[Review of NX100 + 20-50mm lens] Performance of the NX100

Samsung NX100 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera
In the previous review, I looked at the appearance and design of the NX100. It was quite interesting that
some people had a good impression, while others had a bad impression by their preference. This review
is going to handle the new technology i-Function and other functional features of the NX100. All the
pictures used for this review were only resized without any retouching, so please take a look. Let’s take a

look at the i-Function first.

C. Pushing the iFn button, a menu is displayed on the lower side of the screen.

By using the iFn button on the lens, setting the camera quickly.
Pushing the i-Fn button on the left side of the lens, like the above picture, a setting menu is displayed on



the lower side of the screen. Various functions such as aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation,
and ISO can be set, and pushing the button again, the setting menu is changed. For example, if you want
to change the white balance after setting the aperture, push the i-Fn button twice. The mode changes
aperture, exposure, white balance, ISO, and aperture again when pushing the button. The setting value
can be adjusted by rotating the focus ring or smart dial. To be honest, I had used it a lot at first, because
it was quite interesting to use it, but after a month, I didn’t use it much. Due to the light weight, I
actually took pictures only with my right hand, so I don’t hold the lens with my left hand any more. If it
was applied to a heavy DSLR camera, it would be more useful, I think. I took the movie using i-Function.
Please take a look at the screen and way to use it.

Noise by ISO and good color expression
Because recent cameras have great performance, it’s really difficult to evaluate the performance. I
uploaded 100% cropped images. The aperture was 11 which I used often recently. The lens focus was
50mm. The color feel was just normal. If you didn’t care about the light source, pictures tended to go
dark. It might be due to my poor skill, but I needed to care about the light source wherever I was.



ISO up to 6400
I cropped 100% the dark are of the picture, and from ISO 400, noise started to come out. Up to ISO
3200, the alphabet on the cap could be recognized. In ISO 6400, it was not possible to recognize. Since I
don’t like noise, I use up to ISO 400. That means if the area is a little dark, the pictures easily go blur. The
built-in flash should have been included.

Okay up to ISO 400
The images were resized to 1,200 pixels horizontal and 100% cropped. From ISO 800, noise started to be
distinguishable. In ISO 400, there was some noise in dark areas. If you take a shot for a web site, in up to
ISO 400, you can get a clear quality shot.

10 kinds of White balance mode
It supports basic white balance modes such as daylight, cloudy, and fluorescent light and also includes
manual white balance such as custom and color temperature. I used the color temperature a lot. It was
easy to set and I liked that I could directly adjust the red and blue. I summarized the color feel of the
basic white balance modes. Please see how the original color changes.

It’s the sunstars. After tightening the aperture to F22, the shape on the picture came out. I summarized
the sunstars by aperture.



Bright source of light makes a white hole
While taking a shot with the 20-50mm bundle lens, a circular white hole was made in the area of the
light source. In a daylight picture, the detail in the bright area tended to go white. In order to solve the
harmed detail in a bright area, Smart Range is supported.



Smart Range – ISO 100 is not supported.
Pushing the Fn button on the right side, Smart Range option can be checked. Setting it to on, it’s
activated, but not available with ISO 100. It’s supported from ISO 200. ISO 100 is not activated. Please
check the function of the Smart Range with the below picture.



It recovers the detail in a bright area
The above picture was the comparison between Smart Range on and off. If it was off, the bright area
totally went white, but if it was on, it kept the detail enough to distinguish the line of teeth. However,
there was some difference in color feel.



A little blue and dark screen
Shooting with the Smart Range, the color went a little blur and dark. That’s why I normally turned this
function off.



Sound Picture recording the sound of field.
The NX100 supports Sound Picture. When shooting, a field noise is recorded together for a certain time
5~10 sec. Before using this function, I thought the sound was included in the image, but it was not. And
RAW file can’t be used for Sound Picture, but only JPG. Setting the mode dial to SCENE, and select the
sound picture to use it.



Sound is saved as a WAV file.
I took a shot with the sound picture at Han River. Like you see in the picture, the sound was saved as a
WAV file with the same file name as the image file. I felt like I actually was in the field when I heard the
sound together. I hope the next camera will support RAW file.

Various information filling the sides and lower side
Main information such as shutter speed, aperture, and exposure is displayed in the lower side of the
screen. The lower side menu tap is fixed. Therefore, only the above screen is for the picture. Other
information is displayed on both the right and left sides. If you see the histogram a lot, like the above
picture, you can see it on the right lower side. Information except the lower tap can be hid by using the
DISP button on the left top of the screen.



Metering
By pushing the Fn button, you can set the metering in the center of the menu tap. 3 modes such as spot,
center, and multi are supported. Please see the samples to see how they are taken by the light.



High speed shooting mode taking 30 shots per sec
It supports the high speed shooting mode which takes 30 shots per sec. Only JPG file can be saved. If the
image is set to RAW, the high speed shooting mode is deactivated. It needs to be changed to JPG. The
number of shots can be set to 10, 15, and 30. As soon as pushing the shutter, it starts shooting right
away. The below picture is the rollercoaster taken with the high speed shooting mode.



Picture Wizard
Users can make their own picture by adjusting color, saturation, sharpness, and contrast. It’s good to have
your own custom style, I think.



My impression to the 20-50mm bundle lens
Due to the lens characteristic or image processing, I think the objects are taken sharply. I don’t exactly
know it’s because of its high sharpness or image processor. It took the detailed images. The more
tightening the aperture, the more angulated the Bokeh, so I recommend shooting in the maximum
opening.

Movie recording – HD 720p + Mono voice
In order to record a movie, you can select the movie mode in the mode dial. There was no recording
button, so you can just push the shutter. Pushing the shutter button once again, it stops the shooting. It
automatically sets the focus, so do not push the shutter to set the focus while recording. It supports
30fps and 720p HD movie recording with mono sound for up to 25 minutes.

No smearing effect in a backlight situation



I recorded a movie in a backlight situation. I moved the lens toward the sun, but there was no smear like
the picture. I think it was because of the CMOS image sensor. There was no blue light effect or
something like the picture. Please see the movie taken by the NX100.

Auto focus function by the depth preview button
While recording a movie, we need to take a moving object a lot. The focus should follow the object
continuously, so users need to push the depth preview button on the left side of the LCD for the
automatic focus setting. Pushing it once, it automatically sets the focus. However, the sound of focusing
was a little loud. That means the sound is also recorded in the movie. Please see the below movie.
Pushing the depth preview button, the automatic focus setting started. Try to hear the sound of focusing.

Shooting with Manual focusing in AF mode
If you want to record a bokeh movie, set the manual focus and shoot when you see the bokeh. Because
there is no smearing effect, you can record a clear bokeh movie. I recorded it.

Mirrorless camera with good quality, Samsung NX100
We have looked at the performance of the NX100. Compared to competitors’ models, the movie
recording function is not that good, but the great lens and neat image shooting are attractive. It could
take 400~410 shots with one battery. I think it’s the effect of the low power consumption AMOLED. Let
