2. Personal Statement Life can be a very difficult gift if we are always consumed and fearful of it. Growing up, I was a very shy and fearful individual. As I grew older I began to realize that it is not so important what others think of you, but what you think of yourself. Confidence and humbleness are attributes I have
3. Personal Statement (cont). gained over the years. Speaking what is on your mind when others will not is a very important skill to acquire. The things I have gone through up to this date have taught me so much, not only about life, but also about myself. Growing up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan I found myself amongst a great group of friends and family. An old soul trapped in a young mans body
4. (cont). often left me feeling empty and unsatisfied. I needed something more in my life. My first year of college took place on the western side of Michigan, in Kalamazoo. I left home for the first time on a journey of education. Being a shy and somewhat afraid person, I came to realize that Kalamazoo was not a town for me. I moved back home after the first year to attend Oakland
5. (cont). University in Rochester, Michigan. I enjoyed Oakland’s curriculum and found good education there, but felt as though I was living back in high school once again. Realizing this after two years at Oakland I knew I had to make a change in my life. On a quest to leave my shyness and timid behavior behind, I moved to Los Angeles, California to attend The American School of Professional Psychology: Argosy
6. (cont). University. Moving to a big city, where you know nobody, thousands of miles away from home was definitely a shock. Growing up and living at home, I never had to work a day in my life. When I found myself in one of the biggest cities in the U.S. I really had a lot on my plate. I have worked many, many jobs out here since my move back in August 2009. Getting neck deep in various jobs
7. (cont). has truly shown me what it means to work hard at something and persevere even when things seem too hard to move forward. After about fifteen different jobs, I landed, by fate (I believe) at a charter school in downtown L.A., called Camino Nuevo. I work for a non-profit organization that
8. (cont). runs the after school enrichment program for these at risk youth. Going to this school on a daily basis and working with these children has inspired me greatly to ensure that I create a meaningful future for myself and family. Some of these students live in a two-bedroom apartment with six brothers and sisters and share the floor as a bed. While this is very sad, I try to be a light that shines in their life everyday that inspires them to do something great. Everyday I remind them that
9. they have many reasons to be proud of themselves and to recognize how smart they truly are. Finding ones place in life is not always an easy thing. Sometimes it is good to just buckle in and take the ride with a good attitude and humbleness until you land in the footprint God intended you to land in. Having a pure heart and a ‘do -not -quit attitude’’ will prove itself worthy in the long run. I have found myself in the most fulfilling job yet, but feel my footprint is still
10. ahead. I have a lot to offer this world and feel that this old soul still has a lot of growing to do. I know I will find my place and when I do, the world will stop and listen.
