Environmental Pollution Outline
1. Complete the following outline using Ch. 21–25 of the text. Use complete
sentences.
2. Complete the rest of the worksheet. Remember to be thorough in your answers
and write in complete sentences.
a. Water Management
1) Describe Water Management and Use
Water management is a specific area-directed method of administering,
developing and protecting a body of water by implementing certain statures and
laws therein. It employs treatment on off stream and in stream classified bodies of
water.
a) Freshwater sources
Freshwater sources are created through removing salt in the water by the
precipitation method. Bodies of water classified as freshwater sources are oceans,
streams, oceans, rivers, ponds, lakes, rain, hail, snow and the likes.
b) Water supply problems
There are various difficulties in the supply of water such as shortage of water due
to evaporation, water that are excessed and unused, flood due to too much
precipitation, scarcities observed in the planet and the run off of groundwater.
Indeed, the expense of desalination is increasing.
c) Water conservation
Water conservation is the method of protecting, carefully using and being vigilant
about both the quality and quantity of water that are being used.
d) Water use
This is mix of off and in stream usage of water with the amount of water
consumed, plus the level of water employed by the transportation sector, adds it up
to the water use in agriculture and thermoelectric industry. Also included are the
water consumed in cooling towers, these to name a few.
2) Effects of Water Use and Management Practices on the Environment
Since public are more aware than before of the effects of water use and
management practices on the environment, people as well as the authorities are
attentive to both sides. The effects now are more compromising. General issues
that are debated are flood, erection and maintenance of dams, wetlands and water
channels.
a) Short-term effects
Water levels in dams and reservoirs are fast paced changing. This results to
various disturbances in harvesting chances that have long term effects. Concerns
on the dam water hold are now questioned due to frequent excessive flooding.
Included in the problem are the over creation of mud flats and sediments that are
collected below which also affects the water hold of dams. Also in channelization
the biodiversity’s condition is at stake.
b) Long-term effects
Water distribution and management that are employed in agriculture and
urbanization usually takes up the wetlands. Human are the main culprit in the
reduction of these wetlands. The employment of fertilizers most of the time wash
off the nutrients in the soil. Moreover, erosion of the soil because of the existence
of dams and reservoirs contributes to the problem. Aside from erosion, sediment
change and hydrology are problems also created by the erection of dams. And
lastly, expansion of various water channeling of rivers and streams are fatal to
marine lives there in the body of water and causes stream flooding.
b. Three Major Types of Environmental Pollution
Air, water and indoor air are the three major types of environmental pollution.
1) Identify Type One
Water pollution is the destruction of the body of water and contamination of the
quality of water brought about by various harmful substances and chemicals.
a) Causes
Urban and agricultural harmful by-products, accidental spills and leaks,
substances such as various sediments and the likes are some of the major causes
of water pollution.
b) Treatments
Treatment of water is a method that removes the harmful substances that brought
the contamination and destruction of the body of water. These substances go to
the range of industrial and agricultural waste, human garbage and floods. Reusing
water is another treatment that is also expected to yield positive result.
c) Effects on ecosystem health
Water pollution is the root of various health problems of the ecosystem such as
thermal pollution (pollution that are brought about by various factories and
industries), sediments run-off (erosion and loss of soil resources) and acid
drainage (mines and industrial sites).
d) Effects on human health
Water pollution has also an effect on human health. Water which is also
contaminated with pathogens
