked! Mr. Chimni
finally quit smoking!!

Form
Materials
Texture
Color
FORM: As smoking effects our heart so I focused over
heart form. But as the real heart form is socially not so
appealing that’s why I shifted to ‘Literative Heart Form’:
MATERIALS: As I want to make a pallet of melting which
may demonstrate the symbolic statement- “Look…What
Is Going Inside Your Heart!” So selected Wax as primary
material- as it melts at temperature of ash. To avoid the
issue of spoiling wooden table-tops I used terracotta- as
it’s is respectively less priced material and available in
abundance for outer cover of ash tray. I used a thin &
soft fabric sheet over terracotta bottom to protect table
top from scratches. I also used a thick paper strip- metal
sheet covered on top as cigarette platform.
TEXTURE: I used the texture of blood droplets over the
surface of wax coated inner bottom part of the ash tray.
This helps to recall the fact- “We Need Fresh Blood
Within Our Heart to Live Healthy”!
COLOR: I used Crimson Red to provide a feel of Pure
Blood. During melting on heat it converts into grey and
black rustic color sheds. It gives the feel of death!!
