Plot Development: Understanding the Process Assignment 9 – Visuals Christina Hylton cdhylton@vt.edu November 9th, 2008 This file is designed for the instructional purpose of teaching students the process of plot diagramming. It implements the use of visual representations for enhanced learning. It is meant for use in an English classroom and should be used in aiding student comprehension.
2. Integration Activity: Instructions 9-1. Visuals often play an important role in helping an audience learn. At the same time, visuals seldom constitute all that an audience needs to learn. For this integration activity, you should identify a concept, process, or even whose learning can be enhanced through the use of visuals. After you have identified your topic, combine visuals with other instructional elements to create a presentation that will facilitate the learning expected of your audience. The presentation should be prepared in PowerPoint or an equivalent program and should contain as many slides as needed for the desired learning to occur. Also, in the Notes section of PowerPoint, identify the role that your visuals are expected to play in the learning process. The presentation of the images and elements should be consistent with the guidelines for preparing presentation graphics found on pages 74-75 in your text.

Graph is meant to give preview to process of plot development.
The character, setting, and conflict images are used to portray the meanings of each element. The plot graph is use to show students where the process of plot begins.
The picture represent protagonists or heroes.
The pictures represent antagonist or bad guys.
The role of the staircase photos is to give students representation of the building up of events. The plot diagram shows where rising action takes place and how the plot progresses.
The picture of a man jumping is to express excitement and the arrow represents turning, both of which give visual to the definition of climax. The plot diagram shows where the climax takes place in plot development.
The dominos picture gives a visual representation of falling action with a downward wave of falling dominos. Like before, the role of the plot diagram is to provide students with a visual as to when falling action takes place during the process of developing a plot.
The image of a man walking away and footsteps is meant to show the conclusion of something. The figure breaking the ribbon (and the image of “The End”) represents the finale or ending. The purpose of the plot diagram is to give students a visual in when the denouement takes place in plot development.
The arrows are meant to guide the reader from one point of information to the other.
