3. The Current Situation
Singapore’s recycling effort is severely
lacking in our neighbourhoods. There
is little effort put into encouraging
people to recycle their waste materials!
4. Our Considerations
We went through the Basic Pattern of Thinking for InquiryBasic Pattern of Thinking for Inquiry with our
Facilitators
Initial Problematic Situation – ‘Seeing’ the task
closely
Initiating Ideas from the task – ‘Asking’ the issues
raised
Brainstorming for Ideas – ‘Thinking’ about
alternatives
Reasoning & Exploring – ‘Talking’ to different
people to find out more
Evaluating – ‘Making’ our decision
5. Our Alternatives
1. Start a ‘Give and Take’ storybooks
campaign - exchanging old storybooks
which are still in good condition.
2. Promote a school recycling/
environmentally conscious culture –
only use recycled paper/materials.
6. 3. Collect old material (clothes, books)
and give them to the lower-income
families in Pasir Ris Primary School.
7. Our Solution
In order to solve the problem, we have
decided to promote environmental awareness
in our school
Hence, we are going to organise the
8. Our Reasons
According to the School Librarian, there
are many old and unwanted books that are
still in good condition
We want to continue our recycling efforts
in the school in raising our schoolmates’
awareness in the environment
We also want to encourage our
schoolmates to read more widely.
9. What Our Project is all about…
This campaign is all about exchangingexchanging
books with your friends
Simply bring a book from home and
exchange it with another book with
your friends
Or you can simply put your books in
the shelves near the Speakers’ Corner
for others to exchange
10. We ideate…
1. The books must be in good condition (eg
The pages must not be torn or dirty) in
order to qualify for the Give & Take
Campaign
2. Any book not qualified will be given away
3. The borrowed library books cannot be
exchanged
11. We did this…
• Worked with Mrs Caroline Silva, Library Coordinator
• Put up signage and arrange books for exchange
• Advertise in Ezi-Announcer
13. Positive Outcomes
1. Through this effort, we are sure that we have
helped the Earth by:
reducing the number of trees cut down to
print books
reusing old books instead of throwing them
away
saving money
saving electricity needed for the printers to
print the books
14. 2. We have also helped encourage our
schoolmates to read more books. Reading
widely is definitely a plus
3. Also, this campaign has allowed pupils to get
a chance to exchange books with their
friends; without even spending a cent to read
more books
15. The next lap....
We hope to continue this project by
dedicating a day for every Pasirian to
exchange books with one another

Initial Problematic Situation – ‘Seeing’ the task closely
We read and discuss the task so as to fully understand the required task and to make the appropriate decisions and plans.
Initiating Ideas from the task – ‘Asking’ the issues raised
- We ask questions like, What issues does this article raise? What does it article make us think about? What does this article make us wonder about?
Suggesting – ‘Thinking’ about alternatives
We then brainstorm for ideas
Reasoning & Exploring – ‘Talking’ to different people
- We spoke to the school Librarian, our schoolmates, our teachers and even our parents
Evaluating – ‘Making’ our decision
-
Reasons for doing so are:
According to the School Librarian, there are many old and unwanted books that are still in good conditions.
We want to continue our recycling efforts in the school in raising our schoolmates’ awareness in the environment
We also want to encourage our schoolmates to read more widely.
